Ch 149: A Simple Favor
The Central State soldier’s voice trembled slightly, clearly startled by the sudden attack.
“Woo—”
From the distance, the sharp and prolonged sound of the Central Plains Defense Line’s air defense alarm immediately followed.
After hearing the alarm sound, the Central State officer hastily poked his head out of the jeep. His face was full of surprise as he watched the flames exploding in the sky gradually dissipate. He couldn’t help but secretly ponder:
‘Thank goodness I ran fast.’
‘The Central Plains Defense Line is equipped with anti-aircraft guns. Even if the war had started, the Eternal Fire Alliance wouldn’t have shot this inaccurately.’
‘Could it have just been a test of the air defense range?’
But it was getting increasingly dangerous outside the defense line. He should hurry and complete the procedure, go back and have his father promote him to regimental commander; that would be much safer.
Thinking this, the officer quickly turned his head and urged the driver in the driver’s seat:
“Faster! Quickly leave this dangerous area and return to the defense line.”
“Yes, officer.” The driver dared not show the slightest negligence and pressed the accelerator again.
The officer looked down at the information in the booklet; the return route passed through Zone B33.
This area only had one team. As long as he registered this team, he could go back and report; then he wouldn’t have to come out again to return to the defense line.
“Let’s stop by Zone B33.”
“Yes.”
The jeep quickly drove away from the area near Li Yu, heading towards another area.
Not long after, the jeep arrived at Zone B33.
As the officer looked up, he saw a large crowd of people migrating from afar.
He immediately became certain that the last team was undoubtedly this one.
As they got closer, the officer was surprised to find that ahead were densely packed figures.
The number of people in this team exceeded his imagination; there were even two extremely disgusting-looking exotic beasts in the team.
Strangely, there was only this one team in the entire B33 zone; not even a single vagrant was nearby.
The officer simply assumed that this team had dispersed the vagrants they encountered along the way, resulting in this area being so empty. He didn’t pay any attention to it.
After all, even ghosts exist in Zhongzhou; anything strange could happen.
The jeep, as before, stopped directly in front of the crowd.
A soldier got out first and respectfully opened the door.
The officer shook his head, his arm clutching the booklet, and got out of the car haughtily.
He first glanced at the two large and deformed exotic beasts in the crowd.
The skin of these two exotic beasts was rotten, with white bone clearly visible; they should have been dead long ago, yet they were still able to stand and walk.
‘It seems there’s an Awakener who can control exotic beasts here.’ The officer thought to himself.
Then, he casually scanned the crowd in front of him.
They all had vacant stares, their eyes red and lifeless, as if eroded by some terrible infectious disease, devoid of vitality.
Moreover, everyone walked with a limp, which looked very strange.
Seeing this, the officer was startled. He quickly took out a mask from his pocket and put it on, subconsciously taking a step back to slightly increase the distance between himself and the crowd.
At this moment, he just wanted to finish quickly and get away from these people.
So he hurriedly spoke, quickly stating the procedure according to the rules:
“According to the relevant rules, teams with a large number of people need to be registered in advance.”
In the center of the crowd, a little girl lying on the back of an exotic beast curiously sat up. She seemed to have heard someone speaking in front of the team.
Her red eyes stared straight ahead, her face full of doubt, clearly not understanding why someone was blocking her path.
The officer’s gaze swept past her, completely ignoring the little girl.
Instead, he pointed to the man over two meters tall and exceptionally strong in front, shouting loudly:
“Hey! You must be their Leader, come over here for registration.”
The strongman’s face showed a look of bewilderment; he clearly hadn’t figured out what was going on.
Seeing this, the officer nodded again affirmatively and said: “That’s right, it’s you! Don’t dawdle, please cooperate with our work.”
The strongman walked over with heavy, staggering steps. His right hand tightly gripped a huge axe, the blade stained with dried dark red blood.
His massive body was like a moving hill; although his muscles had lost their former vitality, they were still as firm as a stone slab.
However, on his left arm, a piece of peeled flesh was exposed, looking particularly hideous. With every step the strongman took, the loose chunks of meat on his body trembled, as if they might fall off at any moment.
The officer also noticed that a large piece of flesh was missing from the strongman’s shoulder. He couldn’t help but grimace; that looked very painful.
Clearly, these people had just been through an extremely fierce battle.
Looking at the others, their conditions were similar to the strongman’s; they all had more or less injuries, and some even had clearly visible bullet holes.
But his job was only to register them in advance. The battles these teams had fought along the way and whether they could successfully reach the defense line were not his concerns.
Outside the Zhongzhou Defense Line, they would not interfere in the mutual slaughter between different teams and crowds.
“With your condition, you’re just a vagrant team at best.” The officer didn’t even bother to ask; he unhesitatingly defined their identity.
He wrote the number 33 in the next blank space on the booklet.
After writing, the officer looked up, expressionless, at the burly strongman in front of him, then asked in an impatient tone:
“What’s your name?”
After asking, he waited with his pen for an answer. After a long while, he heard nothing.
He frowned and looked up, but saw the strongman standing there dumbfounded, and the crowd behind him stood motionless as well.
They all stared at him with blood-red eyes, like a group of fools.
The officer looked at the strongman in front of him doubtfully: “Aren’t you the Leader? Then what is the name of your team’s Leader?”
Still no one answered; there was a deathly silence.
“Don’t you understand? I’m asking who your team’s Leader is?”
The scene remained silent, as if time had frozen.
“Incredible, you don’t even know who your Boss is?”
The officer was completely impatient. He hated encountering vagrants who couldn’t speak properly; these people probably hadn’t even heard of Zhongzhou, making communication too difficult.
If it weren’t for someone above actually investigating, he would have filled out the booklet before he even left.
Thinking this, he stopped asking and scribbled on the booklet:
‘Red Eyes, Team 33, Vagrant Team’
