Chapter 148: Never Expected This Move
These are the old-fashioned green trains. Not only do they run slowly, but the seats are also very hard, and the smell is strong.
Luckily, Gu Yue bought all sleeper tickets, and the group found their carriage number and went in.
There were exactly six people in Song Chu’s group, fitting perfectly into one compartment.
The two female comrades took the lower berths, and the four male comrades took the middle and upper berths.
Except for Gu Yue, none of the others had ever been on a sleeper train.
Song Chu hadn’t either. In the past, she traveled by car, plane, or high-speed rail. This was her first time on such a train.
“When will we arrive?” She asked Gu Yue.
Gu Yue replied, “We won’t arrive until two days later.”
“Luckily you bought sleeper tickets. Otherwise, sitting for two days would be too torturous,” Song Chu said with a smile.
Gu Yue said, “I was worried you wouldn’t want to sit for so long, so I specifically asked someone to help me buy sleeper tickets.”
He knew Song Chu quite well, knowing that she could endure hardship, but when she could enjoy herself, she didn’t like to make herself uncomfortable.
Song Chu chuckled, “Gu, the Academic God, understands me best.”
She found that although Gu Yue was a bit cold, he was quite meticulous and considerate in many ways.
The train started moving. The group sat and chatted first. For lunch and dinner, they ate eggs and meat pies.
The breeding farm had recently replaced a batch of water bottles. This time, Song Chu asked everyone to bring one, filling them at the hotel and bringing them onto the train.
This solved the problem of food and drinks.
Because of the hot weather, the eggs could last for two days, but the meat pies couldn’t. Yesterday, she had asked everyone to divide them up and finish them.
The next day, she asked Gu Yue to take them to the dining car for lunch.
There weren’t many people in the dining car, mainly because the food was more expensive than in state-run restaurants outside. Everyone was poor now, so most people brought their own food on the train or endured until they got off to buy something to eat.
Song Chu asked them to sit down while she went to order.
There were only three dishes available, one meat and two vegetarian. The soup was free rice soup. Both food tickets and money were required.
Song Chu didn’t hold back. She ordered one serving of the three dishes for each person, causing the other people sitting in the dining car to glance at them.
These people were really willing to spend on food.
After experiencing the ten-yuan hotel and the lavish meals at the state-run restaurant, Tang Youhua and the others were much calmer now.
Song Chu found the food to be quite tasty. The portions of food in this era were still quite generous.
Just as they finished eating, an old lady not far away suddenly started coughing violently. Then, she suddenly clutched her throat with both hands, looking like she was about to suffocate.
The young woman opposite her panicked, “Grandma, what’s wrong?”
The old lady couldn’t speak at all. Her eyes widened, and she pointed at her throat.
The people in the dining car were also startled, “Is something stuck in her throat?”
The old lady nodded tremblingly, and her face started to turn blue. It looked very dangerous.
Seeing this, Song Chu immediately went over and found that she was indeed suffocating from something stuck in her throat.
Without hesitation, she picked up the old lady and started performing the modern first aid method for choking.
She was already very strong, and her method was quite correct. After a few attempts, the old lady vomited, spitting out a small chicken bone.
Then she started coughing. Song Chu asked the dining car staff to pour a glass of water for the old lady to drink.
After drinking the water, the old lady slowly stopped coughing. Then, she slumped back into her chair, completely exhausted.
Song Chu originally wanted to leave, but the old lady held her hand tightly and wouldn’t let go.
After resting for two minutes, the old lady finally had the strength to speak. She held Song Chu’s hand and said gratefully, “Young lady, thank you so much. Otherwise, I might have lost my life here.”
◈◈◈
She had originally wanted to cough up the chicken bone, but when she tried to cough, it accidentally slipped down further, and then she couldn’t breathe at all. She felt like she was about to die.
Having just escaped from death’s door, she was naturally very grateful to the person who saved her.
Song Chu smiled, “Aunt, you’re welcome. You’re just lucky.”
Many elderly people in this era were a bit superstitious. Hearing her say this made her very happy, “Little girl, you’re not only beautiful, but you also have a sweet tongue.”
“No matter what, you saved me. I’ll remember this kindness,” the old lady held her hand tightly, feeling a sense of security, “What’s your name?”
“My name is Song Chu,” Song Chu said with a smile, “Aunt, you’re welcome. It was just a small matter.”
“You should go back to your compartment and rest. We should go back too,” she added.
Seeing her do-gooder attitude without expecting anything in return, the old lady liked her even more. This was a good comrade.
But the feeling of almost being choked to death was still fresh in her mind. She felt she had to repay her kindness.
Especially since she took a liking to Song Chu at first sight. Beautiful, sweet-tongued, and with high ideological awareness.
“Which carriage are you in?” she asked.
Song Chu didn’t hide it, “Number seven.”
The old lady’s eyes lit up, “We’re also in carriage number seven. Let’s go back together.”
She stood up, still holding Song Chu’s hand, acting very affectionately, “Xiao Song, you can call me Aunt Pang.”
Song Chu felt that the old lady was kind and loving, and she liked her too, “Aunt Pang.”
At this moment, the young woman who had been scared out of her wits finally came to her senses. She looked at Song Chu gratefully, her eyes red, and said, “Comrade Song, thank you so much today.”
She had been really scared just now, almost thinking her grandmother was going to die. She didn’t know what she would have done.
Song Chu could see that she was frightened and smiled to comfort her, “You’re welcome. Don’t worry, your grandmother is fine now.”
The woman nodded, “Yes, thank you.”
Except for Gu Yue, Tang Youhua and the others were stunned by Song Chu’s move.
Tang Wei looked at Song Chu, who was walking in front with the grandmother and granddaughter, and couldn’t help but ask, “Is there anything Chu Chu can’t do?”
She even knew how to save people. She’s amazing.
Song Lao Si also didn’t expect his sister to have this skill. He reacted and proudly puffed out his chest, “Look who’s sister she is. My sister knows a lot of things.”
Tang Youhua rolled his eyes at him, “Come on, Chu Chu is my sister too. It’s Chu Chu’s own ability, it has nothing to do with whose sister she is.”
“That’s right,” Tang Wei nodded in strong support. Song Lao Si just liked to take credit. Song Chu was the lucky star of the whole village.
Song Lao Si choked, “Hmph.”
Song Ping’s admiration for Song Chu deepened, “Chu Chu is really capable.”
Gu Yue smiled, “Indeed.”
He remembered a saying of Song Xiaochu’s, “Opportunities are for those who are prepared.”
Today, Song Chu’s ability to save the old lady wasn’t just a lucky coincidence. Her rescue technique was unique and looked quite professional, indicating that she had learned it before.
They soon arrived at carriage number seven.
As fate would have it, the old lady’s compartment was right next to Song Chu’s.
She couldn’t help but smile and pull Song Chu inside, offering them many of the snacks she had brought.
