Chapter 159: Just Want to Say Thank You
Song Chu listened to him while taking out the injection from her bag.
“This is an injection for reducing fever and inflammation. His fever is a bit serious. If he doesn’t get an injection, I’m afraid it will turn into pneumonia, which would be troublesome.”
Xue Yue first opened the wooden box and looked at the pills inside, his eyes revealing a bit of surprise.
He then took the injection she took out and looked at it, “It is indeed an injection for reducing fever and inflammation.”
Song Chu asked, “Are you a doctor?”
Xue Yue nodded, “Before being sent down, I was a doctor.”
Song Chu immediately said, “Then can you give injections? If so, please give this injection.”
Xue Yue was originally a Western medicine doctor and had clinical practice during his university years. Naturally, he knew how to give injections and infusions. He smiled and said, “Alright, I’ll do it.”
It would indeed be a bit awkward to ask a young girl to pull down the pants of an unfamiliar man to give an injection.
He quickly drew the medicine into the syringe and then gave Gu Yan the injection.
While he was giving the injection, Song Chu started talking to Gu Yue’s Father and told him her name.
“Comrade Xiao Song, were these pills made by Old Lu?” Xue Yue asked Song Chu after finishing the injection.
This time it was Song Chu’s turn to be surprised, “You know Old Lu? These pills were indeed made by him.”
“Haha, not only do I know him, but we are also old friends. I’ve even taken the pills he made before, that’s why I recognized them at a glance.” Xue Yue also let down his guard against Song Chu because of the pills.
“I see, then it’s really fate.”
After Song Chu finished speaking, she raised her hand to look at her watch, “I’ll go first. The villagers will be off work soon. It would be troublesome if someone saw me. I’ll come back with Gu Yue tonight.”
Gu Yucheng also missed his younger son very much, “Alright, be careful on your way back. Come back after dark.”
“Okay!” Song Chu put on her mask and quickly left the farm.
She still avoided the villagers, got into the car quickly, and then changed back into her previous dress.
She had been avoiding people all along, and even if someone did happen to see her from afar, they wouldn’t be able to recognize her.
Song Ping was also relieved to see her return safely, “Chu Chu, you should rest for a while too.”
“Okay.” After a bumpy day of traveling, Song Chu was also a little tired. She leaned against the back of the seat and took a nap.
About an hour later, Gu Yue and the others returned to the car.
“Have you finished eating?” Song Chu opened her eyes and asked.
Xu Ting smiled and replied, “We’ve finished eating. The Brigade Leader asked me to come and call you. He will take us to the place where we will be staying.”
“If you’re hungry, you can take some food to the people’s house where you’re staying and ask them to cook something for you.” They had brought their own food in the car.
“Alright!” Song Chu nodded. They picked up their backpacks and the things they brought, and went back to the Brigade Leader’s house together.
Song Chu got out of the car and walked to Gu Yue’s side, whispering, “It’s all taken care of. Don’t worry.”
Gu Yue breathed a sigh of relief and felt warmth in his heart, “Thank you, Song Xiaochu.”
“Why are you suddenly being so polite?” Song Chu asked with a smile.
“I don’t know why, I just want to say thank you.” This was Gu Yue’s true thought.
Song Chu raised her eyebrows, “Less talk, more action.”
Gu Yue chuckled, “Yes, Director Song.”
The Brigade Leader arranged for them to stay in three different households. Song Chu and Song Ping were to stay with a widow.
The widow lived with her granddaughter, and they happened to have a spare room. Since they were all women, it was convenient for them to stay there.
Xu Ting, An Dong, Tang Youhua, and Tang Wei stayed at the Brigade Leader’s house.
Gu Yue and Song Lao Si were arranged to stay with an elderly man in the village whose two sons had both joined the army, and he lived alone.
◈◈◈
Moreover, their place was relatively close to where Song Chu and Song Ping were staying.
After the arrangements were made, Song Chu and Song Ping stayed at the widow’s house.
The widow was in her forties and looked quite energetic and capable. She was very polite to the two of them.
Song Chu took out some candy and gave it to her granddaughter, making her even more enthusiastic.
“Auntie, I’ll have to trouble you to cook something for us.” Song Chu handed her a small bag of food.
The widow initially declined but quickly accepted the food and went to the kitchen.
Song Chu asked Song Ping to go to her room and rest. She went to the kitchen and stood beside the widow, chatting with her.
After chatting about some trivial matters, Song Chu smiled and asked, “Auntie, I think your village’s Brigade Leader is quite good. How long has he been in this position?”
The widow didn’t have much guard against Song Chu, and this wasn’t a secret anyway, “He hasn’t been in this position for long. He only became the Brigade Leader last month, and it’s only temporary.”
Song Chu expressed curiosity, “The Brigade Leader can be temporary?”
The widow explained, “The previous Brigade Leader accidentally fell and hurt his waist. It’s quite serious, and he’s still recovering at home. So, the village made him the temporary Brigade Leader.”
“When the Old Brigade Leader recovers, he will have to give up his position.”
Song Chu nodded, “I see. I think the current Brigade Leader seems quite good.”
“He is indeed better than the Old Brigade Leader, but he won’t be able to stay in this position for long.” The widow clearly had some complaints about the Old Brigade Leader but didn’t voice them.
Song Chu changed the subject and mentioned what happened at the farm today, “Is the criticism of the people sent down here quite severe?”
The widow replied, “Yes, when the Old Brigade Leader was in charge, he would drag those bad elements to the village for public criticism every month. The work assigned to them was also very hard.”
“Last month, he even broke the hand of a bad element at the farm.”
Song Chu asked curiously, “Do these bad elements get work points for their labor?”
“The Old Brigade Leader didn’t give them any work points.” The widow shook her head.
“If they don’t get work points, how do they eat? Does the village distribute food to them?” Song Chu asked again.
The widow replied, “They do get some food, but not much, just enough to keep them from starving.”
“Little Sister, you city people may not have seen this before, so don’t sympathize with those bad elements. The Old Village Chief said they are not good people, that’s why they were sent to our village farm for reform.” She kindly reminded Song Chu.
She thought this city girl might be too soft-hearted.
“Okay, I was just curious.” Song Chu didn’t talk to her about the farm anymore and changed the subject again.
She also got a lot of information from the widow.
Song Chu had learned that the Old Village Chief had been brainwashing the villagers, telling them that the people sent down were very bad and should be treated as class enemies.
He also treated the people on the farm very harshly. There were originally three other elderly people sent down, but they all died from exhaustion or starvation.
The Old Brigade Leader had a lot of prestige in the village and was very domineering. He was also unfair in the allocation of work in the village, and some bad things had happened, but the widow wouldn’t say what they were.
Anyway, many villagers had some resentment towards the Old Brigade Leader, but they didn’t dare to resist at all.
When the widow finished cooking, Song Chu and Song Ping invited her and her granddaughter to eat together.
After eating, they sat and chatted for a while longer. The sky gradually darkened. The widow gave Song Chu and Song Ping an oil lamp and went to sleep with her granddaughter.
Song Chu waited until it was completely dark, said goodbye to Song Ping, and secretly went out.
