Chapter 12
“Honestly, I was a little surprised.”
“In what way?”
“I had a feeling that you wouldn’t be ordinary since Iris brought you here, but I didn’t know you’d be this exceptional. Despite her lively and easygoing personality, my older sister is still the Knight Commander of the Silver Dawn Knights. Her skills are nothing to scoff at.”
“Really?”
“Don’t try to brush it off, newbie.”
A pair of crimson eyes glared at me sharply.
“Iris said that you were afflicted by a Witch’s Curse, newbie. That means your physical abilities should be below that of an average person, but even in that situation, you fought Rize-unni to a draw. I think you should be a little more proud of yourself.”
“It’s because Rize went easy on me. It wasn’t a proper one-on-one fight.”
“Went easy on you, you say? Well, I don’t think so, and neither does my sister.”
Erika immediately refuted my words.
“And newbie, you seem to be under a huge misconception. Although she may appear to act on her own whims, she’s not so reckless as to neglect her duties. Even if she held back, it was an attack that an ordinary person would never be able to block, especially considering that she was aware that the spar was an entrance exam. Whether she went easy on you or not, a draw is a draw.”
I kept my mouth shut because it was true. Even if the goal was to reduce her HP by half, it was no different from actually fighting a boss battle.
The community was full of people who couldn’t pass the entrance exam and were wailing about it. Even if they chose a different route instead of joining the Knights, they didn’t end up in a good situation.
“It’s an unpleasant truth, but I have to agree with my sister this time. Iris, where did you even find someone like him?”
“Well, I’m not sure myself.”
“I’ll take that as you don’t want to answer.”
Erika narrowed her eyes again and walked down the hallway, wiggling her hips clad in red dolphin shorts. Whether it was the influence of the mod or not, every single step she took was incredibly alluring.
It felt like she wasn’t just walking in a way that emphasized her buttocks, but rather that she was walking to emphasize her buttocks. Considering that Rize and Iris were the same, it seemed like it was indeed the mod’s influence.
“Iris told me before that this castle originally belonged to the lord.”
I changed the subject to try and avoid focusing on her buttocks. When I started speaking, Erika stopped walking. There was a slight hint of displeasure in her eyes as she looked at me.
“…Well, yes. That’s true. This was originally the place where that bastard lived. And then he dumped it on us.”
“He also said that it would be better to experience why he abandoned this place rather than explain it in words.”
“Iris doesn’t lie. Even if she told you, you wouldn’t believe it, so it’s actually better to let you experience it yourself. We’re almost there, so be patient even if you’re curious.”
Hearing those words from Erika made me even more curious about what kind of situation it was. After finishing her sentence, Erika started walking again, swaying her hips.
The inside of the castle was incredibly clean. There wasn’t a speck of dust in the hallway, and the red carpets laid out everywhere were spotless, without even a single footprint.
I thought it was rather eerie because it was so clean overall.
A building large enough to easily accommodate hundreds of people had no sign of human presence, yet everywhere we passed was spotless, without a speck of dust.
It was impossible unless there was a cleaning fairy who did nothing but clean all day long.
“The hallway is too clean. Is this also related to that experience?”
“You guessed right. You’ll find out if you experience it from now on.”
Saying that, Erika stopped in front of a door. It was an ordinary wooden door. Identical wooden doors were lined up along the entire wall at regular intervals.
“You can use this room. I purposely chose the first room to make it easy to distinguish. Well, if you don’t like it, you can choose another room. They’re all empty anyway.”
Creak, the door opened. As soon as I saw the inside of the room, I doubted my eyes.
“…?”
Instead of a medieval-style room like the ones I saw in the game, I saw a room decorated with modern furniture that wouldn’t look out of place if you called it a studio apartment from the outside world.
The bed was made of iron and had a soft mattress, and was covered with a microfiber quilt. The pillows were also of a modern design to match.
Wallpaper was meticulously applied to the walls and ceiling, the windows were made of clear and transparent glass, and they were sliding doors with handles. There was even a small balcony behind them.
Instead of candles or light bulbs, fluorescent lights were installed on the ceiling, brightly illuminating the room. To make things even more absurd, there was even a ceiling-mounted air conditioner.
Above all, there was a desk that looked exactly like one from the outside world with a wheeled swivel chair placed in one corner of the room. There was even a fan right next to it.
I couldn’t even begin to guess what kind of mod was applied to create this scene.
As I stood there speechless, stunned by this modern-looking room, Erika turned on the air conditioner. The way she operated the remote with a familiar look suggested that it wasn’t her first time doing so.
“You can adjust the air conditioner temperature to your liking, newbie, and this is the bathroom. Is there anything you need me to explain?”
“…No, I don’t think so.”
Not only were the walls and floor of the bathroom decorated with tiles, but there was even a modern metal showerhead and a bathtub installed. The bathtub was large enough to comfortably fit two people.
I wanted to believe that the toiletries like shampoo and body wash neatly placed next to it were just a figment of my imagination.
Trying not to reveal my bewildered expression, I turned to the other side and ran my hand over the bed and the quilt. It was soft. The quality felt no different from the ones I used in the outside world.
‘Is this…real?’
What kind of crazy person made this mod? I became incredibly curious.
“Then there’s nothing much to explain. Now it’s time to tell you what you’ve been wondering about, newbie. Let’s go outside first.”
I followed Erika out of the room. After confirming that I had exited, Erika ignited a flame in her hand. The flames that erupted from her hand gradually took the shape of a sword. A wave of heat washed over me.
As the flaming sword swung, a loud crash resonated, and half of the room was engulfed in flames.
The fluorescent lights shattered, the bed caught fire, the desk and chair melted and warped. An acrid smell of burning wafted from the scorched wallpaper. The entire room was instantly incinerated and reduced to ashes.
As I stood dumbfounded by this unexpected sight, Erika calmly closed the door and then immediately opened it wide.
“…Huh?”
And in that short moment, less than a second, the room was completely restored.
“See?”
I blinked. The acrid smell of burning that I had just smelled, the blackened walls and ceiling, the burnt bed, the melted fan – everything had returned to its original state.
It felt like a lie that the room had been engulfed in flames just a moment ago. Erika chuckled at my stunned expression.
“This is why.”
“…Do you know why this is happening?”
“We don’t know either. We don’t know if it’s magic, a curse, or something else entirely.”
“Can’t you call a wizard or something to investigate?”
“They all refused. It seems certain that that lord bastard did something and dumped it on our Knights, but we can’t openly accuse him of doing something without any evidence.”
This time, she threw the wooden sword she was holding into the room and then closed and opened the door just like before.
In that brief moment, the wooden sword had vanished.
“…Where’s the wooden sword?”
“It disappeared somewhere. To be precise, it’s more accurate to say that as the room was restored, it erased the ‘objects that weren’t originally in the room’ on its own.”
“Where did it disappear to?”
“We don’t know. And we can’t know.”
I understood why they didn’t explain this verbally. A room that resets every time the door is opened and closed, who would believe it if you tried to explain it? They’d just tell you to stop lying.
‘Is the game system implemented as magic?’
I had a hunch.
In the game, unless it’s an object designed to remain in a destroyed state, the room would be clean if the player went out and came back, regardless of whether they had wreaked havoc in their quarters by swinging a sword or shattered furniture using magic.
I wondered if that characteristic of the game was somehow implemented as some unknown magic. Of course, it was just my guess, and I couldn’t know the truth.
For now, Erika wasn’t treating this as normal but rather believed that the lord had done something. If it was the mod’s influence, they should be treating this as normal, just like their attire.
Even in the story, there was no mention of the Silver Dawn Knights NPCs thinking this function was the lord’s fault.
“So, I’ll explain the precautions. You must listen carefully and memorize them. If you don’t want to lose your weapon forever, that is.”
Erika’s finger pointed at the Bloodstained Sword hanging from my waist.
“First rule: Never leave the room with any belongings inside. You just saw it, right? The moment the door closes, the things inside disappear. Once an item disappears, we don’t know where it goes, and we can’t retrieve it, so you must never do that. There’s a storage room outside for storing belongings, so use that. It’s also protected by a defensive spell, so don’t worry.”
The thought of the Bloodstained Sword disappearing was terrifying. I obediently etched it into my memory.
“Got it. What else?”
“Second rule: Wear only one piece of clothing when sleeping. Whether you wear only underwear and sleep naked, or you don’t wear underwear and sleep with clothes on. You must have only one piece of clothing touching your bare skin.”
“…Why is that?”
“Why do you think? It’s related to the first rule. First rule: Never leave the room with any belongings inside. Don’t you remember?”
“That’s about leaving, and this is about sleeping. Are the two related?”
“The exact condition for the room to reset is ‘not being visible to human sight’.”
“Not being visible to human sight?”
Erika nodded at my question.
“Even if you’re in the room, it seems to treat it as if it’s not visible if you’re asleep. More precisely, from the moment a person falls asleep. So, except for the one piece of clothing closest to your bare skin, everything disappears.”
“That’s awfully picky.”
“We think so too. That’s probably why that lord bastard dumped the castle on us. It’s probably his way of saying, ‘Screw you guys’.”
Seeing even Erika cursing the lord so consistently made me think that he must have been quite the piece of work.
Should I be relieved that he’s still a scumbag just like in the game, so I won’t feel guilty when I kill him later?
“We did an experiment, and if you sleep wearing both underwear and clothes, only the underwear remains the next day. If you sleep naked with only clothes on, the clothes are fine the next day. So that’s the established rule.”
I wondered if she wasn’t embarrassed to openly talk about sleeping naked like that, but since she didn’t seem to mind at all, I just let it slide.
“That’s all for my explanation. Do you have any more questions?”
“So, as long as I’m in the room, it won’t disappear except when I’m sleeping?”
“For now, yes. As I just mentioned, simply closing your eyes isn’t enough to trigger the restoration. It only happens when you’re asleep or unconscious.”
“Hmm… Got it.”
Erika left, saying that she would come to get me when it was almost dinner time. I unbuckled the Bloodstained Sword, leaned it against the wall, and sat down on the chair.
I couldn’t risk falling asleep and having my items vanish. I wasn’t tired for now, but it wouldn’t hurt to be cautious.
“Newbie, are you in there? I know you’re in there, so you don’t have to answer!”
“…Huh?”
Just as I sat down on the chair, I heard a knock on the door from outside. I got up again.
“Rize? Why are you here?”
“I heard you got assigned your quarters, so I came to visit! Hurry up and open the door! I’ll break it down if you don’t?”
Knowing that Rize was the type of person who would actually break down the door, I quickly got up and opened it.
Standing at the door was the blue-haired knight, wearing the same sleeveless top that barely qualified as a crop top, revealing her abdomen, and incredibly short blue dolphin shorts.
Rize grinned and waved her hand.
“Been well, newbie?”
