Chapter 16
That evening, Iris and I prepared to meet the lord. Originally, we were going to go tomorrow morning, but he sent a servant to tell us to come now.
Iris wore a white sleeveless top and dolphin shorts, as she always did, and I wore ordinary clothes made of cloth. I was really glad that the men’s clothes hadn’t changed.
“Got it? Don’t act on your own, and if he asks you anything, just keep your mouth shut and stay still. I’ll answer for you.”
“I got it. How many times have you said that?”
“I’m repeating it because it can’t be stressed enough. Remember, I don’t know how he’ll treat you or what kind of fault he’ll find with you. That means you have to stay still.”
Iris repeated her advice countless times on the way to the lord’s mansion on horseback. It wasn’t very meaningful advice.
If he really decided to find fault, that advice would be useless, and more importantly, I knew a lot more about the lord than she did.
The other Knight Commanders, including Iris, were simply tormented by his tyranny. But I was someone who had experience killing him in all sorts of ways while playing the game.
If I were to cut his throat right from the first meeting, things would get very messy, so I couldn’t do that here, but I was confident that I could get rid of him without any repercussions in two weeks, including preparation time.
“This is it.”
How long had it been since we rode into the heart of the city when Iris stopped her horse in front of a grand mansion?
It was a mansion so ridiculously large that I was speechless. I stared blankly at it for a moment, dumbfounded by its size, which was much larger than the mansion I remembered from the game.
Was the setting that he still couldn’t let go of his vanity because he was a blood relative of the imperial family? I would have believed it even if you said it was the Emperor’s residence.
‘Come to think of it, the Emperor is a woman, too, right?’
In the NPC appearance retouching mod, the Emperor was also a woman.
No, it was more accurate to say that in the appearance modification mod, almost all humanoid bosses were changed to women. In fact, it was rarer to find a boss whose gender remained male.
My head became complicated. Yes, she was probably a woman. I just hope her personality hasn’t changed too.
“Halt, halt!”
The knight standing in front of the gate to the mansion checked us and shouted nervously. It was a stark contrast to the guards at the city entrance who treated us with a certain level of courtesy.
His posture was crooked, his face was full of annoyance, and his tone was curt. He was probably acting like that because he trusted the lord, even though he wouldn’t be a match for Iris in terms of skill.
“Why are you here?”
A question popped out without even the slightest courtesy. I was dumbfounded just watching from the side, but Iris spoke in a calm tone and expression as if she was used to such treatment.
“I’ve come to report on the prison dispatch.”
“Oh, really? Then go in on your own. Leave the horses where they are.”
Now he wasn’t even gesturing with his hand, but with his chin, pointing inside and telling us to go in.
Iris gave me a look that said to be patient and got off her horse. I did the same, passed the knight, and walked in.
“Wait, who’s that next to you?”
Just when I thought we were going to pass by, he pointed his chin at me and asked curtly.
“He’s a newbie.”
“A newbie? Pfft, are you trying to get kicked out again after just one day? Do you have no learning ability?”
The knight burst out laughing, and Iris silently tied the reins to a tree. When we were far enough away from the knight that he couldn’t hear our voices as we crossed the garden, I whispered in her ear.
“Is that normal?”
Even in the game, if you talked to the knights in the mansion when the story hadn’t progressed much, you would generally get flippant and rude answers. But it wasn’t this bad.
“You have to get used to it. The longer you stay in our Knights Order without getting kicked out, the more you’ll hear such words and actions.”
Iris replied calmly. It wasn’t that she wasn’t irritated or angry, but rather that her tone was closer to resignation.
Until we entered the lord’s mansion and were told to wait in the reception room, I keenly felt how the Silver Dawn Knights had been mistreated.
I don’t know what the problem was, but it was definitely worse than in the game.
In the game, the servants looked down on the player, but they still did their job. Now, it felt like they were so busy looking down on us that they weren’t even doing the bare minimum of their job.
How long had we been waiting, almost thrown into the reception room, when suddenly women in maid outfits rushed in and set out all sorts of snacks on the empty table.
“The lord is entering.”
Of course, it wasn’t for us, but for the lord who was about to enter. He was going to eat again after neglecting us and leaving us to eat dinner?
When I heard someone coming in, I finally thought I’d get to see his face, so I raised my head.
‘……Wow, holy s*it.’
And I was horrified by a visual that was far more atrocious than I had imagined.
Not only was his entire body covered in blubber, but the fat had spread to his face, burying his features, and his entire body was so obese that I wondered how he could even walk.
It was the first time I had ever seen a human whose vertical and horizontal lengths looked almost the same.
I wanted to applaud the fact that he had walked in on his own two feet instead of rolling on the floor. His knee joints were still intact despite walking around like that?
‘He was fat in the game too, but not that bad.’
The lord waddled in and plopped down on the sofa with a long exhale. The seat sank under his weight. The first thing he did after sitting down was to eat the snacks on the table.
After a long while of munching sounds, the lord finally opened his mouth after a long burp.
“So, you’re back, Iris.”
“……Yes, as you commanded, I investigated the prison.”
Perhaps because he was a blood relative of the imperial family despite his appearance, Iris used the highest honorifics for the lord. However, her face, which was usually calm when using honorifics, was unusually distorted.
“Report.”
“Including the prisoners and guards, all the humans in the prison, except for one, were killed by monsters. By the time I got there, it was already too late to do anything.”
“Tsk, I told you to be well prepared. I don’t know why you didn’t listen to me.”
Well, you lured that monster, didn’t you?
Knowing the whole story, I scoffed inwardly. He had sent someone to lure the Human Butcher to the prison, and now he was acting like he had foresight? It was the most ridiculous thing I had ever heard.
“Is that guy next to you the only survivor of the prison?”
Perhaps because he had some experience playing politics in the Imperial Palace, he glanced at me and immediately recognized my identity. Iris nodded.
“That’s right.”
The lord seemed to be thinking about something for a moment, then grabbed a handful of snacks from the table and munched on them before looking at Iris and gesturing for her to leave. Iris was greatly flustered.
“You may leave, Iris.”
“Excuse me? Butㅡ”
“I said leave. Are you going to disobey my orders?”
“…….”
Iris looked at me with anxious eyes, but there was nothing she could do. She bit her lip once, bowed her head haphazardly, and went out, closing the door behind her.
It was unexpected to be in this situation from the first meeting.
Well, it didn’t really matter to me. It was an event that I had to go through at least once if I wanted to get rid of the lord without any trouble.
In the game, you could have a private audience with the lord from the third meeting onwards, but if he was going to speed things up like this from the first meeting, it was rather a welcome thing for me, who wanted to get rid of him as soon as possible.
When we were alone, the lord arrogantly rested his arm on the back of the sofa and put his feet up on the table. It was an attitude of complete disregard for me.
Well, from the lord’s point of view, I was just a prisoner in the prison, so he would think that such behavior was natural. Would a guy who looked down on even the Knight Commanders care about a mere prisoner?
In fact, considering that the personalities of the people in the mansion had become much worse overall than in the game, it wouldn’t have been strange if he had crossed the line long ago.
“Hey, you.”
“Yes, Lord.”
“You were imprisoned, weren’t you?”
“That’s right.”
“And you barely survived because you met Iris?”
“That’s also true.”
“Did you have any trouble with the knights on the way, or have you ever fought with one of the Knight Commanders?”
“No.”
Thinking of the choices that appeared in the game, I chose my words carefully, only giving answers that would lead the lord to make me an offer. The lord nodded to himself and thought for a long time.
“Why were you imprisoned?”
There it is.
I scoffed inwardly as I confirmed that he was asking the question I had expected. It seemed that things were going to work out quite well.
“Why would I have been imprisoned in a place like that? It wouldn’t be much different from the crime you’re thinking of, Lord.”
“Hmm, I see, so that’s it…….”
I deliberately put on the most despicable smile I could muster.
If it came to this, digging the grave was almost done. Now, all I had to do was prepare the burial goods and make this guy walk into the grave on his own after seeing them.
The lord, who had been lost in thought again for a long time, finally opened his mouth.
“Are you interested in women?”
