Chapter 29
“Squeeeeeeak!!!!!!”
As soon as the blessed dagger pierced his body, the lord let out a strange scream. It wasn’t the lord himself who screamed, but the demon that was half-fused with his body.
I pulled the dagger out and stabbed it back in, repeating the process. At first, the more I stabbed, the more he struggled, but after that, his movements gradually slowed down.
Aurora didn’t even blink, watching the lord being purified and dying by the divine power with her arms crossed under her chest.
I stabbed the dagger deep one last time and pulled my arm out. The lord collapsed on the floor, limp, repeating only strange sounds like “Keeiii, Keeiii.”
“It’s done. Let’s go.”
“That thing, it’s still alive, right? Is it okay to leave it like that?”
Aurora’s finger pointed at the lord, who was barely alive and wriggling slightly on the floor.
“Yes, he’s alive.”
“Aren’t you going to kill him?”
“I could kill him if I wanted to, but I’m not going to. Aurora-yeongjunim, from now on, we’re not going to say we didn’t kill him, but that we couldn’t kill him. You have to coordinate your story with me.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll do that. But, not that we didn’t kill him, but that we couldn’t kill him… Of course, there’s a reason, right?”
“Of course there is.”
I pointed at the lord with the tip of the dagger and said.
“I said I need something to kill a demon, right?”
“You said you need a weapon imbued with divine power or a divine spell.”
“Correct. But we don’t have a weapon with divine power right now, do we? So, of course, we can’t kill him.”
“Huh? If it’s a divine weapon, you’re holding it in your hand… Ah, right. I understand. Sure, we didn’t have any divine weapons. So we can’t kill that bastard. What a shame.”
As expected of Aurora, who was a very competent and intelligent NPC in the game, she immediately understood my intentions and coordinated her story with me.
“But let me ask you one more thing. Why are you trying to hide that weapon?”
“I’m not trying to hide this dagger. To be precise, I’m trying to hide the fact that I used it.”
“Hide the fact that you used it?”
Aurora asked back. I nodded.
“A weapon imbued with divine power, as the name suggests, can only be used by someone with a certain level of faith. It’s impossible for someone without faith to use it to its full potential.”
My explanation was a roundabout way of saying that in the game, the ‘Faith’ stat and the ‘Divine Power’ stat had to be above a certain level for blessed weapons to perform at their best.
Aurora nodded in understanding, but then paused and looked back at me.
“But how did you…?”
“What country comes to mind when you think of faith and divine power around here?”
“Without a doubt, the Raphaella Holy Kingdom.”
So the name of the Holy Kingdom has changed too. It’s a good thing I didn’t open my mouth first.
“…Wait, then are you from the Raphaella Holy Kingdom?”
“No. That’s exactly why I want to hide the fact that I used this.”
At my words, Aurora let out an “Ah.”
“Because you want to hide the fact that you used a divine weapon while not being from the Holy Kingdom?”
“Correct.”
We only exchanged a few words, but we touched on the core issue in an instant. Seeing Aurora showing the same intelligence she displayed in the game made me feel proud.
“…Okay, I can understand that reason. The Holy Kingdom guys are notoriously zealous. I can see why you’d want to avoid getting involved with them as much as possible. But then how are we going to deal with that demon?”
“We’re not going to deal with it. We need to send a letter to the Imperial Palace. We need to tell them that a demon has appeared and ask them to kill it.”
In the game, there were two choices the player could make.
Either use a blessed weapon or a divine spell to kill the lord directly, or beat him up as much as you want to relieve stress and then send a letter to the Emperor asking her to deal with it.
If you think about it normally, it seems much easier to kill him directly here, but if the player kills him, an event occurs later where the Holy Kingdom shows a very annoying kind of interest.
I’d rather avoid their attention. If I wanted to avoid all the dirty and petty side quests, I had to visit the Holy Kingdom only once in the middle of the game and never look back.
What kind of crazy bastard came up with the idea of 30 long-distance delivery quests without using fast travel?
“Well, alright. The person we have to deceive is the Emperor, but if we’ve fooled him once, can’t we do it twice?”
“You fooled him once?”
“You’re talking about this idiot who messed with the demon-possessed book on his own and got eaten, right?”
“…Ah, right. I forgot for a moment. That’s right, it did.”
That was a lie in the first place. So this is the second time.
“And.”
Adding an afterthought, Aurora turned around, bent her waist slightly, and looked up at me.
“It’s only natural to do this much for the savior of my life. You’ll have a mountain of favors to repay in the future, right?”
A smile bloomed on her face.
“Iris, time’s almost up.”
“…I know. It’s not completely full yet, so wait a little longer.”
At that time, the Knight Commanders of the Silver Dawn Knights were gathered at the main gate, looking anxious. The moon was already shining brightly in the sky. Iris’s silver hair, bathed in the moonlight, shone brilliantly.
Soon, the time that the new recruit had mentioned, ‘the time when the moon hangs on the biggest tree,’ arrived. As soon as the moon hung on the tree, Rize looked around the main street in front of the gate. But the street was quiet.
“Erika, do you see anyone on the street?”
“No. I don’t see anything. It’s empty.”
“I see.”
Iris replied curtly. It was a single word filled with very complex emotions.
“Claudia, Rize, Erika. Get ready. We’re going to the mansion.”
At her brief words, the Knight Commanders, without a word, mounted their horses. They had long finished preparing to raid the mansion. They were just waiting for the right time.
Claudia, Iris, Rize, and Erika all had a reason to act so urgently. It was because of a single word the new recruit had left before entering the lord’s mansion.
He had asked if they could come looking for him at the mansion if he didn’t return by the time the moon hung on the biggest tree as seen from the main gate of the castle.
Rize had laughed, asking why he was saying such ominous things, but the new recruit’s expression had been serious. And he really hadn’t returned by this time.
Then there was only one thing to do.
If there was a conflict with the lord, the Silver Dawn Knights would be the ones to suffer, so in the past, they would have just endured it. But things were different now.
They didn’t want to lose that new recruit, no matter what.
At some point, the speed at which they rode their horses gradually increased, without anyone saying a word. Especially Rize, who was at the forefront, was practically galloping.
There was no one on the streets, so they didn’t have to be careful with their horses, and as their anxiety grew and their speed increased, they arrived at the mansion quickly.
“Huh…? What are they doing?”
“Why are those bitches here at this hour? Stop! Stop! Hey, can’t you hear me?! Stop!”
The two knights who were guarding the main gate of the mansion, yawning widely, were startled to see Rize galloping towards them on horseback, followed by the other three, and shouted for them to stop.
Instead of stopping her horse at the knights’ command, Rize drew her twin daggers from her waist.
The knights were even more flustered at the sight. They had never experienced a situation where the Silver Dawn Knights openly defied them.
And they knew that if they faced them head-on, they wouldn’t even be a match for the Silver Dawn Knights with their skills.
By the time the two knights finally grasped the situation and tried to grab their weapons, they were already frozen solid and hacked to pieces.
“Cough!”
“Gah!”
The knights rolled on the floor, bleeding from all over their bodies. Rize didn’t even glance at the unconscious knights and rushed into the mansion. Iris, Erika, and Claudia followed closely behind.
The four Knight Commanders stopped their horses only when they reached the entrance to the mansion.
“The new recruit is inside, right?”
“It’s highly likely.”
“Shall we barge in, Unni?”
“Of course we should. No, even if you object, I’m going in alone.”
Rize’s usual playful and cheerful demeanor was gone, replaced by a fierce and menacing aura that matched her hair color. She looked ready to cut down anything that stood in her way.
“Why would we object? If we’re going in, we’re going in together. And what more could happen to make our lives worse if we get in trouble for this? We can just tell the new recruit to buy us a drink later because we got into this mess because of him.”
Claudia stepped forward with her greatsword. She raised her arm high above her head and slammed it down on the main gate. With a loud crash, the gate made of old wood shattered like straw.
Rize was the first, followed by Iris, Erika, and Claudia.
“Welcome.”
The first thing the four saw as they entered the mansion was a maid approaching them at a brisk pace and bowing politely.
“…?”
Question marks simultaneously appeared above their heads. The hands holding their weapons slowly lowered.
“What, did she just greet us?”
“She’s welcoming us? I must have misheard, right?”
“I heard it too. I thought it was just my ears, but it seems like our ears have all gone weird. Is it an illusion spell?”
Claudia, Erika, and Iris were dumbfounded and frozen in place. Regardless, Rize strode towards the maid and grabbed her by the collar.
“Don’t play stupid games and tell me where the new recruit is rigㅡ”
“‘Mr. New Recruit’ has asked me to escort the Knight Commanders to the reception room. Please follow me.”
This time, even Rize couldn’t help but freeze in a daze.
As the hand grabbing her collar loosened, the maid calmly straightened her clothes and turned to walk up the stairs. Her figure soon disappeared upstairs.
But none of the four remaining moved from their spot.
No, they couldn’t move. Their minds, which had received too much of a shock, refused to think. Their mouths, agape, showed no signs of closing.
The four were finally able to follow the maid to the reception room only after she came back down, unable to wait any longer upstairs, and told them to follow her once more.
And in the room the four entered.
“Ah, you’re here?”
“Welcome, Knight Commanders.”
There were the new recruit and Aurora, sitting face to face at the table, sipping tea, looking perfectly fine.
