Chapter 49
That night, after returning from subjugating the Rock Centipede, I sat at my desk, pencil in hand.
A fluorescent light on the ceiling, the air conditioner running, a modern desk and chair, a similarly modern bed, and even paper and a pencil. It felt like I was in my real house outside, not in a game.
I don’t know why these writing tools are even here. When I asked if there were any tools for writing, they gave me a pencil and an eraser. I was speechless for a moment after receiving them.
Aurora uses a feather pen that looks like it came straight out of the Middle Ages.
Anyway, that wasn’t important right now, so I shook off my distracting thoughts and focused back on the paper. I needed to organize the situation ahead.
‘The main story I need to progress is, of course, the Knights’ route.’
I wrote the words “Silver Dawn Knights” and circled them, then tapped them with the end of my pencil. Out of all the stories in Brightest Darkness 4, the Knights’ route was the easiest and most comfortable.
The number of bosses that must be defeated to progress is significantly smaller, and the difficulty is relatively easier compared to other essential bosses. It wasn’t called a newbie-friendly story for nothing.
Even in Darkest Light mode, where the enemies’ specs and aggressiveness are generally insane, its status remained unchanged.
In the actual game, it would have been a story I wouldn’t have even looked at because it wasn’t fun, but now I only have one life. I have to take the easiest and most comfortable path possible.
Moreover, if you clear all the main stories, the player can become the 1st Knight Commander of the Silver Dawn Knights or even rise to the position of the Emperor’s direct bodyguard.
It means that the path to success is guaranteed, so the future was bright.
The side quests aren’t complicated, the story is smooth, the number of essential bosses is small, the difficulty is easy, and even the ending is excellent. It was a route paved with nothing but advantages.
‘I think I might be able to go home if I catch the World Eater… but it’s not a definite answer, so I need to be prepared.’
There was another reason why I was worried about my future in this world.
The cliché of possession stories is that you usually go home after clearing the final boss or seeing the main story through to the end, but I can’t rule out the possibility that I might have to live here forever.
So, it wouldn’t be bad to prepare in advance, right? It’s right to do what I can, cut off all the seeds of anxiety, prepare as much as possible, and then see the ending.
‘…Then, what should I do about the Emperor?’
I looked at the word “Emperor” written at the top of the paper and paused for a moment. Just like in the game, he had become an even more unpredictable person here.
If all the choices I remember become useless, I wasn’t confident that I could choose the right answer from the Emperor’s ever-changing, crazy multiple-choice options.
Unless I choose a story where I move my base to the Holy Kingdom or completely cut off relations with humans, if I stay in the Empire, I have to assume that I’ll be entangled with the Emperor at least once.
But the Emperor was notorious among users in many ways. As a boss’s difficulty, in terms of the story, and in relation to the character’s personality.
‘Well, it’s meaningless right now, so I’ll think about it later.’
Actually, if the Emperor’s personality had really changed, my actions of worrying and preparing alone here would be meaningless.
Even the dialogue choices with the NPC that is the original of Rize are still in my head, but that knowledge was of no use in my conversations with Rize.
At least Iris and Claudia had personalities that strongly resembled the original NPCs, but Rize and Erika could be considered completely different people.
Would the Emperor be any different?
‘I don’t have to visit the Holy Kingdom right now.’
I turned my thoughts elsewhere. If I proceed in a moderately arranged order, visiting the Holy Kingdom would probably be around the middle of the story, after it has progressed a bit.
I have to visit that country someday. There’s a magic I need to get from the Pope there. It’s much easier to buff myself with that spell if I’m going to beat up demon-type enemies later.
But that’s just someday. There’s so much to do right now, there’s no room to care about the Holy Kingdom. There’s too much to do in the Empire before that.
I also need to ask the Knight Commanders for help regarding the Battle Fatigue Debuff Negation Rune, and I need to defeat the essential bosses in the main story.
‘There are a total of 3 essential bosses.’
Arachnainera, the Spider Queen.
The Burning Golem.
The Blind Black Wolf.
These three were all the bosses that had to be defeated in the early stages to progress through the main story of the Silver Dawn Knights. The rest were all optional or added in the middle of the story.
If classified by location, it would minimize wasted travel time to catch Arachnainera, the Spider Queen first, then the Blind Black Wolf, and finally the Burning Golem.
On the other hand, if you consider efficiency, it would be advantageous to catch the Burning Golem first. Because the magic that can be acquired by catching the Burning Golem was incredibly effective in the Arachnainera boss fight.
My mana would be severely depleted, so even if I only used magic once or twice, my mana bar would be empty, but it’s not impossible to use magic itself.
No, if Erika does her job properly, the magic obtained from catching the Burning Golem might not even be necessaryㅡ
ㅡKnock, knock.
“Rookie. Are you in there?”
My thoughts were interrupted by a knock from outside. Soon after, Iris’s voice could be heard. Startled, I hurriedly hid the paper. Even if I reveal the truth someday, it’s not now.
“Yes, I am. Why?”
“I have something to tell you.”
At her words, I cautiously opened the door. In front of the door stood a silver-haired knight, as usual, in a white tank top and silver dolphin shorts.
To be blunt, it was Iris.
“What do you mean, you have something to tell me?”
“It’s about Lord Aurora.”
“Lord Aurora?”
“She said that all the backlog of work has been cleared. So, she said she’s going to hold a celebration feast soon.”
“Ah, I guess she decided to do that.”
Just a few days ago, Aurora was lamenting that there was no way to squeeze out a budget. But in this short time, she seems to have finished all the backlog of work and even finished allocating the budget.
“She said she worked a little too hard, even cutting back on her sleep time. She said that this kind of celebration feast should be held before the joy completely fades.”
There were three reasons for this banquet. The death of that lord bastard, Aurora’s ascension to the new lord and head of the family, and the Silver Dawn Knights regaining their original position.
“So, I came to tell you to get ready.”
“Are you telling me to ask if I’m going to participate, or is it an order to participate unconditionally?”
“Lord Aurora said that all members of the Silver Dawn Knights must attend. Especially you, the rookie, who contributed the most to this. Anyway, since all the participants are just the five of us, including the Lord, she said we can’t have even one person missing. Is there any problem?”
“I wasn’t planning on skipping it anyway, so it’s fine. So, what should I wear? Should I just wear the same thing I wear at the Knights’ Order?”
This kind of celebration feast was an event that didn’t exist in the game, and I didn’t know the dress code for medieval aristocratic parties, so I felt a little uneasy.
Men’s clothes would be normal, but what about women’s clothes? I couldn’t even imagine how crazy the clothes they would pull out as dresses would be.
“Lord Aurora said she’ll prepare everything. So, don’t worry.”
After talking to her the other day, I realized that Aurora’s perception had also been changed by the mod. It’s not something I should stop worrying about, but rather something I should worry about even more.
I was speechless when I saw her praising the white tank top and dolphin shorts as a really great uniform the other day.
“…Okay, I understand. When is it?”
“Tomorrow.”
“What?”
“Tomorrow evening, she said.”
“I understand well enough, so you don’t have to explain it in detail. Rather than that, can the banquet preparations be done in a day?”
“She said she gave the order in advance so that the banquet could be held as soon as the work was finished. The actual preparations have been going on for a few weeks.”
Is that so? As expected of Aurora’s work ethic.
“That’s all I have to say. Do you have any questions or anything you want to say?”
“No, not really.”
“Okay.”
Iris, who finished speaking, turned around. And before the door closed, a short greeting was delivered along with a deeply flushed face.
“Good night, rookie.”
“…? Yeah, okay.”
Even though she only said good night, Iris’s face was flushed all the way to the tips of her ears. Then, she quickly disappeared down the hallway.
‘Why is she acting like that?’
It was something I couldn’t understand.
And the next day.
‘I knew this would happen.’
Looking at the dresses the Knight Commanders were wearing, I realized the power of the mod anew.
