Chapter 58
My mind raced frantically. The situation was dire, a disastrous outcome brought about by an unexpected chain of coincidences.
Rize was being pushed back, unable to launch a proper wide-range attack while defending me. Claudia’s limitations were also evident, her weapon being a greatsword.
Not to mention Erika, who was on the verge of being captured by Arachnainera and having her blood drained while still alive.
‘Is there a way? There has to be.’
I sliced through a spider that lunged at my face and focused on finding a solution to break through this situation.
Rescuing Erika was the top priority, followed by preventing Rize and Claudia from being overwhelmed by the spiderlings. Both had to be achieved almost simultaneously.
I desperately racked my brain, trying to come up with a solution. I could think of ways to address each situation individually, but nothing that could handle both at once.
A way to deal with both situations simultaneously, a way to…
‘There is.’
Suddenly, a ray of hope flashed through my mind. A solution that could potentially resolve both issues and turn the tide.
‘…Is it possible?’
However, even I wasn’t sure it would work.
If things didn’t go as planned, or if Arachnainera’s behavior deviated from my predictions, we would be dead for sure. This time, it was a gamble based on probability.
‘No. We’re going to die if we stay like this anyway.’
I made up my mind. Yes, we’re all going to die if we just stay put.
Erika would be the first to go, and once Arachnainera recovered, she would come for us. We would either be drained of our blood like Erika or eaten alive. One or the other.
If we were going to die either way, it was better to bet on the option with the higher probability of success.
“Claudia!”
I shouted for Claudia. The situation was too urgent to bother with honorifics. Her helmeted head turned towards me.
“Raging Thunderstorm! Maximum power!”
Claudia and Rize both flinched at my words. It was a blunt command, but the meaning was clear.
“Are you insane, Delta?! You’ll die too!”
“I don’t care, just hurry! We’ll all die if you don’t!”
I yelled, throwing all formalities and politeness out the window. Claudia hesitated for a moment, then, as if deciding to trust me, she adjusted her grip on the greatsword.
I turned to Rize as Claudia unleashed a barrage of lightning, securing time to charge her ultimate skill to its maximum power. I smashed two spiderlings at once.
“Rize! You can survive on your own, right?”
“I can, but what about you, Delta?! Two people are too much!”
“Throw me over there!”
“What?!”
Rize exclaimed in shock. I pointed towards where Erika and Arachnainera were entangled.
Erika was struggling desperately, trying to push Arachnainera away, but her efforts were clearly reaching their limit. She had 30 seconds at most.
“Are you really out of your mind?!”
“No time, just do as I say! It’s the only way to save Erika!”
Rize paced anxiously, glancing between her sister who was about to be killed by Arachnainera, the swarm of spiderlings closing in, and Claudia preparing Raging Thunderstorm.
Then, as if making up her mind, she unleashed Frost Storm, freezing everything around her.
“Are you sure about this?!”
“Have I ever been unsure?!”
“Ugh, seriously! You’re so dead after this!”
A wall of ice formed beneath my feet, launching me upwards. With a loud bang, I soared through the air, heading straight for Arachnainera.
I glanced to the side and saw Claudia preparing Raging Thunderstorm. Crackle, lightning began to gather around her. She spread her knees shoulder-width apart and raised the tip of her greatsword towards the sky.
“Die quietly, you little brat!”
Erika gritted her teeth, glaring at Arachnainera as the spider queen bared her fangs to drain her blood. Her armor was in tatters.
Then, she saw me flying towards them and her eyes widened in surprise.
I checked the Bloodstained Sword. The buff duration was still sufficient. The conditions were met; all I had to do now was let my body take over. I plummeted downwards.
I gripped the sword tightly in one hand and grabbed the back of Arachnainera’s neck with the other. A powerful recoil jolted through my left arm as I held on, gritting my teeth against the force.
My body naturally flowed into the next movement, just like when performing a plunge attack on a mid-boss in a rune dungeon.
I stepped on the spider’s carapace with my left leg, twisted my body half a turn to face Arachnainera, and plunged the Bloodstained Sword deep into her clavicle.
ㅡThud!
“Aaaaaaargh!”
The Spider Queen thrashed in agony, releasing Erika in the process. Erika tumbled to the ground and frantically scrambled to retrieve her weapon.
I shouted, keeping the sword embedded in Arachnainera’s clavicle.
“Erika! Flame Barrier! Hurry!”
“Yes? Yes, yes! Understood, Delta!”
Flames erupted from the katana in Erika’s hand. With this, she would survive Raging Thunderstorm. Rize would have already prepared her defenses. Now, only I remained.
I pulled the sword out of Arachnainera’s clavicle and leaped onto her legs, propelling myself upwards. I hovered in mid-air, facing the Spider Queen.
‘Please, please, please!’
I prayed internally, watching Arachnainera writhe in pain. Please, move exactly as you did in the game.
“You insolent little…!”
As if answering my prayer, Arachnainera, her face contorted in rage, grabbed me.
‘Yes!’
What I had just done was a form of pattern manipulation. Bosses in the game had specific skills they would always use if the player met certain conditions. And naturally, there were ways to trigger those conditions.
In Arachnainera’s case, if you jumped within reach of her upper body, she would always initiate a grab attack.
Once caught, there was no way to escape under normal circumstances. The developers probably thought they could restrict the player’s actions by implementing this algorithm.
However, players found a way to exploit it. They would use magic spells with incredibly long landing delays and intentionally jump at the right time to trigger the grab pattern, guaranteeing a hit.
The spell would connect, and Arachnainera would release the player due to the hit stun, allowing them to avoid the damage from the grab itself.
It was incredibly difficult to time correctly, but once mastered, it was a truly useful technique. And my aim was similar.
Leap from the ice platform created by Rize, perform a plunge attack to force Arachnainera to release Erika, pull out the sword, descend, and jump again to trigger the grab pattern.
‘I’m so glad it worked.’
Honestly, even I wasn’t sure about the plan.
There was no guarantee that Arachnainera would release Erika after the plunge attack. She could have just endured the pain, ignored me, and killed Erika.
Moreover, there was no guarantee that she would use the grab pattern on me while I was in mid-air. I hadn’t jumped from the ground but had made an imperfect leap from her spider legs.
If even one thing had gone wrong, we would have paid the price with our lives. But it was the only plan I could come up with in that situation, so I had no choice.
‘It’s pure luck.’
I breathed a sigh of relief and looked Arachnainera in the face as she held me captive.
“We meet again, don’t we?”
“You came here to die on your own! If that’s your wish, I’ll grant it!”
Her initial elegant speech and alluring voice were gone, replaced by a raspy voice and harsh tone.
“I’ll chew you up without leaving a single bone!”
Crack, the mouth on her lower abdomen opened wide.
This didn’t mean she was going to eat me with her human genitalia. It was more accurate to call it a spider’s mouth.
Of course, it depended on one’s perspective. Given its location, many people considered it a human sexual organ.
‘This should be safe, right?’
There were two types of grab patterns. The human mouth would drain the player’s blood, killing them, while the spider mouth would chew them up.
However, if you were grabbed while jumping, she would always use the lower mouth to chew you up.
The second pattern that would protect me from the lightning.
“How many times do I have to tell you?”
ㅡRumble!
A loud thunderclap echoed from behind, causing Arachnainera to freeze, as if sensing something ominous.
It was the sound of Raging Thunderstorm reaching its peak. I peeked over Arachnainera’s shoulder to see Claudia.
Her dark grey steel greatsword was engulfed in lightning, its shape distorted beyond recognition. Claudia herself was enveloped in electricity, sparks flying wildly around her.
The spiderlings couldn’t even get close, their bodies trembling as they curled up their legs and died.
“Try it if you can.”
ㅡBoooom!!!!!!
Then, the lightning struck.
