Chapter 63
The opportunity came quickly. Not even three days had passed since she started walking wherever her feet took her when Stella was able to confirm the existence of the heresy she had been longing for with her own eyes.
‘As expected, God has guided me.’
Stella smiled a pure smile as she saw a group of humans in the distance, conversing with serious expressions. It was a truly innocent and kind smile.
Though the truth behind it was entirely different.
Even from this distance, the smell of demons mixed with the wind, and the laughter that couldn’t be contained due to the joy of thinking about torturing heretics.
There was no mistake. One man mixed among three women. That man must have been the one who broke the demon’s seal.
‘But, it’s strange…’
Her green eyes scanned the heretic’s surroundings.
A blue-haired woman and a red-haired woman with serious expressions, and a pink-haired woman leaning against a tree, limp and exhausted. They were all familiar faces.
They were the Knight Commanders of the Silver Dawn Knights, once called the elite knight order that protected the Imperial Palace. Stella was sure her eyes weren’t mistaken.
But why were such people with a demon worshipper?
It wasn’t a threat, nor were they deceived. Those women were acting with the demon worshipper entirely of their own free will. And they were showing a considerable degree of familiarity.
‘I need to confirm this.’
That woman, Kykilia, had a bit of a crazy personality, but she was definitely not the type to summon demons, so she could let that slide. However, her subordinates were different.
Perhaps, in a place out of Kykilia’s sight, heretical acts of demon worshippers were taking place secretly.
I’ll have to ask the Inquisitor to investigate later. Thinking so, Stella made the smile on her face even more innocent and walked towards the heretic who had noticed her presence.
“It seems like you need help?”
‘…Who is this?’
I raised my guard to the maximum. I had never experienced an event where someone approached the player right after the Arachnainera boss fight. So, what would happen next was unknown territory for me as well.
I carefully observed the woman, hoping it would help me figure out her identity.
Wavy golden hair formed elegant curves, draping over her collarbone and shoulders. Her bangs also covered her eyebrows and eyes. Her green eyes shone faintly through those bangs.
But what caught my attention the most was the nun’s habit with a considerably high degree of exposure.
A semi-circular white cloth covered her shoulders, and a triangular chest cover extending from it barely covered her breasts, which were as large as her head.
Naturally, there were no strings or clothes to hold it in place. It seemed like her breasts would be completely exposed if the wind blew from the side. Her underboob and sideboob were practically on full display.
The clothing on her side was cut almost to her sternum, revealing bare skin. There was literally nothing where the side slit was. There wasn’t even a string that looked like underwear.
The only thing covering her womanhood was the long, flowing hem of her nun’s habit, and a buckle was tightly fastened under her breasts, further emphasizing her already enormous chest.
Her thighs were covered in black fishnet stockings, and she wore high heels.
‘…She looks like an NPC from the Holy Kingdom, but I don’t know anything beyond that.’
I think the nun NPCs from the Holy Kingdom, who changed from priests to nuns due to the appearance modification mod, probably dressed like that. But it was such a long time ago that my memory was hazy.
At least the clothes of the nun NPCs I knew weren’t that revealing. At least it was easy to tell at a glance that the original was a nun’s habit.
Besides, why would the priests of the Holy Kingdom appear in front of the Arachnainera boss room? What is there to do here?
“Help? Us?”
Rize displayed an even sharper aura. She looked as if she would clash weapons with the woman in front of her if she made any wrong move. Erika’s atmosphere was also quite menacing.
“Yes, of course. The person behind you seems to be in a rather critical condition?”
The blonde woman pointed at Claudia with her finger. Seeing that gesture, Rize retorted angrily.
“Don’t point your finger at Claudia carelessly. I’m warning you.”
“Warning? Warning, you say? Did you just warn me? Pfft, puhut, puahahahahahaha!”
Suddenly, the blonde woman’s atmosphere changed.
Clutching her smooth, toned stomach, she laughed hysterically for a while, then barely managed to stop laughing, gasping for breath and wiping the tears from her eyes with her finger.
“Khehehe… Ah, it’s been a long time since I’ve laughed so hard. A warning? To me? Ah, how long has it been since I’ve met such a spirited heretic?”
‘…Heretic?’
As soon as I heard those words, one NPC came to mind.
Heretic. And a nun’s habit.
“But funny is funny, and the rest is separate.”
Stella raised her hand. As if in response, the sound of trees shattering, kwajijik, began to be heard from somewhere. I inadvertently looked behind the woman, in the direction of the sound.
The source of the sound was a flail.
A flail, whose weight at the end was the size of two human heads combined, a solid lump of iron, was flying towards the blonde woman, smashing everything that blocked its path.
The blonde woman nonchalantly caught the flail, which had a terrifying appearance at first glance, with one hand. A thud echoed through the forest.
As soon as I saw that, I realized the blonde woman’s identity. Only one person used such a distinctive flail.
‘The Inquisitor…!’
It was definitely the Inquisitor, the leader of the Holy Kingdom’s highest and strongest military force, directly led by the Sun Pope. I didn’t recognize her because her appearance was quite different from what I remembered.
‘Why did the Inquisitor come all the way here?’
I recognized the blonde woman’s identity, but I still had no idea why she had come all the way here.
While it was possible to encounter battle priests from the Holy Kingdom a few times while wandering around the Empire, the Inquisitor, like the two Popes, never left the Holy Kingdom.
Something was strange.
“I am Stella, the Inquisitor directly under the Sun Pope. And you are demon-worshipping heretics.”
Kwaang! Stella said, setting the flail upright. Even though she seemed to have just placed it down gently, the weight was half-buried in the dirt.
I looked around. If the Sun Pope’s Inquisitor was here, maybe the Moon Pope’s Inquisitor was also here. If one could come, why not two?
Considering the combat characteristics of Brightest Darkness 4, where the difficulty increases exponentially as the number of enemies fought simultaneously increases, I wasn’t confident I could handle two bosses at once, even if it was me.
“Did you really think you could get away with releasing the demon that the priests of the Holy Kingdom sacrificed their lives to seal?”
As soon as we heard the word “demon,” we all flinched. This was because not only me, but also the Knight Commanders knew about the plan I had devised to kill the lord.
Putting everything aside, it was true that we were involved with a demon.
It wasn’t that we worshipped demons or tried to bring them into the world, but it seemed that such trivial matters weren’t very important to the Inquisitor.
“We will not deny that we have been involved with a demon. However, we have never committed any acts that would be labeled as heresy by the Holy Kingdom. Rather, we are closer to being victims. This is something that Her Majesty the Emperor herself confirmed. Please lower your weapon.”
Erika tried to calmly persuade Stella, pointing the tip of her sword towards the ground to indicate that she had no intention of fighting.
We had to treat Claudia as soon as possible, so there was no time to waste on a fight here, and it was best to avoid a fight with the Holy Kingdom as much as possible.
Although we were dragged to the outskirts of the Empire, the Silver Dawn Knights were still effectively serving the Emperor. If we were careless, this could even escalate into a diplomatic issue.
But it was all in vain. Stella smiled brightly and raised the weight of the flail towards us.
“You seem to be under a great misunderstanding. It is not the heretics’ place to judge whether there is sin or not.”
Footsteps were heard from all directions. Startled, Erika raised her sword again. Women in nun’s habits, similar to Stella’s but with slightly less exposure, were surrounding us.
I didn’t have any particular intuition, and Claudia wasn’t in her right mind due to the poisoning, so I could understand that, but I wondered how they had managed to deceive even Rize and Erika’s senses and surround us.
Cheok, this time the weight of the flail pointed at me.
“Only God can judge the sin of breaking the demon’s seal.”
“…Aha. So you’re saying you’re going to kill us all right now?”
“If you are guilty, you will die; if you are innocent, you will live. If you are truly not involved with the demon, God will save you. But…”
Her eyelids, with her green eyes between them, curved like crescents.
“Do you really think you can survive?”
“Why do you think we can’t?”
The atmosphere between Rize and Stella turned as tense as a powder keg. They looked as if they would lunge at each other at any moment.
“Inquisitor-nim. You seem to be under a very big misunderstanding. If we had really done that, Her Majesty the Emperor would have already punished usㅡ?!”
White light erupted from Stella’s hand. Rize and Erika simultaneously covered their eyes. Only I, who knew what the white light was, quickly rolled to the side to avoid it.
Stella’s smile became even more menacing when she saw me dodging the light.
I know what kind of misunderstanding she’s having. Since I avoided the light made of divine power, she must be convinced that I’m really a demon worshipper. Because a normal person would just cover their eyes.
‘What am I supposed to do if I get hit by that and get a status ailment?’
It’s impossible to fight and win against the battle nuns while carrying the status ailment you get from being hit by a holy attack. If I had time, I would have warned the other two, but unfortunately, I was short on time.
I calmly looked around, aiming my Bloodstained Sword. The total number of battle nuns was twelve. It wasn’t a number I couldn’t overcome as long as I wasn’t surrounded.
It’s just that it’s incredibly difficult to avoid being surrounded.
“Alright. Let’s do this, then?”
Rize, her whole body enveloped in ice, was the first to rush at Stella. Since the Inquisitor was convinced that we were demon worshippers, a fight was inevitable. Either they would die or we would die.
That’s what an Inquisitor is.
Erika, seemingly giving up on persuasion, firmly grasped her weapon with both hands and stuck close to me, wary of her surroundings. It seemed she had realized that the only option left was to fight.
Rize closed the distance in an instant. The tip of her sword aimed precisely at Stella’s neck. It was a clean, no-frills attack.
But the problem was that Rize was suffering from a status ailment due to the white light from earlier. Before I could stop Rize, who was aware of this, a dagger pierced her neck.
ㅡPuk!
“You can’t kill me with something like this.”
To be precise, it tried to pierce.
Despite being hit directly by Rize’s attack, Stella stood there without batting an eye.
Although she wouldn’t suffer a fatal injury from a single attack due to having HP, this was a different concept. It was closer to her not taking any damage at all.
Seeing that Stella was fine, Rize immediately followed up with her next attack. This time, it was her right eye. The dagger in her left hand pierced Stella’s right eye.
“Didn’t I tell you?”
“…!”
However, even though the dagger was clearly piercing her eyeball, Stella’s expression remained calm. On the contrary, Rize’s arm, which had attacked with excessive force, trembled.
“You can’t kill me with something like this.”
The blue blade was blocked by Stella’s eyeball.
