Chapter 110
“So you’re the child Kykilia liked so much?”
The woman called Minerva stood up from her seat. The first thing that caught my eye was her enormous height, rivaling that of Claudia.
Claudia was taller than most men, and Minerva was similar to Claudia in that regard. It was a difference of a finger’s width, or perhaps they were the same height.
And that was all I could make out.
Long white hair that reached her ankles, and the fact that she was female. Lastly, a vague impression of her face. The rest, despite being clearly in front of me, was impossible to perceive.
“Could you stay still for a moment?”
Minerva, who approached right in front of me without me even realizing how she did it, started to observe me from all angles, making a “Hmm” sound.
“…Truly peculiar. Mana and Faith are harmonizing with each other. It was said to be impossible for them to coexist within a human body…”
Minerva kept circling around me, muttering something constantly. Eavesdropping on her muttering, it seemed she found it incredibly fascinating that Mana and Faith resided together within me.
For me, it was just a matter of allocating stat points, and the stats would rise accordingly. But for the people of this world, they had to go through systematic training to raise their stats, so it was understandable that she found it amazing.
It would be a problematic system if you couldn’t allocate points to Faith after allocating to Mana first, or vice versa. At least within the Brightest Darkness series, that is.
‘Oh, right. I need to allocate stat points too.’
After giving Lucia peace in the Abyss Dungeon and finally defeating the final boss of the DLC, the Creature Abandoned by God, I must have gained an enormous amount of experience.
Even at the minimum, it would be 20, or perhaps more. With that many stat points, it wouldn’t be a bad choice to invest them all in Strength and then immediately switch from the Bloodstained Sword to another weapon.
Weapon enhancement would become available in this city soon, so the time to retire the Bloodstained Sword was approaching.
“That’s enough for now. Indeed, there was a reason why Kykilia favored you so much.”
While I was lost in thought about stat point allocation, Minerva seemed to have finished her observation and took a few steps back. I couldn’t see her expression, but her voice was definitely quite excited.
Minerva, who seemed to be deep in thought about something, suddenly turned to Iris.
“Iris, would you mind if I asked you a favor?”
“Yes, Minerva-nim. What is it?”
Iris replied with a tense voice. Minerva, unfazed by Iris’s reaction, calmly walked towards me and linked her arm with my right arm.
“I’d like to borrow this child for a while.”
“…Delta, you mean?”
Upon hearing those words, the Knight Commanders’ first reaction was shock. Their eyes, each a different color, widened in unison.
As the shock gradually subsided, the Knight Commanders’ eyes slowly shifted to a “What did you do this time?” gaze. They seemed to think I had done something extraordinary again without their knowledge.
But this time, I felt wronged. I hadn’t done anything to attract Minerva’s attention in the first place.
I hadn’t brought her a magic book, nor had I chosen the mage path, so I should be the one questioning why Minerva was acting like this.
“We have no problem with that, but shouldn’t you ask Delta directly?”
“Ask the child directly? You say interesting things. As a Knight Commander, can’t you at least give a new recruit the order to follow me?”
The Knight Commanders’ faces turned into expressions of bewilderment. It was an expression that made me wonder what kind of existence I was to them.
“That’s, that’s true, but…”
Iris showed a rare hesitant reaction. The other three’s reactions were similar.
Perhaps because they had been making requests or suggestions rather than giving me orders, or because I had been taking the initiative more often, they seemed unfamiliar with this kind of situation.
Minerva looked at us with a chuckle and turned her head. In my direction.
“Since Iris said so, I suppose I should ask directly. What are your thoughts, my child?”
“I don’t mind. But may I ask the reason?”
Except for the fact that Minerva came to me instead of me going to her, it was just a matter of something I would have had to experience once being brought forward a little.
There was no harm in listening to her.
“Of course, you may. Shall I explain every single reason in detail? Or shall I explain the three biggest reasons? Choose whichever you prefer.”
“…I’d prefer the latter.”
I timidly chose the latter. I didn’t have the confidence to handle the aftermath of choosing the former.
With a personality like that, there was a very high probability that she would explain every single trivial reason and drain the listener’s soul. The source of this is my intuition.
“Firstly, it’s because I’ve figured out why Kykilia was so interested in you. Secondly, it’s because you caused such a big incident in the Holy Kingdom that the Pope herself brought you here. And thirdly, it’s because of the first two reasons, I’ve developed a personal interest in you. Does that suffice as an explanation?”
“Wait a minute, Minerva-nim. Did you say the Pope herself brought the Knight Commanders here? Really?”
Aurora, who had been quietly sipping her tea, suddenly interjected with a surprised voice.
“Why would I lie about something like this? It’s true. The Popes, who haven’t even shown their faces for the past few years, have personally used divine spells to bring the children here, as if a sudden wind blew.”
Aurora’s golden eyes turned to me. Just like the Knight Commanders, her eyes were asking, “What did you do?” She seemed to think I was the cause without needing to hear the details.
This time, I was the cause, so I had nothing to say. I averted my gaze slightly. At my obviously flustered appearance, Aurora’s gaze sharpened.
“Can I take the child with me now, Aurora? Don’t worry. It won’t take long.”
“…Why are you asking me? You’ve already finished talking with Delta.”
“We haven’t had a proper conversation since our reunion. Wouldn’t our Aurora’s heart ache if I left just like this?”
“…”
Aurora’s face flushed red. Her hand holding the teacup trembled slightly.
“I’ll be back soon, but don’t just wait around aimlessly. Why don’t you children play amongst yourselves for a while?”
A blue magic circle appeared beneath my and Minerva’s feet. The moment I realized that, the pattern glowed blue, and my vision was instantly dyed blue.
I felt the floating sensation unique to teleportation.
“…”
The Knight Commanders were dumbfounded, frozen in place, staring at the spot where Delta and Minerva had disappeared, leaving only a blue light in their wake, in a matter of a blink of an eye.
Their minds couldn’t keep up with the situation.
Tower Master Minerva, or Minerva the Eternal Mage, was a mage known throughout the Empire for her immense prestige and power, second only to the Emperor, or perhaps even equal to him.
Such a person had suddenly appeared at Aurora’s mansion and taken Delta away, saying that she had a personal interest in him. It was only natural for them to be dumbfounded.
While the Knight Commanders’ minds had stopped working, several maids rushed in, tidying up the table, bringing out new teacups, and placing them at appropriate intervals, moving in a disciplined manner.
With a trickle, they poured steaming green tea into each teacup, and only then did their movements cease.
“What are you doing? Not sitting down? Are you going to keep standing there like that?”
The Knight Commanders snapped out of their thoughts at Aurora’s words. After confirming that the four of them had sat on the sofas where the teacups were placed, Aurora crossed her legs.
“How was the Holy Kingdom? Why did the Popes summon you?”
“…There were quite a few incidents.”
“Because of Delta?”
Iris nodded. Aurora continued in a voice that said she knew even without being told.
“It’s okay, so explain everything. The work is already done. I have plenty of time.”
The phrase “everything” was particularly emphasized.
The Knight Commanders exchanged glances. Aurora had told them to explain everything, but there was one incident that was a bit awkward to talk about.
Naturally, it was about Rize and Delta.
ㅡThe lord told us to explain everything, but can I talk about you and Delta banging?
ㅡDo you think that’s okay?
ㅡToo bad. I’m sure she’d be very interested.
Rize and Claudia were acting as if they had a huge secret. It was as if they were trying to reveal it rather than hide it.
There was no way Aurora wouldn’t join in on such an interesting conversation, and Erika and Iris sighed when they saw the curiosity in her golden eyes as she looked at the two.
The scenery changed as soon as I closed and opened my eyes. I looked around.
“This is…”
“It’s the top floor of the magic tower. I use it as a bedroom.”
It was a space that wasn’t in my memory.
The Minerva’s Magic Tower I remembered was a place that made me curse involuntarily, with its convoluted structure, vicious mob placement, and Confusion magic that flew at me every time I forgot about it.
I couldn’t even imagine such a simple and peaceful space with a fluffy-looking bed, softly lit candles, a wooden desk with a few parchments on it, a wooden table, and curtains of moderate thickness.
Minerva took out some snacks from the cupboard and returned to the table. The chair pulled back on its own with a squeak. It was a sign to sit down. I obediently sat in the chair.
Minerva sat in the chair opposite me and placed the snacks on the table.
“I can bring you something else if you’d like. Or would something a little sweeter suit your taste better, child?”
“It’s fine. So, what should I do now?”
“Before that, there’s something I need to tell you. If there’s a coming, there must also be a going, wouldn’t you agree?”
Minerva raised her right index finger.
“…Uh, I suppose so?”
“It’s a natural principle, so don’t hesitate. In exchange for satisfying my curiosity, I’ll tell you two pieces of information.”
Minerva, who had her right index and middle fingers extended, unclasped her arms from under her chin and grabbed her right index finger.
“One is why Kykilia saved Aurora’s father and why she let his wickedness go unchecked.”
She paused, leaving her index finger untouched, and her middle finger touched it.
“The other is the identity of the Restoration Magic cast on the castle.”
