Ch 40: Breach
The ancients said——
“Gales do not last all morning, nor torrential rains all day.”
However, the torrential rain in Qingshui County seemed to have gone mad, falling intermittently for nearly two days.
The low-lying areas of the county town were already flooded, and even Lin Tian’s small courtyard, with its poor drainage, had accumulated water up to his ankles.
Lin Tian and Ghost Sword Sorrow were drinking together in the house, with Qing Yi and Nannan sitting beside them.
Rumble!
The torrential rain poured down like pillars, with lightning flashing and thunder rumbling.
Ghost Sword Sorrow smacked his lips and said loudly, “This wine tastes better and better the more I drink it. Boy, you must prepare more for me!”
Lin Tian smiled slightly and replied, “Alright, Old Ghost, just drink as much as you like. There’s plenty of wine!”
For some reason, a sense of unease arose in Lin Tian’s heart.
He recalled what Zhan Rixing had said that day: “The Milky Way reverses, Tianxuan shakes, and Tianquan dims, a sign of great floods.”
Outside, the torrential rain poured down, and thunder rumbled. Lin Tian frowned. If it continued to rain like this, would it really be as Zhan Rixing had said?
On both sides of the Wu River, there were nearly a million common people.
Ghost Sword Sorrow glanced at Lin Tian, saw that he was preoccupied, and asked, “What’s wrong? Missing your niangzi?”
Lin Tian “hehe” smiled: “What niangzi? No niangzi is as good as wine.”
“Come, I’ll toast you, Old Ghost.”
Ghost Sword Sorrow “hehe” smiled: “It’s time for you, boy, to marry a niangzi. It’s time to find a mother for Nannan.”
“People your age already have seven or eight children…”
Lin Tian laughed bitterly twice, not replying. No one could give birth to that many.
Just then, Lin Tian suddenly frowned, looked out through the doors and windows, and shouted, “Who’s there?”
Qing Yi and Nannan were startled by the shout.
But Ghost Sword Sorrow seemed not to have heard, calmly sipping the wine in his cup.
A figure stood in the small courtyard. This person wore a rain hat and a black garment, with a long saber across his waist, appearing aloof and stern in the rain.
“It’s me, Fang Jingshan.”
“Fang Jingshan!” Lin Tian thought to himself, what’s he here for?
Lin Tian opened the door. Fang Jingshan looked at the people filling the room and pulled Lin Tian aside: “Brother Lin, a word in private.”
Lin Tian followed him to another room, then looked at Fang Jingshan and asked, “Seeing you dressed like this, what case are you working on now?”
Fang Jingshan revealed a helpless expression: “Then you’ve guessed wrong, Brother Lin. I was almost dismissed from my post.”
“I was only reinstated two months later. I’m planning to find a secluded place in the mountains for a while. I think the area near Qingshui County is not bad.”
Lin Tian secretly slandered in his heart, living in seclusion near Qingshui County? You’re courting death. If you run into those shady dealings of the Marquis of Nantian, you won’t even know how you died.
Lin Tian raised his eyebrows and said, “You didn’t come to me just for this, did you? If it’s about this, I advise you to go somewhere else.”
Fang Jingshan looked anxious: “Brother Lin, I came this time to inquire about my sister’s whereabouts.”
Lin Tian looked puzzled: “Your sister? Fang Qingxue? How would I know about her? You must have come to the wrong person.”
Fang Jingshan said in a calm tone: “I want to know what happened to my sister at your house during that time.”
“What happened at my house?” Lin Tian looked blank.
“Nothing happened. My disciple took care of her the whole time. When her injuries were almost healed, she left. Nothing happened.”
Fang Jingshan frowned: “That’s strange.”
Lin Tian was an impatient person, so he immediately said, “Just say what you want to say. What’s going on?”
Fang Jingshan’s face turned pale, and he murmured, “After my sister returned from your place, she fell out with my father.”
“My father was already having problems with his cultivation, and this angered him even more. His evil fire attacked his heart, and he suffered a cultivation deviation.”
“My elder sister is also missing. I’ve been looking for her for several days but haven’t found her.”
“Alas!”
Fang Jingshan sighed heavily.
Lin Tian frowned: “I really don’t know about your sister’s matter. She was fine when she left my place.”
“Now that things have come to this, you should find her first, lest she do something bad.”
Fang Jingshan didn’t reply to Lin Tian. Instead, he blankly talked to himself, recounting Fang Qingxue’s past.
The two were childhood sweethearts and had lived together since childhood, but now they had become like this.
What was the reason? Fang Jingshan was still confused. This was the most painful thing for him. He wanted to find the truth.
Lin Tian could also tell that Fang Jingshan was in unrequited love. However, this Fang Qingxue was indeed miserable, having witnessed her parents being killed.
She was taken in as an Adopted Daughter by Fang Jingshan’s father. The grace of re-creation was a great kindness. How could Fang Qingxue fall out with him? It shouldn’t be.
Unless… unless there was another secret to the death of her parents. Otherwise, Lin Tian found it difficult to imagine what could make Fang Qingxue fall out with her benefactor.
Lin Tian looked at Fang Jingshan and asked, “I wonder if Brother Fang has ever heard of the Heavenly Yin Sutra?”
Fang Jingshan came back to his senses: “Heavenly Yin Sutra? What Heavenly Yin Sutra?”
Lin Tian didn’t reply. It seemed that Fang Jingshan didn’t know about this Cultivation Method. Fang Qingxue’s matter might not be that simple.
Lin Tian left the room, leaving Fang Jingshan alone in silence.
Lin Tian returned to the room, put on his rain cape, and put on his rain hat, fully armed and ready to go out, only missing a fishing rod.
“Eh! Master, where are you going?” Qing Yi poked her head out from the door, looking at Lin Tian.
Lin Tian strode out, leaving only one sentence: “Wu River.”
“Wu River!” Qing Yi was a little puzzled. It was raining so heavily, what was Master going to do at the Wu River?
Qing Yi shouted to Lin Tian, who had already gone far away, “Master! Come back early!”
In the vast county town, there were only a few people, some holding umbrellas, some wearing rain capes, hurrying along the muddy road, their faces blurred by the rain.
From the county town to the Wu River, the journey was long, and the wind and rain showed no sign of stopping.
Bean-sized raindrops, like flying arrows, slammed hard on Lin Tian’s face. The rain cape on his body could hardly withstand the torrential rain, and his clothes were soaked through, with a bone-chilling cold.
Lin Tian sped along the muddy and slippery road, splashing patches of water. The trees beside him retreated rapidly, and the wind howled in his ears.
After about half an hour, Lin Tian successfully arrived at the Wu River.
With a light leap, he gracefully jumped onto the treetop like a flying swallow. He stood steadily on the slender branch, and the branch did not bend, showing his superb Qinggong.
Lin Tian stood on the high ground, overlooking the Wu River.
The torrential rain poured down, slamming fiercely on the river surface, splashing thousands of water droplets, like a mad dragon dancing wildly. The leisurely green river water was now surging and rushing, like ten thousand horses neighing.
He saw that although the water level had risen a lot, it was still far from overflowing, and the dikes were intact.
Lin Tian also breathed a sigh of relief, muttering to himself: “It seems that you miscalculated, Zhan Rixing. This river dike is much thicker than your face.”
“Unless it’s man-made, otherwise how could it break so easily?”
“It seems to be a false alarm. I’d better go home and drink my wine…”
Clang!
A flash of lightning suddenly streaked across the sky, and in an instant, it was as bright as day, reflecting Lin Tian’s cold and aloof face.
Lin Tian’s heart “thumped” and a bad feeling instantly surged up.
Sure enough, he heard a loud “boom!” A bolt of lightning, like a ferocious evil dragon, bared its fangs and claws and struck straight down at him.
Lin Tian’s body trembled, his eyes widened, wanting to dodge but it was too late. Time seemed to freeze forever at this moment.
“Damn it!”
Then, accompanied by a dazzling fire and a pungent burnt smell, the tree carrying Lin Tian was instantly broken into two pieces and crashed down.
The surroundings were immediately plunged into darkness, with only the remaining light of the lightning illuminating Lin Tian’s figure falling from the sky.
Lin Tian only felt a sharp pain all over his body, as if thousands of red-hot steel needles were piercing into his body at the same time, and his limbs and bones were torn apart by this violent force.
His consciousness gradually blurred, and only the whistling wind and his own heavy breathing remained in his ears.
Bang!
Lin Tian’s body slammed heavily on the ground, splashing a patch of mud.
He didn’t know how long it took before he recovered. He circulated his Internal Energy to examine himself, only to feel that his meridians were burning like fire, accompanied by bursts of stinging pain.
Lin Tian grimaced in pain, “Hiss! It hurts me to death!”
“This thunder is much fiercer than the women in Sunset Quarter.”
“So fierce!”
Lin Tian smiled bitterly: “The meridians are damaged, it’s not easy to recover.”
“Heaven and earth are ruthless, treating all things as straw dogs. Sages are ruthless, treating the common people as straw dogs.”
“Are they really so ruthless? If it weren’t for the sake of the common people of this world, why would I have come here?”
“That’s right! There’s a bottle of Marrow Cleansing Pill in the System space, but I don’t know if it will work if I take it.”
Lin Tian suddenly thought that he had won a bottle of Marrow Cleansing Pill in the lottery. Now he was a bit like a drowning man clutching at straws.
He didn’t care if it would work or not. He directly poured out a pill and swallowed it.
It really worked. As soon as he swallowed it, Lin Tian felt his abdomen heat up, and the burning and stinging pain in his meridians also eased.
After a while, the pain on his body lessened, and there was no major problem with the circulation of his Internal Energy. Lin Tian immediately set off to return.
Just then, he heard a loud noise.
Rumble!
Lin Tian couldn’t help but shiver. Having been struck by lightning, he could be said to be once bitten, twice shy.
Lin Tian frowned and muttered to himself, “That’s not the sound of thunder.”
“What exploded? The sound seems to be coming from the south.”
Lin Tian wanted to jump to a tree to find out, but he didn’t dare after all. He was afraid of being struck by lightning again.
Rumble~ Rumble!
One after another, loud noises resounded around him. Lin Tian secretly cried out that something was wrong.
“Someone is breaching the dike!”
