Chapter 13: Hunting in the Mountains
At the break of dawn, a cool breeze gently blew.
Chu Liang left the courtyard and headed to Doctor Wang’s house in the village to buy some medicine to replenish his Qi and blood.
After learning of his intentions, Doctor Wang prescribed him a powerful tonic formula containing ginseng, poria, chuanxiong, and angelica root, among other ingredients.
This tonic, while potent, was not to be consumed excessively by ordinary people, as it could cause excessive energy, a feeling of heat throughout the body, and other reactions.
Chu Liang, however, was not concerned, as he had already stepped onto the path of martial arts.
“A-Liang, how could you have recovered so quickly!” Doctor Wang exclaimed after examining Chu Liang.
It was also Doctor Wang who had examined Chu Liang that evening after he was severely injured by the wild bear.
At that time, Doctor Wang believed that Chu Liang would not live long.
Later, during another examination, he even advised Second Uncle to have a carpenter make a coffin for Chu Liang.
But now, Chu Liang stood before him full of vitality, without any sign of illness.
“Just lucky,” Chu Liang smiled, not saying much.
“You must have embarked on Master Hu’s path.”
Doctor Wang’s insight was keen, as he was an experienced doctor, and he quickly guessed Chu Liang’s situation.
The path of martial arts!
Martial artists recovered much faster than ordinary people.
He lowered his voice and earnestly advised, “A-Liang, Master Hu is a narrow-minded person. You should keep a low profile and bide your time. Don’t attract his attention too early.”
“Don’t worry, Doctor Wang, I understand.”
“This tonic of mine is effective for ordinary people, but since you’ve embarked on that path, you need stronger medicine to replenish your Qi and blood.”
Doctor Wang pondered for a moment and said to Chu Liang, “In the county town, there is a shop called ‘Anbao Hall’ that sells a medicine called ‘Blood Activating Powder,’ which is far more beneficial for Qi and blood than my tonic…”
“Thank you, Doctor Wang!”
“Don’t mention it,” Doctor Wang stroked his beard and shook his head. “A-Liang, you have a good heart. If you become a martial artist master in the future, remember to stay true to yourself and don’t bully the villagers.”
“I will!”
After their conversation, Chu Liang returned to his courtyard, carrying the medicine wrapped in straw paper.
As usual, he took out some meat and offered it to the Evolutionary Appraisal Mirror.
【Tonic: Evolvable】
【Offering four catties of flesh and blood can evolve the “Tonic” into “Qi-Boosting and Blood-Replenishing Powder.”】
After the evolution, he obtained some reddish-brown powder.
Chu Liang brought the powder close to his nose and sniffed it carefully, immediately recognizing a familiar scent.
Blood ginseng!
There was some blood ginseng powder in this medicine.
There were also other ingredients that Chu Liang couldn’t identify.
He took out a wooden spoon, scooped up a small amount of powder, and put it in his mouth.
“The ginseng taste is quite strong, a bit bitter, but with a sweet aftertaste…”
This medicine was weaker than blood ginseng but much gentler.
Although blood ginseng was good, Chu Liang always felt a sense of bloating and discomfort, along with an indescribable feeling of heat, after each use.
But this powder was much gentler, as if some other ingredient had neutralized the side effects of the blood ginseng.
“I’ll use this powder for the next few days.”
In the following days, Chu Liang continued to practice martial arts.
His relatives from the Chu family came to see him almost every day, but he refused to see anyone except for Second Uncle and his family.
This made the other relatives anxious.
“Why is A-Liang being so stingy?”
“It’s not like we were unwilling to help him! Besides, he was able to chase away Wang Tuozi and his gang all by himself.”
Privately, Fourth Aunt and others couldn’t help but complain.
Because of the incident with Wang Tuozi, many villagers had been pointing fingers at them and speaking to them with disdain.
After all, everyone had seen how well Chu Liang had treated his relatives in the past.
But when he was in danger, only Second Uncle’s family stood by him, while the other relatives acted as if they were dead.
“Did A-Liang hear us talking about dividing his family’s wealth that night?”
◈◈◈
“He was unconscious at the time, how could he have heard us?”
“It must have been Second Elder Brother who told him!”
“Yes, it must be Second Elder Brother! He’s so hypocritical, always putting on a fake act that makes me sick! Why did he help A-Liang? Wasn’t it because he coveted A-Liang’s little bit of wealth?”
Suddenly, Second Uncle also became the target of their complaints.
They had forgotten that they were all hoping for Chu Liang to die quickly at that time, and only Second Uncle had given Chu Liang his treasured old mountain ginseng.
Time flew by.
After a few more days, Chu Liang stopped.
“I can now condense forty percent of my Qi and blood power.”
Chu Liang stood calmly in the courtyard, his right hand slowly clenching into a fist.
This small fist contained a terrifying explosive power.
A punch was thrown, and the wind howled like a roaring tiger!
“Unfortunately, I don’t have enough meat,” Chu Liang sighed. The path of martial arts was like a bottomless pit, consuming an unimaginable amount of flesh and blood.
The reason he stopped was that he didn’t have much meat left.
“I’ll go into the mountains to get some game and test my current strength.”
Early that morning, he took his usual hunting tools.
In the past, with the help of the hunting dogs, Chu Liang almost always had a successful hunt. But now, all the dogs were dead.
Without hunting dogs, a hunter’s efficiency in finding prey would be greatly reduced.
Therefore, before setting out, Chu Liang evolved some specially made bait.
“I wonder how attractive this evolved bait will be to the prey?”
As soon as he stepped out of the courtyard, Chu Liang ran into Second Uncle and others who were getting up early to work in the fields.
“A-Liang?”
Second Uncle was stunned for a moment. Seeing that Chu Liang was carrying many hunting tools, he hurriedly asked, “A-Liang, are you going hunting? Didn’t I tell you to rest more? Why are you in such a hurry?”
“Second Uncle, my body has recovered, I’m fine,” Chu Liang smiled and patted his chest.
“It’s just on the surface, what if there are still hidden injuries?” Second Uncle was a little anxious. He was afraid that Chu Liang would have lingering health problems, so he repeatedly urged him to rest well.
“It’s okay, I’ve seen Doctor Wang.”
“But…”
Second Uncle opened his mouth, his expression worried.
“But there’s no need to rush. You’re not short of food, it’s okay to rest a little longer. And you… your hunting dogs are all gone…”
“Don’t worry, Second Uncle, I’m just going to get some exercise,” Chu Liang said with a smile. “I’ve been cooped up in the house for so long, I’m really getting restless.”
“Then don’t go into the deep mountains, just stay in the outer mountains.”
“I understand.”
After chatting for a while, Chu Liang continued on his way.
The other relatives from the Chu family came up to greet him, trying to get close to him.
But Chu Liang couldn’t be bothered with them and just responded perfunctorily before leaving.
Fourth Aunt stood at the entrance of the courtyard, watching Chu Liang’s retreating figure, her face not looking too good. She huffed, “Hmph, A-Liang is holding a grudge against us! I didn’t expect him to be so petty!”
“A-Liang’s hunting dogs are all dead. He’ll probably come back empty-handed today,” Fourth Uncle said.
“I hope he does come back empty-handed. I’d like to see his expression then…”
In the past, all the relatives hoped that Chu Liang would bring back a lot of game.
But now that their relationship had soured, they secretly hoped that he would return empty-handed every day.
