Chapter 21: Big Harvest!
The trees are dense and lush.
Sunlight spills into the morning mountain forest, filtering through the branches of the trees, leaving only mottled golden spots of light.
Chu Shan’s little face is flushed red. He carries two pheasants on his back, and his mouth is almost split from smiling so widely.
Smooth!
Everything is going too smoothly!
Not long after entering the mountain, Chu Liang had led him to a nest of pheasants, and he had caught two of them.
Chu Shan had never dared to imagine such a good start.
After all, even Zhao Hu’s group often came back empty-handed.
“Big Brother Liang, can we tame these wild pheasants?” Chu Shan suddenly asks, turning his head to inquire of Chu Liang.
“It’s not easy,”
Chu Liang shakes his head and says, “If you really want to raise some, you can sell them in the county town and buy some grain and chicks.”
“Oh, I understand.”
“Let’s go. Today has just begun. Focus your attention.”
Chu Liang walks ahead, casually hacking at the low vegetation in front of him with his hunting knife.
With the Treasure Seeking Rat, this mountain forest is his backyard.
The Treasure Seeking Rat will help Chu Liang detect the hiding places of prey, and it will also help him find wild herbs and possible treasures in the mountains.
From now on, whenever Chu Liang has time, he can come into the mountains and reap a harvest.
“I guess I’m truly ‘living off the land’ now,” Chu Liang thinks to himself.
Next, Chu Liang leads Chu Shan and they capture a lot of prey.
Chu Shan has more and more prey on his back, including rabbits, foxes, badgers, and mountain rats. He is so tired that he is sweating profusely, and his small body is trembling, but he is extremely excited.
In the afternoon, before returning, Chu Liang catches two black-banded kraits.
“I’ve never eaten snake meat before. Let’s see what it tastes like.”
Chu Liang squeezes hard and kills the two small snakes, casually tossing them into his bag.
Nearby, Chu Shan’s eyes widen in shock, not even blinking.
Too fierce!
When he saw these two snakes just now, he was so scared that he shivered all over.
But Chu Liang acted as if nothing had happened. His expression didn’t change at all, and he didn’t even use any tools to catch the snakes, just his bare hands!
“Big Brother Liang, how can you be so amazing? I want to be as amazing as you!”
“Take it slow, don’t rush.”
Chu Liang pats the dirt off his hands and turns to walk back.
In the bag on his back, the two black-banded kraits are already dead, but their bodies are still wriggling.
Chu Shan’s scalp tingles at the sight, and he quickly looks away, following Chu Liang.
After a while, he notices that Chu Liang is not heading down the mountain and asks, “Big Brother Liang, aren’t we going back?”
“No, we’re going to dig up a few medicinal herbs first.”
After walking for about a quarter of an hour, Chu Liang stops.
He holds his hunting knife and starts clearing the surrounding weeds and bushes, making an open area.
Chu Shan says curiously, “Big Brother Liang, there are no medicinal herbs here.”
“Look straight ahead, under the big tree. There are a few medicinal herbs among the dead leaves. Look carefully.”
“Oh, oh, that’s……”
Chu Shan rubs his eyes, takes a few steps forward, and looks carefully.
At the base of the big tree in front of them, among a pile of rotting branches and leaves, five or six short plants with dark purple leaves are growing.
On the surface of their leaves are crisscrossing golden-red veins, like soft silk, with an indescribable sense of elegance.
Soon, Chu Shan’s eyes widen.
“Big Brother Liang, is……is this Gold Thread Grass?”
“Yes, it’s Gold Thread Grass.”
Gold Thread Grass, also known as Golden Thread Lotus, can dispel dampness and detoxify. It is extremely expensive in this world.
The five or six Gold Thread Grass plants in front of them are worth as much as the old mountain ginseng that Second Uncle gave to Chu Liang.
This kind of herb usually grows in deep forests, often in damp and dark places, and is very difficult to find, even for experienced herbalists.
Chu Liang slowly squats down and uses a small tool to carefully clear away the dead branches and leaves around the plants, then digs them up one by one.
“A-Shan, take these back to your father,” Chu Liang says, standing up and handing the bag containing the Gold Thread Grass to Chu Shan.
“Big Brother Liang, this is too precious. I can’t accept it,” Chu Shan quickly shakes his head.
“It’s for your father, not for you. Why are you refusing? Are you your father?”
“I……”
◈◈◈
Chu Shan blushes, not knowing what to say, and accepts the bag.
He carefully hangs the bag on his body, afraid of damaging it in any way.
These Golden Thread Grasses can be sold for more than two taels of silver.
For ordinary villagers, this is a fortune they could only dream of!
“Big Brother Liang, how did you find them?” Chu Shan’s curiosity grows. He feels that Chu Liang is like a prophet, knowing everything about this mountain.
“I found them a long time ago, but I was just waiting for them to mature,”
Chu Liang makes up an excuse.
He turns around and says as he walks, “Let’s go. It’s time to head down the mountain.”
“Oh, okay.”
Chu Shan immediately follows.
As dusk approaches, the sun hangs low in the sky.
The two return to the village from the mountain, once again causing a stir in the village.
Their harvest is simply too much, enough to make people envious!
“Is that Chu family’s A-Liang and A-Shan?”
“Yes, it’s the two brothers!”
“My goodness, they caught so much prey!”
Seeing the abundant prey on Chu Liang and Chu Shan’s backs, the villagers are shocked, their eyes wide with disbelief.
Then comes a wave of envy and the sound of swallowing.
If it were just Chu Liang, they wouldn’t be so shocked, but they saw Chu Shan.
“When did A-Shan learn to hunt?”
“No need to ask, A-Liang must have taught him!”
“Could it be that the prey on his back is his own harvest?”
Hearing the envious voices around him, Chu Shan feels increasingly happy. He can’t wait to rush to his own yard and show his parents his harvest for the day.
Chu Liang, however, is very calm and automatically filters out the words of the people around him.
The setting sun casts long shadows of the two.
It is dinner time, and smoke rises from the chimneys of every household.
At this moment, Fourth Uncle is at the entrance of his courtyard, chatting with Fifth Uncle.
“Fifth Brother, my boy should be back soon,” Fourth Uncle says proudly. “He got a deer leg and a rack of ribs yesterday. I wonder if he’ll have a harvest today.”
“Fourth Brother, your son is promising now.”
Fifth Uncle is full of envy.
In the village, everyone hopes their children will be successful.
If your children are successful, you’ll have face, and you can hold your head high when talking to others.
“Fourth Brother, can you let my boy follow Zhao Hu?” Fifth Uncle can’t help but ask, “My boy is not young anymore. If he doesn’t learn a skill, he’ll only be able to farm for the rest of his life.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll talk to Zhao Hu!”
Fourth Uncle laughs and says, “Fifth Brother, I’m not like Second Brother. Second Brother only thinks about himself. I’ve always thought about everyone!”
“I know.”
Fifth Uncle is grateful and nods repeatedly.
He had originally wanted to go to Chu Liang.
But he hesitated, observing the recent changes in Chu Shan and Chu Qiang. He realized that going to Chu Liang would be useless……after all, Chu Shan hadn’t even been in the mountains yet, while Chu Qiang was already able to bring back prey.
“I guess Second Brother regrets it now?”
Fourth Uncle is smug and smiling. He glances at Second Uncle’s yard and says, “This morning I went to Second Brother, and he didn’t have much to say. I knew he was feeling uncomfortable!”
“Yes.”
Fifth Uncle nods in agreement.
“That boy A-Liang is too unreliable. Fortunately, Fourth Brother, you……”
Before he can finish, he suddenly freezes, his eyes fixed on the entrance of the village, his face filled with disbelief.
Fourth Uncle is puzzled and follows his gaze.
“Fifth Brother, what are you looking at?”
