I Build a Floating City in the Apocalypse – Chapter 5

Chapter 5

Chapter 5

“Roar!”

Fang Bai had just entered the unit building’s main door when he saw a zombie lunging at him. His heart skipped a beat, but instead of retreating, he charged forward, pushing the metal pot lid shield with both hands. He pressed against the zombie, separated only by the shield, and then abruptly slammed his forehead forward!

Bang!

Fang Bai felt his head buzz, but he didn’t pause for a moment. He shoved the zombie away and fiercely swung the claw hammer, striking the zombie’s temple.

Crack!

The zombie collapsed. Fang Bai glanced outside with lingering fear, only relaxing when he saw that the other zombies hadn’t been alerted.

“Phew, this zombie’s impact on flat ground is much stronger.”

Fang Bai rubbed his wrist. The pot lid shield’s handle was awkward. It was fine when he was standing on the stairs and striking downwards, but on flat ground, facing a running zombie, Fang Bai could only use it as a barrier, relying on his hands to push the zombie away.

“I need to find a way to get a good shield. Hmm, there’s a police station nearby. The riot shields they have are useful.”

Fang Bai muttered, calming himself as he spoke while his eyes scanned the surroundings vigilantly.

“Also, I must pay attention to safety when entering a door from now on. No matter how dangerous it is outside, I need to slow down when entering and be prepared as if there’s an enemy ambushing inside.

If it weren’t for my good equipment, I’d probably be done for by now.”

Fang Bai looked at the several new tear marks on his military coat and silently took note of this lesson.

This zombie didn’t provide Fang Bai with anything except a bit of experience.

“I still need seven more.”

After confirming that there were no more zombies on the first floor, Fang Bai stood at the staircase and elevator entrance. After a moment of thought, he pressed the elevator button. As soon as he did, he ran back to the unit building’s entrance, ready to flee at any moment.

Although the elevator would transport anyone inside to their desired floor, what if a zombie stayed inside the elevator and didn’t come out?

What if an elevator full of zombies came down? That would be a surprise.

An unpleasant surprise.

After the previous encounter, Fang Bai didn’t dare to overlook these details.

“Ding!”

With a soft chime, the elevator arrived on the first floor. Fang Bai threw a stone at it. The stone landed with a crisp sound, but no zombies emerged from the open elevator doors.

Empty.

Fang Bai only approached after the elevator doors closed again.

The elevator interior was clean and tidy. Fang Bai pressed the button for the top floor, the ninth floor.

Feeling the elevator slowly ascend, the tense Fang Bai finally experienced a moment of relaxation.

“I can still ride the elevator with peace of mind now, but in a few days, even if there’s electricity, I probably won’t dare to.”

Fang Bai couldn’t help but think. He didn’t know when the power would go out, and the probability of a power outage would only increase as time went on. Although getting stuck in an elevator wouldn’t be fatal, it would still be quite troublesome.

The thought passed quickly. When the elevator display approached nine, Fang Bai’s mind tensed up again. He raised the pot lid shield in his left hand, ready to face a zombie onslaught.

“Ding!”

The elevator doors slowly opened. There was no movement outside. Fang Bai breathed a sigh of relief.

He glanced left and right. Both doors were closed. Fang Bai started walking down.

Ninth floor, eighth floor, seventh floor…

“Roar!”

The familiar zombie growl came. Fang Bai smiled as he saw the zombie walking up the stairs. He swatted away the zombie’s hands with a shield bash from his left hand and smashed the claw hammer into its temple with his right.

Crack!

The zombie fell, and Fang Bai gained experience.

“Hmm, it’s much easier to deal with than the zombies on flat ground. As expected, my decision to take the risk of going upstairs and sweeping down was correct.

They’re just easy pickings.”

Fang Bai picked up a dropped copper coin. There was no equipment. He also found a bunch of keys on the zombie, which he took as well.

He continued downwards.

Sixth floor, fifth floor, fourth floor…

“Huh? Two?”

Fang Bai was startled. Seeing two zombies charging up, he turned and ran.

After running down two floors and looking back, he saw one zombie fall on the stairs, creating some distance from the other. Only then did Fang Bai turn back to confront them. Moments later, both zombies lay under Fang Bai’s claw hammer. One of them contributed a copper coin to Fang Bai, while the other had nothing.

“Is the drop rate for equipment this low? Copper coins aren’t even a guaranteed drop.”

Fang Bai picked up the copper coin, his brow furrowing slightly. He looked down at the cloth shoes on his feet, liking them even more now.

“As expected, I’m still lucky. I got a pair of shoes right at the beginning.”

“I still need four more. I’ll be able to level up again soon.”

After speaking, Fang Bai pondered for a moment, looking at the open door on the fourth floor. He walked straight in. There were no people or zombies inside, so Fang Bai closed the door and sat down.

He took off his cotton coat, raincoat, and motorcycle helmet. Fang Bai wrung out his clothes, and sweat poured down.

After taking off his clothes, Fang Bai went to the family’s kitchen and mixed some sugar-salt water. He ate some Ren Dan pills with the sugar-salt water and rested for more than half an hour before feeling better.

Wearing a raincoat, a cotton coat, and a motorcycle helmet in the middle of summer was safe, but it was also incredibly hot.

For safety, Fang Bai could only endure it while taking various preventive measures.

He filled his water bottle with the prepared sugar-salt water and went downstairs again, but he didn’t encounter any zombies on the lower floors.

Back on the first floor, Fang Bai looked at the next unit building. This time, however, he didn’t choose to run over. Instead, he went to the stairwell and descended to the first basement level, the underground parking lot.

There were two or three zombies wandering around the parking lot, spread out over a considerable area.

Fang Bai went straight over and dealt with them one by one.

Having hunted so many zombies, and with their movement patterns being the same, Fang Bai had more or less figured out a method.

Block with the shield in his left hand, slightly shift his footing and turn his body, and smash the claw hammer into the temple with his right hand.

With this familiar routine, the zombies basically couldn’t touch Fang Bai, let alone injure him.

Moreover, Fang Bai had also figured out a way to utilize his high Mental Power and Agility.

High Mental Power gave Fang Bai faster thinking and calculation speed. This meant that as long as he stayed calm, he could calculate various data in battle, including dodging angles, dodging frequency, and so on.

This meant that Fang Bai could grasp things very accurately, even ensuring that the claw hammer precisely hit the zombie’s temple every time.

The increased Agility, on the other hand, enhanced Fang Bai’s nerve reaction speed. This gave him the foundation to execute various movement ideas and achieve the expected results.

With the effects of these two attributes, Fang Bai found that he could now freely face the siege of two zombies.

Just like earlier, when two zombies surrounded him, Fang Bai could dodge one, block the other, and then eliminate them one by one.

One against two, and there wasn’t even a single scratch on Fang Bai’s body or clothes.

The three zombies provided Fang Bai with another copper coin and three portions of experience.

Seeing that his experience bar was about to fill up, Fang Bai felt quite excited.

“Just one more.”
