Chapter 37: Magic
“Now then, since we’re starting with the basics, let’s begin with what magic is……”
“Magic is a method of releasing the magic power that living beings possess outside of their bodies…… That’s what the books say.”
Jaylot continued after Marie’s words.
“Correct. In the past, it seems it was written as ‘magic release,’ but it’s changed to be written as ‘magic’ due to the nuance of the magic characters. If you broadly classify magic……”
“Yes. When broadly classified, there are eight types. Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Lightning, Dark, Light, and Null.”
This time, Millenia answered.
“Correct. It seems you understand the basics properly. People have an affinity for a specific type of magic from birth, and it appears in their hair and eye color. I’m red, the color of Fire. Millenia is orange, Earth. As I said, Jaylot is blue, Water. Eld is a rare type with two affinities, Water and Wind. It’s truly rare for his eyes to have different colors like that. Usually, they end up as a mixed color.”
Lightning is yellow, Dark is black, Light is white, and Null is purple.
“Heeh~…… So then, does that mean pink-haired Sandrea-neesama has the same Fire affinity as Marie-oneesama?”
Millenia asks, tilting her head.
“That’s right. If you look closely, it’s more of a light red than pink. When you have a high amount of latent magic power, it becomes a deep red like mine.”
Come to think of it, Jaylot recalls that the redness becomes stronger when exposed to the sun.
“Well, now that we’ve roughly reviewed the basics, shall we move on to the basics of magic power? Can you two circulate magic power throughout your bodies?”
The two nod at Marie’s question and put it into practice. Marie is impressed as she uses magic perception and senses them circulating their magic power.
“You’re able to manipulate magic power quite well. At this rate, it seems like you’d have no problem fighting magic beasts.”
“It’s Faniaal family policy to train us to be able to fight even if surrounded by magic beasts. We’ve actually fought magic beasts many times.”
Millenia also agrees with Jaylot’s words.
“Come to think of it, Eld said something similar. He said there were times when his father would take him into the forest at night and leave him there.”
“Eh……”
“What is that……”
They are astonished by Marie’s murmur.
“Eh? You two haven’t experienced that?”
Millenia and Jaylot look at each other and nod.
“Then maybe Eld was joking? I’ll ask him later.”
Marie says nonchalantly. However, Millenia and Jaylot become afraid that they might be subjected to the same thing.
“Now then, if you’ve trained to fight magic beasts, I’d like to see your strength a little.”
Saying that, Marie takes a stance.
“It’s fine if you both come at me at once. Come at me with all your might.”
With that said, their three-way combat training began.
Marie doesn’t particularly struggle against the two children, but she’s impressed that their coordination is better than she expected, to the point where they could sufficiently handle even large magic beasts.
Since Millenia and Jaylot usually train together, their hearts race at the confrontation with an opponent far stronger than themselves.
The combat training went on for longer than Marie had anticipated, but Millenia and Jaylot’s magic power manipulation started to falter, and they collapsed onto the ground.
“Oh dear, I got carried away. Are you two alright?”
“Y-Yes……”
“Marie-oneesama…… Are you still able to move……”
“Of course. My magic power also has a physical activation effect, so even if I run for a whole day, I won’t get tired.”
To be precise, it’s not that her magic power has such an effect, but rather that she’s using physical enhancement magic almost unconsciously.
Hearing that, the two are dumbfounded.
“So the reason people with a lot of magic power are strong is because they can do such absurd things……”
“We really shouldn’t do any more today. Let’s have some tea and take a break.”
Marie goes back into the house, levitates a table and chairs, and carries them outside. After setting them up, she goes back inside again to prepare the tea.
Lured by the smell of tea, the two also take their seats. The sweet taste permeates their tired bodies.
“As expected, Marie-oneesama’s tea is the most delicious. The servants who stayed at the house are also doing their best, but they just can’t quite match it.”
Millenia says with a relieved expression.
“That’s probably thanks to magic. Because I’m good with Fire magic, I can understand the appropriate temperature.”
“Magic is really profound.”
“Speaking of magic, I thought it was just the basics because you didn’t really talk about anything specific earlier, but neither Eld-niisama nor Marie-neesama chant spells very often, do you?”
Jaylot asks.
“If you have a lot of magic power, there’s no need to chant spells. Spells are an aid for enhancing magic power. Since magic power resides in the magic characters themselves, chanting them reduces your own magic power consumption, but it’s not at a level we need to worry about.”
Marie takes a sip of tea.
“It’s true that that part might not be considered basic. Thanks to stories and such these days, there are quite a few people who believe that spells absolutely have to be chanted. When you’re working as an adventurer, there are often times when you don’t have time to chant spells, so you have to grasp spells that can be cast without chanting, which is quite difficult.”
Marie says with a laugh.
“But I long to chant long spells.”
“Certainly. I don’t understand magic characters very well, so I haven’t been able to understand what’s being chanted.”
“When it comes to spells, I think understanding the meaning of the magic characters first will allow you to chant better spells, so if you want to know, shall we start learning magic characters tomorrow?”
Millenia and Jaylot nod in response.
