Chapter 50: Aftermath
It was dusk when Tohlight returned to Faniaal territory via the central capital. Behind him were Al, dressed in a military uniform, and Rufus, tied up and dragged along like a caterpillar.
“This is……”
Tohlight was surprised by two things when he returned to the town where the Faniaal family’s residence was located. One was that the black haze that should have been all over the town had disappeared. The other was that Landred’s mansion had vanished without a trace.
“Let’s head to the mansion for now.”
Tohlight started walking, dragging Rufus along. Al followed behind with a sigh.
When they arrived at the Faniaal mansion, the lights were on. Tohlight entered the familiar mansion boldly. Inside, there were several familiar servants. When they saw Tohlight, they rushed over and welcomed him. According to them, Eld and the others were gathered in the dining hall. Tohlight headed towards the dining hall, not caring that the servants were watching the rampaging Rufus.
“Bocchama. I’m glad you’re safe.”
He said this as soon as he opened the dining hall door and saw Eld.
“Tohlight. You brought Al back safely.”
Eld put down the black tea he was drinking and stood up.
“It’s not just about bringing me back. Why did you call me today?”
“Ahaha. Al is the only one I have connections with the royal family. The others I’ve only met a few times or only exchanged letters with.”
“You were a former lord, weren’t you? And the head of the Five Great Houses at that. How did you manage for three years like that?”
Al looked dubious at Eld, who was laughing cheerfully.
“Good grief. I was talking to the Saintess, but this takes priority. So, what’s the situation now?”
Al looked at the people in the dining hall. Eld explained what had happened so far to Al and Tohlight.
“I see. So, that means there’s some troublesome aftermath to deal with.”
“Well, yeah. But Sandrea……”
Eld looked at Sandrea. Sandrea was smiling and enjoying the refreshments while watching Eld.
“According to that Goddess, her memory will return, right? I’ll file the application in advance, so bring her to the central capital as soon as her memory returns.”
“Sigh…… I knew it would come to this…… I was hoping to remove Sandrea from her position during this gap.”
Hearing this, Jaylot stood up.
“Eld-neesama! Did you mean you were willing to reinstate me as lord!?”
“Ah, that’s impossible either way. There’s a rule that you can’t return to a position you’ve resigned from.”
Al bluntly told Jaylot, whose eyes were shining.
“Eh…… that’s……”
“I’m sorry, Jaylot. I was just thinking that if I could get her to resign now, it would reduce Sandrea’s burden by just having to deal with the remaining paperwork.”
Eld turned an apologetic look towards Jaylot. Jaylot hung his head and sat back down.
“Then, after that……”
Just as Al was about to continue, Rufus started to rampage. Tohlight stepped on the rampaging Rufus and made him behave.
“I guess he wants to say something, so take off his gag.”
Tohlight removed Rufus’s gag.
“You d*mn old man!! Why are you doing this to me! I was just trying to get my uncle to help Sandrea meet the King!”
Tohlight stepped on Rufus again after hearing that.
“Regardless of the reason, it doesn’t change the fact that you abandoned the woman you loved. And you ran away when you saw me, so I don’t think you can complain about being treated like this, can you?”
He looked at Rufus with cold eyes that he usually didn’t show.
“Now, now, Tohlight. He was trying to do something for Sandrea, so let’s be gentle.”
As Eld was calming Tohlight down, Sandrea stood up from her seat and approached the fallen Rufus.
“You’re Rufus, my classmate, right? Why did you do that for me?”
Sandrea asked with a puzzled expression. Sandrea, who had been turned against Eld by the curse, had temporarily forgotten that she was married to Rufus.
While wondering about Sandrea’s question, Eld explained to Rufus again. Rufus’s expression turned to despair as he listened.
“S-So…… then me falling in love with her was also because of the curse……”
“No, I don’t think that’s true. If it was because of the curse, you would have forgotten about Sandrea by now, too.”
Eld said with a smile, crossing his arms. Rufus’s expression began to clear.
“Well, that’s why your past misdeeds are your own, so I can’t forgive you.”
Eld’s expression changed to a cold one.
“When Sandrea’s memory returns, please support her. I can’t do anything more.”
Eld left Rufus. Rufus didn’t quite understand the meaning of those words, but he was relieved that he wouldn’t be forcibly separated from her for the time being.
“Now that we’ve settled things, I’m going home. If I go back now, the succession ceremony will still be going on.”
“Oh, that’s right, it’s today. I thought Al would be here by now, so I asked Tohlight to go get you, but I’m sorry.”
“That’s something you should have said at the beginning.”
Al sighed and left the Faniaal mansion.
