My Master is the Real Boss Chapter 29

Chapter 29: Returning to the Temple

The Li Yuanwai group ran away incredibly fast. When they saw Master Gao Yu’an and his disciple off at the pavilion, they said they would wait for them to return. But by the time Xiang Jiannan returned with the iron spade, there wasn’t a single person in sight, only the torches remained.

The stone table was deserted, the fine wine and meat were all gone.

How are we supposed to get back like this?

Walking into the pavilion, Xiang Jiannan first took a big gulp of wine. At this moment, he didn’t feel hungry either.

He was more concerned about how he and his Master would get back later. Li Yuanwai’s actions were not very honorable.

They asked two Taoists to dig up their ancestral grave in the middle of the night. After patting their chests and making promises, they actually ran away halfway. If they weren’t guilty, then something unexpected must have happened.

Combining his previous impression of Li Yuanwai, Xiang Jiannan thought that an accident was unlikely.

Li Yuanwai had a look of someone who would cling to life at all costs. Judging by his face, he was someone who could hold on for a long time. Relying on such a person to encounter an accident was less likely than worrying about himself first.

Without the horse-drawn carriage, it would take several hours to walk back to Ping’an Temple.

The main thing was that he didn’t really know the way back. If his Master didn’t remember either, spending the night in the pavilion was something Xiang Jiannan could accept.

Coming out of the grave site, his whole mindset changed immediately. Although he had encountered a change, it didn’t affect Xiang Jiannan’s ability to regain his good mood.

That’s how the Taoists of the Great Zhou Dynasty were. They had to face unknown creatures from time to time. Now that the strange incident was resolved, under the influence of alcohol, that aura had all returned.

His Master said there was basically no need to look. They had handled the matter entrusted by Li Yuanwai very well. Two shovels down was enough to conclude that the monster that had been disturbing his ancestors had left. As for whether it would come back later, that was not their concern.

That black shadow had headed straight towards the east, and it seemed to be liberated when it left.

“How are we going to get back later?”

Sitting to the side and seeing his Master gobbling down food, Xiang Jiannan had to remind him of this very real problem.

The cold meat was still being eaten with relish. He didn’t have that kind of appetite. He just wanted to quickly return to Ping’an Temple and, as his Master had said before, take a hot bath. Or maybe a cold one, since hot water needed preparation.

“Aren’t you going to eat something?”

Wiping his mouth with his sleeve, Gao Yu’an finally felt satisfied. He looked at Xiang Jiannan, signaling him to have some.

“No need, Disciple is not hungry right now.”

“Alright then, let’s go.”

As Gao Yu’an led Xiang Jiannan to prepare to walk back to the temple, thousands of miles away in the depths of the East Sea, a large group of water demons were wailing and howling together.

Constantly, there were Yaksha patrolling with steel whips, occasionally swinging them at the water demons.

“All of you, shout louder! Do you know who came back today, you group of filthy things!”

Their skin torn by the steel whips, the weak and powerless water demons immediately raised their voices. The heart-wrenching screams of pain mixed with the sea waves and the sea breeze. The wind and the screams mixed together, making the vast sea area restless.

“Open the Dragon Gate!”

As a beam of light shot from the sky towards the surface of the water, the Yaksha who had been showing off suddenly received a signal. The one in the lead was overjoyed and, after giving the order, immediately set off to swim towards the surface.

Under his leadership, countless Yaksha wielding steel spears began to gather, creating monstrous waves. When they jumped out of the sea, they were as dense as locusts.

“Our East Sea hasn’t been this lively in many years.”

Watching the black shadow in the sky about to touch the surface of the water, one of the Yaksha was somewhat moved. In his excitement, he didn’t know how to express himself. He stuck out his tongue and licked his companion next to him:

“Aren’t you happy?”

“Get lost! You’re just as filthy as those water demons!”

Suddenly feeling disgusted by the lick, the licked Yaksha didn’t know what the other had eaten recently. They were all of the same kind, so why did some Yaksha have such a foul mouth?

He immediately stuck out his tongue and licked the area that had been licked again, and only then did he continue to wait in a happy mood.

His own breath was still fresh.

“I’m finally back.”

As soon as he touched the water, his figure suddenly expanded several times. The black shadow that had fallen from the sky finally let out a sigh of relief, transforming into the appearance of a White-faced Scholar. He raised his hand, causing the surging sea water to roll, pushing a large number of Yaksha back into the seabed. Every move he made revealed that he was the master of this sea area.

“Welcome back to the palace, Great King.”

A Yaksha approached from the side, his face full of flattery.

Today was a day worth celebrating. Their East Sea had once again welcomed its master.

“What did you call me?”

His handsome face suddenly fell, and the White-faced Scholar’s gaze towards the Yaksha was very unfriendly.

It hadn’t been long, and they had already forgotten his previous orders. Great King? That was a title that mountain spirits and wild monsters liked.

He disdained to be associated with them.

“Overlord.”

Lowering his head and quickly admitting his mistake, the Yaksha who hadn’t properly offered his flattery immediately changed his address.

Just one word difference, he really didn’t understand what the difference was between the two. As a member of the Aquatic Clan, they insisted on learning the ways of the land. They were clearly more noble than them, so why lower their status?

“Five years, a full five years.”

His tone softened because the Yaksha had changed his address. The White-faced Scholar then sighed with emotion. Before he could finish expressing his feelings of vicissitude, the tactless Yaksha interjected again:

“Overlord, it’s thirty years.”

“Oh.”

With a light and casual gesture, he directly sent the talkative Yaksha flying. The White-faced Scholar then realized that he had nothing else to say. Under the gaze of countless Yaksha, he could no longer muster his emotions and could only awkwardly announce that they should return to the palace first.

It was a good atmosphere, but it was gone…

Now he just felt a little tightness in his chest. This feeling was a bit like someone was poking him with an iron rod.

“Master, how much further is it?”

While the East Sea was lively, Xiang Jiannan was exhausted. If he had known that he would really have to walk back to Ping’an Temple, he would have brought the wine and food with him. It had only been a short while, and he was already tired and thirsty.

“Can’t you use a magic technique to send us back directly?”

“No, this place is at most a hundred miles away from Ping’an Temple,” Gao Yu’an said impatiently without turning his head, while carrying the iron spade in front:

“Master’s magic can travel a thousand miles in the blink of an eye. If that happens, our master and disciple will have to walk even further.”

You can actually come up with such a reason?

Thinking that this old Taoist was really good at talking nonsense, Xiang Jiannan rolled his eyes at his explanation.

If you had the ability, you would send me a thousand miles away, so I could go out and see the scenery. I, Xiang Jiannan, wouldn’t believe your words, especially since you’re the kind of person who insists on bringing the iron spade back to the temple.

Maybe they should go back to the pavilion and pack some things to take with them, since they were still not too far away.

“Taoist Priest?”

Just as Xiang Jiannan wanted to persuade his Master to turn back, several figures suddenly appeared under the shade of the trees ahead. They were hidden in the darkness without any firelight. Judging by the sound, it seemed like Li Yuanwai.

“Why are you here?”

Holding up the torch and taking a closer look, Xiang Jiannan saw that Li Yuanwai and his group seemed very embarrassed. There was no sign of the horse-drawn carriage. They were just wringing their hands:

“The wind is strong, so we came here to take shelter.”

“May I ask about the matter of my ancestral grave…”

“It’s done. This old Taoist still has some face.”

Raising his hand and holding the iron spade in front of his chest, Gao Yu’an replied firmly. He knew that Li Yuanwai was a good person. Sure enough, he hadn’t run too far.

(I’m updating earlier today. I have to go back to the company tomorrow, and I’ll probably be lectured by my elders tonight. I hope I can withstand it. Single young people have no human rights.)

Having transmigrated and become a Little Taoist Priest of Ping'an Temple, Xiang Jiannan feels that his life is quite tragic. Let's see how a Little Taoist Priest strives to grow while shedding tears of frustration. *** Xiang Jiannan, a modern soul mysteriously transmigrated into the body of a young Taoist priest in the remote town of Ping'an, just wants a quiet life. He's stuck with a master who's more interested in making a quick buck than imparting wisdom, and the local temple, Ping'an Temple, is more dilapidated than divine. But peace is short-lived. When a local family claims their "Peace Talismans" are useless against a haunting, Xiang Jiannan is reluctantly drawn into a series of increasingly bizarre events. As he investigates, Xiang Jiannan discovers that Ping'an Town is a hotbed of strange occurrences, from restless spirits to a pig demon with a penchant for collecting debts. With his master's help (or hindrance), and his own surprisingly potent, though often unpredictable, abilities, Xiang Jiannan must navigate this supernatural chaos. He finds himself forming an uneasy alliance with a mysterious agent from the Fu Mo Si, a government agency dedicated to suppressing the paranormal, and facing off against a variety of colorful characters, both human and otherwise. Along the way, Xiang Jiannan grapples with the meaning of cultivation, the effectiveness of his master's questionable methods, and the very nature of good and evil. His journey is a blend of comedic mishaps, genuine moments of terror, and a deep dive into a world where the line between the mundane and the magical is constantly blurred. He'll be forced to question everything he thought he knew about Taoism, about his master, and even about himself. And through it all, he must learn to trust his instincts, even if they lead him down the most unexpected, and often hilarious, paths.
