Chapter 11: Truly the Female Village Bully
Song Chu threw the snake in her hand to the ground and walked over.
She recognized this patch of green plants with red fruits as oil tea trees.
These were good things. The seeds could be pressed into tea oil, which not only tasted good when used for cooking but also had high nutritional value. It could also be used as a lubricant and rust inhibitor in industry. The tea cakes were both a pesticide and a fertilizer.
She had a book on plants in her space that had a special introduction to them. During the base construction in the post-apocalyptic world, she had also had people plant and utilize them, so she was very experienced.
Her own back basket still had a lot of space, so she picked a lot of the fruit and put it in, planning to take it back to press for oil.
Currently, the main cooking oils at home were lard and soybean oil. Both pork fat and soybean oil required ration coupons, so very little oil was used in cooking, making the food tasteless.
Seeing Song Chu picking the fruit, Zhao Di helped Teacher Lu sit down, and he also went to help.
“Can this fruit be eaten?” He didn’t know what it was.
Song Chu smiled and said, “It can’t be eaten, but it can be pressed for oil.”
Zhao Di was stunned. “This stuff can be pressed for oil? Can it be used for cooking?”
“Yes, this is an oil tea tree. The tea oil extracted from it is fragrant and nutritious when used for cooking.” Song Chu didn’t hide anything.
Zhao Di was stunned again and smiled wryly. “So this is an oil tea tree. I’ve used tea oil before. The dishes cooked with it are indeed delicious.”
“You know how to cook?” Song Chu asked as she picked.
Zhao Di didn’t hide it either. “I used to be a chef. I even opened a restaurant once, but I was reported by my apprentice.”
Song Chu knew about the craziness of this era. Not to mention reporting between master and apprentice, there were many cases of children reporting their own parents.
“Then your cooking skills must be pretty good,” Song Chu said with a smile.
Speaking of this, Zhao Di was quite confident. “Our family’s culinary skills are ancestral. My ancestors were imperial chefs.”
Hearing this, Song Chu’s mind started working. Before the apocalypse, she was a foodie. Whenever she had time off, she liked to travel around and taste different cuisines. After the apocalypse, she was forced to give up this hobby, and it wasn’t feasible in this era either.
Her mother’s cooking skills were very average, just edible.
But if Zhao Di was an imperial chef, then she could often ask him to cook for her.
“Are you still taking apprentices?” she asked.
Zhao Di looked at her strangely. “Don’t tell me you want to learn to cook? Our family has an ancestral rule, we only pass it on to males, not females.”
Song Chu shook her head. “I don’t want to learn, but I want my Second Older Brother to learn.”
Besides being lazy, her Second Older Brother loved to eat. If she wanted to reform him, she could start with food.
If he learned to cook well, they could improve the food at home.
After the reform and opening up, people’s lives would get better and better, and they would pay more attention to and have higher requirements for food. For her Second Older Brother, it was also a way out.
“This…” Zhao Di was a little hesitant.
He was already fifty years old. He had loved cooking since he was a child. He never married and had no children, but he had taken in three apprentices and taught them with all his heart.
But in the end, two of them joined forces to report him, and the other one just stood by and didn’t dare to have anything to do with him anymore, for fear of being implicated. This made him lose heart, and he decided not to take any more apprentices.
“If your Second Older Brother associates with me, he’ll be implicated,” he said tactfully after thinking for a while.
Song Chu said indifferently, “He can just learn secretly. This situation will change one day.”
“You don’t have to agree now. You can see his aptitude later.”

She paused and said, “Your life is not easy. If you can teach my Second Older Brother to cook, I will help improve your living and eating conditions. How about that?”
Zhao Di pondered for a moment, then sighed after a long while. “Alright, then let him come and learn secretly. I won’t take him as an apprentice, but as long as he’s willing to learn, I will teach him.”
After all, Song Chu was their savior, and this favor had to be repaid.
Moreover, he knew that Song Chu’s Eldest Maternal Uncle was the Production Brigade Leader. If they were discovered having contact in private, it probably wouldn’t be a big problem.
Song Chu was bold and strong. If she could occasionally get some meat to the cowshed to improve their meals, that would be good.
He didn’t want to go against his previous intention of taking apprentices, but he could teach him without any formal relationship. Anyway, they didn’t have all the seasonings and ingredients now, so he would just teach him some home-style dishes. It wouldn’t matter much.
“Alright, it’s settled then.” Song Chu felt that today’s trip up the mountain was fruitful. Not only did she get meat and discover oil tea trees, but she also found a Master for her Second Older Brother.
As for whether Song Lao Er was willing to learn to cook, there was no need to consider that. If he was unwilling and didn’t want to work hard, a few beatings would definitely do the trick.
She could definitely bring herself to deal with the cunning and lazy Song Lao Er.
After filling her back basket, Song Chu went down the mountain with the two men.
Zhao Di helped Teacher Lu walk behind her. They didn’t encounter any more danger along the way. After more than an hour, they walked out of the Back Mountain.
The two men were bad elements. They only came to the mountain to gather herbs out of necessity today, so they naturally had to take a small path back to the cowshed.
Zhao Di was afraid that people would see Song Chu with them and implicate her. When they reached the Front Mountain, he said, “Give me your back basket. We’ll take a detour from that small path over there.”
“Alright.” Song Chu handed their back baskets to them. As if remembering something, she asked, “Do you know how to make snake soup?”
Zhao Di smiled and said, “I do.”
“I’ll come to the cowshed later to find you. Help me make some snake soup.” Song Chu herself wasn’t good at cooking. If she took the snake meat back, her mother would probably just stew it casually.
Zhao Di was a little surprised. He didn’t expect her to be unafraid of being associated with them. “As long as you’re not afraid, I have no problem.”
“Is there anything I need to prepare?” Song Chu asked.
Zhao Di smiled and said, “To make authentic snake soup, we’re missing too many seasonings. Let’s just make a simple one. Bring ginger, garlic, and any seasonings you have at home. Also, bring the chicken from your basket.”
“Okay,” Song Chu nodded.
Zhao Di carried the back baskets and helped Teacher Lu leave from the other side. Song Chu, carrying the large snake and her back basket, walked back swaggeringly along the normal path down the mountain.
When she reached the village, the villagers who were working saw Song Chu carrying a headless python and were scared out of their wits. Those who were timid even screamed in fear.
For example, the female Educated Youth Jiang from the zhiqing point. They were most afraid of snakes. Seeing the bloody snake in Song Chu’s hand, they couldn’t help but scream in fear. Although they were far away, they couldn’t help but keep retreating.
Even the men in the village felt their scalps tingle when they saw the snake in Song Chu’s hand.
If they encountered this thing alone, they wouldn’t even think about catching it. They would just run for their lives.
Truly the Female Village Bully, so awesome!
