Chapter 12: Your Daughter Is Indeed One of a Kind in the Village
Wherever Song Chu went, everyone’s eyes fell on her.
Each one was shocked, followed by envy and jealousy.
Such a snake must weigh at least a few dozen kilograms. They could eat their fill. This was meat, and it was nourishing.
If someone else had brought back such a big snake, some people might have clamored that it belonged to the collective and that the meat should be shared.
But since it was Song Chu, the village bully, and she had single-handedly killed such a huge python, even those who had such thoughts dared not voice them, fearing retribution.
Besides, apart from her eldest maternal uncle, the production brigade leader, Song Chu’s mother, Tang Feng, was no less famous in the village. No one could out-argue her when she started scolding. She was both fierce and sharp-tongued.
If anyone coveted this snake meat and asked to share it, Tang Feng might just show up at their door in the afternoon and start cursing them out.
There were no secrets in the village, and the news of Song Chu killing a large python quickly spread.
She didn’t go to the pigsty but went home first. Just as she sat down, Song Jianxing came running back.
Song Jianxing was Song Chu’s fourth older brother and her fraternal twin. Not only did they look alike, but they also had equally bad reputations in the village.
She was a lazy, fierce, and domineering female village bully, and her fourth brother was a good-for-nothing village hoodlum.
“Meier, I heard you killed a big python?” He shouted as he rushed in.
Then his gaze fell on the ground not far from the courtyard. “It’s true, this snake is huge.”
Song Chu also looked at this fourth brother. Unlike the other men in the countryside, he had fair skin, a handsome appearance, and a tall, straight figure. He looked seventy to eighty percent similar to her.
Before Gu Yue came to the village, he was the village’s most handsome young man.
“Where have you been messing around?” She asked.
This guy was very wild. He usually hung out with a few other hoodlums in the village, sometimes not coming home when they were having fun.
Song Lao Si walked over, squatted down, and poked the snake with his hand. “I went to Song Gouzi’s house to play cards yesterday.”
“Meier, what are you going to do with this snake?” He then raised his head and asked with a smile.
Song Chu raised an eyebrow. “Do you have any ideas?”
“Hehe.” Song Lao Si chuckled slyly. “This is good stuff. If we take it to the city to sell, we can get at least a few dozen yuan.”
Song Chu asked, “Are you talking about the black market?”
“Of course, we can only get a good price at the black market,” Song Lao Si nodded.
“Do you have connections?” Seeing his expression, Song Chu knew he had done this kind of thing many times before.
“When we’re short of money, we’ll find something to sell at the black market. We also buy things to sell. I have connections. I even know a black market boss,” Song Lao Si said smugly.
Song Chu frowned slightly. “Find something? You haven’t been stealing chickens and dogs with those people, have you?”
Song Lao Si pouted. “Stealing chickens and dogs is so low-class. How could I do that?”
“We go up the mountain to find wild chickens, mushrooms, and stuff to sell. But wild chickens and rabbits are hard to catch. It depends on luck. We can only sell them once in a while.”
He then said cheerfully in a low voice, “Later, we found that eggs and vegetables sell well on the black market. When they’re short of money, they’ll go to other villages and secretly collect some eggs and vegetables to sell.”
“You’re quite bold.” Song Chu was worried that he had already gone down the path of stealing. It was good that he hadn’t.
“Fortune favors the bold.” Song Lao Si said indifferently. He quickly brought the topic back to the snake. “Meier, if you trust me, just let me handle selling this snake meat. Just give me a little something for my trouble.”
Song Chu saw the light in her fourth brother’s eyes, indicating that he liked doing this. He knew about collecting eggs from the countryside to sell on the black market, so he had some business acumen.
She could explore his potential in this area. After all, it wasn’t many years until the reform and opening up.
◈◈◈
“I’m not going to sell this snake meat. I’ll have you sell something else in a few days,” Song Chu said.
“You’re not selling so much snake meat? What are you going to do with it?” Song Lao Si asked.
“Eat it, of course.” Song Chu rolled her eyes at him. “Don’t remember this snake meat. We’ll give some to each family, and we’ll keep the rest for ourselves.”
In the past, her mother would take her to other people’s houses, taking things without giving anything in return. Song Chu didn’t plan on doing that.
Many relationships are maintained through give and take. For example, her mother often went to her eldest maternal uncle’s house to take things. Her eldest maternal uncle might not have minded, but his son and daughter-in-law were quite unhappy about it.
Song Lao Si wasn’t stingy. He was the carefree type. “Alright, it’s good for us to eat it too.”
Come to think of it, he hadn’t eaten meat in over a month. He couldn’t help but swallow at the sight of the snake meat.
“By the way, you said you’d have me sell something in a few days. What is it?” He asked curiously.
Song Chu asked back, “Does the black market have oil?”
“Occasionally, but it’s rare.” Song Lao Si was a smart guy. “Meier, can you get your hands on some oil? If you can, this stuff will definitely sell well.”
“Yes, when I get it, I’ll give it to you to sell and see how it goes.” Song Chu planned to extract the tea oil, give some to her fourth brother to sell, and exchange it for some daily necessities and malt extract.
Song Daniu and Song Sanniu were too thin. They looked malnourished and needed nourishment.
She also wanted to improve the family’s living conditions. They couldn’t do that without money.
Her fourth brother was familiar with the black market, so she’d let him shine in that area.
“Leave it to me. No problem.” Song Lao Si patted his chest.
He looked at Song Chu with a grin and praised, “Meier, you’re getting more and more capable.”
In the past, although his sister was strong, she wouldn’t dare to go into the back mountain to catch snakes, let alone get oil.
Song Chu raised her chin. “Of course, I have many more talents.”
“Come, let Brother give you a shoulder massage. You’ve worked hard.” Song Lao Si stood up, walked behind Song Chu, and started massaging her shoulders, acting like a lackey.
If his sister could really get oil, he’d massage her shoulders every day.
Song Chu didn’t refuse. Her brothers needed some proper guidance.
Then Tang Feng and Song Lao Er also came running back.
Song Lao Er looked at the snake on the ground with some fear, but his eyes were shining, and he swallowed. So much meat would last for several meals.
Tang Feng first pulled Song Chu up with a concerned expression. “Yaobao, why did you go and kill a snake? The back mountain is so dangerous. If anything happened to you, how could Mom live?”
The difference in their focus showed who truly cared about her the most.
Song Chu held her hand and said with a smile, “Mom, don’t worry. I’m very strong. I killed this snake with one swing of the sickle. I’m not even afraid of tigers or wolves. Besides, wild animals rarely come out during the day. It’s absolutely safe for me.”
Tang Feng carefully examined her and saw that she wasn’t injured and her clothes were clean. Only then did she completely relax. Her face bloomed into a smile, and she said proudly and smugly, “No other girl in this village is as capable as my Yaobao.”
Song Lao Er and Song Lao Si thought to themselves, your daughter is indeed the only one in the village who dares to kill a big python.
But this way, even fewer people would dare to marry their little sister. They didn’t know why their mother was so smug. Shouldn’t she be more worried…?
