Chapter 15: Who Says I Can’t Play D*rty?
After delivering the snake meat, Song Chu heard someone calling her just as she reached her doorstep.
She turned around and saw a young woman with delicate features and slightly sallow skin waving at her.
“Mom, you go in first.”
Tang Feng also saw the woman. Although she didn’t particularly like her, this girl was her daughter’s only friend in the village. So she nodded and went inside.
Song Chu walked over to Fang Yuelan. “What is it?”
Fang Yuelan hid her displeasure towards Song Chu, a smile on her face. “Song Chu, I heard you caught a big snake. I just wanted to see if you were hurt.”
In the past, if she showed this kind of concern and hinted around a bit, that fool would definitely give her a piece of snake meat.
“I’m not hurt. If there’s nothing else, I’m going home,” Song Chu said indifferently.
This person was the original host’s friend in the village, or more accurately, the only woman who was willing to hang out with the original host without being gossiped about or scolded together.
The original host had a very bad reputation in the village, being both lazy and fierce. Fang Yuelan, on the other hand, had a very good reputation, being diligent and gentle. The two were like a living, breathing contrast.
She rummaged through her memories and found that many of the things the original host did that ruined her reputation were actually secretly instigated by this person.
For example, Fang Yuelan would come to her crying, complaining about how her older brothers and their wives bullied her. The original host would then go and stand up for her, scolding her sisters-in-law and giving her brothers a beating.
But Fang Yuelan would always play the good guy, trying to break up the fights and so on.
Another example was when the original host was able to attend junior high school. Originally, Fang Yuelan’s family wouldn’t let her continue her studies. But after she cried to the original host, the original host went to her house and made a scene, hitting her nephews and nieces, and forcing them to let her attend junior high school as well.
During their time in junior high school, under Fang Yuelan’s deliberate efforts, they continued to be a contrast.
Although the original host was much prettier, everyone avoided her. Fang Yuelan, on the other hand, was someone everyone liked to be around.
The original host had also beaten up several male classmates who supposedly had ill intentions towards Fang Yuelan, further damaging her reputation.
Basically, the original host would take the blame for bad things, while Fang Yuelan would play the peacemaker. Whenever the original host had something good, she would often be coaxed into giving Fang Yuelan a share.
Furthermore, the original host’s previous attempts to force Gu Yue into marriage were also instigated by Fang Yuelan, who claimed that as long as she caught Gu Yue doing something wrong, she could definitely marry him.
So the original host often staked out and followed Gu Yue, which led to her discovering his relationship with Old Gu in the cowshed.
The original host’s liking for Gu Yue was also guided by this person, who constantly whispered in her ear about how good Educated Youth Gu was and hinted that only the original host was worthy of him in the whole village.
After hearing this kind of suggestive talk for a long time, the original host started paying more attention to Gu Yue, gradually developing feelings for him, and eventually believing that he should be hers.
Song Chu didn’t need to guess to know Fang Yuelan’s purpose for coming here. She wanted a share of the snake meat.
But she wouldn’t indulge her anymore, nor would she continue to be friends with Fang Yuelan.
Fang Yuelan didn’t expect Song Chu to be so cold. She felt uncomfortable but pretended to joke, “Why are you in such a hurry to go home? Could it be that you want to deliver snake meat to Educated Youth Gu?”
Song Chu raised her lips and smiled generously. “Yes, I’m going to give him snake meat. He loves our family’s cooking the most.”
“…” Fang Yuelan was speechless. How could Educated Youth Gu possibly like Song Chu’s family’s cooking?
Her eyes flickered, and she asked as if curious, “I heard you delivered food to Educated Youth Gu yesterday and today at noon?”
“Yes, his leg is injured, and it’s inconvenient for him to cook, so he asked me to help deliver food. Who asked me to have such a good relationship with him?” Song Chu said meaningfully.
Fang Yuelan clenched her hands and then immediately relaxed them. She probed, “Why would he ask you to deliver food?”
◈◈◈
Educated Youth Gu had been quite annoyed by Song Chu’s pestering before. Why would he suddenly change his attitude and let her deliver food?
Logically, it should be Song Chu who persistently insisted on delivering the food. But with Educated Youth Gu’s personality, if he wasn’t willing, he definitely wouldn’t eat it.
But she heard from Educated Youth Jiang that Song Chu delivered food to Educated Youth Gu with his consent. This made her confused, and she urgently wanted to know why.
Song Chu raised an eyebrow. “He asked me to deliver food. What’s it to you?”
Then she looked Fang Yuelan up and down. “You like Gu Yue, don’t you?”
Fang Yuelan didn’t expect Song Chu to say that so suddenly. Her body stiffened, and her face unconsciously flushed red. She quickly denied it, “How could I possibly like Educated Youth Gu? Don’t talk nonsense.”
She definitely couldn’t admit it in front of Song Chu. Otherwise, with this woman’s explosive temper, it would be a bit troublesome. She didn’t have the patience to coax her now.
Song Chu originally wanted to turn around and leave, not wanting to deal with this white lotus.
But seeing someone passing by, she suddenly had an idea. She deliberately snorted coldly, “Don’t deny it. I know everything.”
“Fang Yuelan, I used to foolishly treat you as a friend, but I didn’t expect you to try to steal my man. If you like Gu Yue, go and pursue him openly. What’s the point of coming to me to inquire about his news?”
From this woman’s expression, she was already sure that she liked Gu Yue, and it should be a deep affection.
Previously, she deliberately instigated the original host to pursue and force Gu Yue, also intending to make him hate the original host. Then she would approach Gu Yue gently, creating a contrast.
But now Song Chu wasn’t willing to continue to be a stepping stone for her, nor would she be her contrast.
“I didn’t, I…” Fang Yuelan shook her head anxiously.
But Song Chu didn’t give her a chance to say more. “So you’re such a despicable person. I finally see you for who you are.”
People passing by couldn’t help but slow down to listen to the gossip as the two argued. Some even stood at a distance.
Song Chu deliberately glared at Fang Yuelan. “You used to tell me that your two older brothers and their wives made you do all the work, and even your nephews and nieces bullied you. You said your family mistreated you, and I went to avenge you. But then you turned around and made up with them.”
“You like Gu Yue but always made me pester him. Did you think that if he got annoyed with me, you would have a chance?”
“Go home and look in the mirror. Are you as pretty as me? Even if Gu Yue doesn’t want me, he would never look at you.” She attacked where it hurt the most.
Song Chu could somewhat guess the psychology of people like Fang Yuelan.
On the one hand, she was jealous that the original host was very pampered at home and didn’t have to do any work, unlike her who had to do everything at home. On the other hand, the original host was fair-skinned and beautiful. Although fierce, she was also the village flower. Fang Yuelan, who was merely delicate-looking with sallow skin, was even more jealous and hateful.
Song Chu was not interested in getting entangled with such a person. It was a complete waste of her time, but she wasn’t going to let her off easily either.
So directly tearing off her face in public was the best way. Then, she would spread Fang Yuelan’s complaints about her brothers and their families. She didn’t believe that those people wouldn’t have any thoughts about it.
