Chapter 256: Just in Time
Several people walked to the place where Gu Yue’s Father and others lived and sat down.
It could be seen that it had been repaired. Many places that were previously drafty had been patched up with new adobe. The two of them lived in a separate, newly built room.
This must have been arranged by Brigade Leader Wu. He’s a smart one.
Gu Yue’s Older Brother poured a cup of hot water for each of them. “Xiao Song, you’ve worked hard, coming all the way here again.”
Song Chu said with a smile, “It’s no trouble. It’s only right that I accompany Gu Yue to see you.”
Gu Yue smiled and said, “Dad, Big Brother, my partner is great, isn’t she?”
Gu Yue’s Father and Gu Yue’s Older Brother exchanged a smile. “Of course, Xiao Song is great.”
“You mustn’t bully Xiao Song in the future, or I won’t let you off.” Gu Yue’s Father specifically warned Gu Yue.
Xiao Song had been with them during their difficult times and didn’t dislike or avoid them because of their family’s sent-down status. Their family couldn’t let such a good female comrade down.
Gu Yue nodded with a wry smile. “Don’t worry, I dote on her more than anything. How could I possibly bully her?”
Besides, if anyone were to be bullied, it would be him being bullied by Song Xiaochu.
Gu Yue’s Father smiled. “That’s more like it.”
He found that his younger son had really changed a lot. He wouldn’t have said such things before. In his memory, his son was either rebellious or aloof, not as lively as he was now.
Such a change must be due to Song Chu’s influence.
Therefore, he was more and more satisfied with this future daughter-in-law.
“Did you have good results at the trade fair?” Gu Yue’s Father asked.
Gu Yue nodded. “Extremely good. Song Xiaochu brought us a lot of glory.”
Hearing this, Gu Yue’s Father became interested. “How did she bring glory?”
Gu Yue then recounted how Song Chu calmly waited for the foreigners to come to her, how she made them sign contracts on her terms, and how she gave the cold shoulder to those arrogant and demanding foreign businessmen, making them furious yet still having to sign the contracts grudgingly.
Although he was a science and engineering student, he was quite eloquent. He vividly described the situation at the trade fair, especially Song Chu’s actions. He even added the words she said: “One’s integrity cannot be lost, and one’s spine cannot be bent.”
Gu Yue’s Father and Gu Yue’s Older Brother couldn’t help but applaud in approval.
They already knew that Song Chu was capable, but they didn’t expect her to be so ambitious and principled. She was truly worthy of being the Gu family’s daughter-in-law.
“Xiao Song did well.” Gu Yue’s Father looked at Song Chu with admiration.
Gu Yue’s Older Brother nodded. “The trade fair needs more people like Xiao Song.”
Song Chu was much more modest in front of the two elders. She smiled and replied, “I just followed my heart.”
Gu Yue’s Father smiled. “That’s what’s most commendable.”
In the face of profit, how many people could stick to their principles and do what she did?
Seeing his father and older brother becoming more and more satisfied with his Song Xiaochu, the smile on Gu Yue’s face deepened.
Song Chu and the others brought rice, flour, oil, meat, and plenty of packaged cooked chicken, duck, and fish.
Gu Yue cooked a sumptuous dinner and brought two bottles of wine. They had a good meal and drinks with the people from the farm.
Because Song Chu wasn’t very good at cooking, but she loved good food, Gu Yue didn’t want to rely on Song Lao Er for meals in the future.
He had heard a saying before: to keep someone you like, you’d better capture their stomach. So, every time he returned to the cowshed in the village, he would ask Zhao Di for cooking lessons.
He was also naturally talented, so the dishes he made became increasingly delicious.
This was another reason why Song Chu considered Gu, the Academic God, to be a very considerate man.
As for Gu Yue’s Father and Gu Yue’s Older Brother, they had no objections to Gu Yue cooking.
As long as their son/younger brother was happy, that was all that mattered. Their family wasn’t feudal. Instead, they were quite open-minded and didn’t have the idea that the woman must cook and serve the whole family.
◈◈◈
Song Chu liked the open-mindedness and atmosphere of Gu Yue’s elders. Since Gu, the Academic God, was willing to spoil her, she would let him. She wouldn’t coyly refuse.
After dinner, they sat for a while. Song Chu and Gu Yue left and went to Brigade Leader Wu’s house to stay overnight, as previously arranged.
Brigade Leader Wu’s daughter had just gotten married, so Song Chu stayed in her room. Gu Yue stayed in the room of his son who worked in the county town.
Gu Jin stayed at the farm with Gu Yue’s Father and Gu Yue’s Older Brother to spend more time together.
The next day, the two had to rush back to the provincial capital, so they went to the farm for breakfast at dawn.
They had bought plenty of steamed buns yesterday, so today they had them with porridge.
Gu Yue’s Older Brother said to Gu Yue, “I heard from Xiao Jin that he’s been living in the county town and that Xiao Song’s cousin has been taking good care of him. When you go back, please help me thank her.”
It seemed that his son really liked Song Chu’s cousin and even relied on her. So he felt that she must have taken good care of him and deserved thanks.
Gu Yue nodded with a smile. “Sister Ping has indeed been taking good care of Xiao Jin. When Song Xiaochu and I are busy, she helps pick him up and drop him off and often makes him delicious food. I’ll convey your thanks.”
Gu Yue’s Older Brother nodded with a smile. “Okay, I’ll trouble you for now.”
He couldn’t go and thank her in person yet.
After breakfast, seeing that it was about time, the two left with Gu Jin.
Although they were still reluctant to part, Gu Yue’s Father and Gu Yue’s Older Brother were already very satisfied. They saw the three off at the farm entrance and watched their backs disappear before turning back to work.
Because he was already familiar with the road, Gu Yue drove faster than before. They returned to the provincial capital before dinner.
Song Chu and Gu Yue first returned to the hotel to take a shower. Seeing that there were still two hours before the trade fair ended, they decided to go and take a look.
As soon as they arrived at the booth, they saw Sheng Qingyang and others talking with a foreign businessman. Not only was Xu Ting there, but Xu Wei and many others were also present.
An interpreter was speaking between the two parties. The foreign businessman kept frowning and asking questions. The director of the machinery factory kept explaining, but it seemed to make the other party even more dissatisfied.
“What’s going on?” Song Chu walked over and asked.
Seeing Song Chu and Gu Yue, Sheng Qingyang and the others looked like they had seen their saviors.
“This foreign businessman wants to buy our vacuum packaging machine, but he wants to know the detailed working principle of the machine and has raised many questions. The technician from the machinery factory didn’t come with us, so we can’t answer them.”
Sheng Qingyang paused and said, “He’s not willing to sign the contract without understanding the principle, so we’ve been stuck here.”
He wanted to tell the foreign businessman to take it or leave it, but the key was that the other party’s attitude had been good the whole time, and he didn’t have that arrogant, condescending attitude. He just kept asking professional questions.
According to this foreign businessman, the number of machines he wanted to buy was huge, far exceeding that of the previous foreign businessmen. Moreover, the questions he asked were legitimate. They couldn’t answer them and didn’t want to lose such a big order, so they were extremely anxious.
They couldn’t contact Song Chu and Gu Yue earlier, so everyone was mentally prepared to lose the order.
They also realized that without Song Chu and Gu Yue, when it came to more difficult professional matters and negotiations, everyone was powerless.
Song Chu roughly understood what he meant. She smiled and said, “Understanding the principle is easy.”
Then she turned to her Gu, the Academic God, and gave him a “you’re up” look.
Gu Yue nodded slightly and proactively started talking to the foreigner in fluent foreign language. He even took him to the vacuum packaging machine to explain.
The foreign businessman’s expression improved a lot, and the two even started discussing professionally.
Seeing the foreign businessman’s frown turn into a smile, everyone present breathed a sigh of relief, exclaiming that Song Chu and Gu Yue had arrived just in time.
