Chapter 26: Can she do it?
Song Chu knew what her uncle meant.
She nodded in assurance, “No problem, since Big Uncle trusts me so much, I definitely won’t let you down.”
Fortunately, the village’s brigade leader was her own uncle, and not someone else. Otherwise, even if they agreed to let her open the oil pressing workshop, they probably wouldn’t have given her free rein.
Then she looked at her two cousins and said, “When the time comes to set up the oil pressing workshop, I’m afraid I’ll have to ask Big Cousin or Second Cousin to come and help.”
Both of her cousins were honest, hardworking, and not cunning. They had also treated her quite well in the past, so she felt comfortable using them.
Both of them showed delight upon hearing this. If the oil pressing workshop really came to fruition, it would be a good place to be, better than toiling in the fields.
“No problem, just give us the word when the time comes, Cousin.” Both of them said in unison.
Both of their wives smiled, no longer resenting Song Chu as much. It was good that she remembered her two cousins; their usual care for her hadn’t been in vain.
“If you’re too busy, I can help too.” Big Cousin’s Wife’s mind was moved, and she said with a smile.
Second Cousin’s Wife wasn’t willing to be outdone, “That’s right, Chu Chu, if you’re too busy, just call on us.”
Song Chu neither agreed nor refused, “We’ll see when the time comes.”
That evening, after Song Chu left, Tang Min asked his second son to call the village cadres to their home.
He took out the oil Song Chu had brought and asked his wife to cook a couple of dishes with it to go with the wine. He discussed the matter with the cadres while they drank.
There weren’t many village cadres; besides him, there were four others.
At first, they didn’t pay much attention to Tang Min’s words. However, seeing the clear oil and tasting the fragrant dishes cooked with it, they started to consider it.
In the end, out of respect for Tang Min, they agreed to buy the oil press and establish the oil pressing workshop. After all, it wouldn’t cost anything, and each household in the village could get a share of the oil, which was a good thing. The villagers wouldn’t object.
However, none of them thought the oil pressing workshop would amount to much, and thus they agreed to let Song Chu manage the matter.
When they returned home, the cadres also told their families about this. By the time they went to work the next morning, almost the entire village knew.
“Will this oil pressing workshop work? I’ve never heard of those wild fruits on the mountain being able to produce oil.”
“I haven’t heard of it either, but my father ate the dishes cooked with that oil yesterday, and he said they were quite fragrant.”
“Are they really going to let Song Chu do this? Can she do it?”
“It’s said that it’s because she discovered the tea seeds, she took them to be pressed into oil, she contacted the people to buy the machine, and she requested it, so they’re letting her manage it. Whether she can do it or not, I don’t know.”
“I doubt it. That woman, besides fighting and being lazy, what else can she do? There’s no way she can manage an oil pressing workshop well.”
“How about we ask the village to replace her with someone else? The more I think about it, the more I feel that Song Chu is not reliable.”
“You go and suggest it then? If Song Chu beats you up, we won’t dare to help.”
If it weren’t for Song Chu’s combat power, many people in the village would have already stood up to object.
They had no objection to setting up the oil pressing workshop. After all, they could get a share of the oil without spending any money, so they were looking forward to it.
But the fact that Song Chu was in charge was a big issue for everyone.
However, no one dared to be the first to speak out, firstly, because they were afraid Song Chu would come and beat them up, and secondly, they were afraid Tang Feng would come to their door and scold them. Haven’t you seen how embarrassed the Fang family has been these past two days when they go out?
“Then let her manage it for now. If there’s a problem, we’ll all go and make a fuss together. After all, the Brigade Leader is still fair.”
“That’s right, let’s see what Song Chu can do. If it closes down after a few days, we won’t stand for it.”
So everyone made up their minds to wait and see if Song Chu messed up before requesting a replacement. That was a three-hundred-yuan machine, it couldn’t be wasted.
When the Song family went to work, they also heard a lot of gossip from the villagers, and they were all unhappy.
It was a pity that the most powerful fighters, Tang Feng and Song Chu, were not present, otherwise, these people wouldn’t have been so unrestrained.
◈◈◈
Early this morning, Song Chu took her Second Older Brother and Fourth Older Brother to the mountain to pick tea seeds. Tang Feng helped her by cutting pigweed in her place.
The three of them brought back several large bags of oil tea fruit and also caught two pheasants.
Song Chu didn’t let Song Lao Er kill the two pheasants. She planned to take them in the afternoon to give to Guo Dong and the person in charge of the machines. They might have to deal with them in the future.
After lunch, Song Chu went to deliver food to Gu Yue.
The educated youths at the Zhiqing Point were also discussing the oil pressing workshop. Like the villagers, they didn’t believe that Song Chu could make it work.
However, when they saw Song Chu step into the yard, they all shut up as if they hadn’t said anything and slipped into their rooms.
Song Chu didn’t care. During lunch, she had also heard her Eldest Sister-in-Law’s complaints, relaying what the villagers were saying about her.
It was because her previous image of being lazy and incompetent was too deeply ingrained. She couldn’t change it overnight.
This was also one of the reasons why she wanted to manage the oil pressing workshop. Only by proving that she could do it, that she would do it well, and most importantly, that she would bring practical benefits to every household in the village, would they slowly begin to trust her, support her, and tolerate her doing more things.
When Gu Yue saw her come in, he asked with a smile, “You’re moving pretty fast. Did you encounter any problems?”
“Everything else is fine, it just depends on whether you can fix the machine.” Song Chu said with a confident smile.
Gu Yue raised his lip, “Looks like I have a heavy burden on my shoulders.”
“Of course.” Song Chu handed him the basket, “Eat quickly, finish reading after you eat. I have to go to the county town at 1:30 PM.”
Gu Yue took the basket, took out the food, and ate quickly.
Then he entered Song Chu’s half of the laboratory. She had already found the book and handed it to him.
He first opened the book to the page with the model of the oil press that Song Chu mentioned and studied it carefully.
At 1:20 PM, Song Chu left the Zhiqing Point. Gu Yue took a pen and drew what he had seen in the book on paper.
If Song Chu saw the structural diagram he drew, she would be a little surprised because it was exactly the same as the one in the book. Even the smallest details were drawn and annotated. This kind of memory and hands-on ability was not ordinary.
Meanwhile, Song Chu rode her bicycle, taking her Big Uncle and the village accountant to the county’s oil pressing factory.
Because she had been there once yesterday, and Song Chu was so beautiful that she was easily remembered, the gatekeeper let them in.
She took the two directly to Guo Dong’s office.
Guo Dong didn’t expect Song Chu to be so quick, bringing people from her village today.
Song Chu entered the office and introduced the people to Guo Dong, “Director Guo, this is our village’s Brigade Leader, Tang Min, and this is our village’s accountant.”
Guo Dong smiled and stood up to shake hands with Tang Min and the other man, “Hello, Comrades, please have a seat.”
After a few pleasantries, Tang Min brought up the matter of the oil press.
Guo Dong smiled and said, “You came at just the right time. This morning, one of our machines broke down, and we called a technician to repair it. I asked him to repair one of the machines for you while he was at it. You can use it as soon as you take it back. As for the other two, you can find someone to repair them based on this one.”
Yesterday, their family had enjoyed a delicious meal of snake meat. Thinking that they were relatives after all, he had to do what he had promised properly. So, today he asked someone to repair an oil press.
Tang Min was overjoyed, “Thank you so much, Director Guo.”
Song Chu was also very happy. Guo Chun’s Second Older Brother was indeed reliable. With this repaired oil press, she could get things going back in the village.
