Chapter 77: So That’s How It’s Done
Walking out of the Public Security Bureau, Huo Kai extended an invitation to Gu Yue and Song Chu.
“Let’s have dinner together tonight?”
Song Chu, aware that the two men likely had matters to discuss, replied, “I don’t mind.”
A curve appeared on Gu Yue’s lips, “Alright.”
“You two find a place to chat. I’ll go to the machinery factory. If the chick incubator is ready, I’ll have them pull it back with a tractor.” Song Chu was giving the two men some space to be alone.
Huo Kai realized that this female comrade, not only beautiful and capable of fighting, was also intelligent and considerate, “We’ll pick you up for dinner at the machinery factory later.”
Gu Yue also leaned closer to Song Chu, his voice soft and pleasant, “Thank you.”
Song Chu gave him a knowing look, “Work harder in the future.”
Gu Yue chuckled, “Okay.”
Song Chu boarded the tractor driven by a villager and headed to the machinery factory. Gu Yue got into Huo Kai’s jeep.
After getting in the car, Huo Kai smiled meaningfully at Gu Yue, “Xiao Yue, your relationship with this female comrade is quite special!”
“She and I have a cooperative relationship. Don’t get any wrong ideas,” Gu Yue explained with a smile.
Huo Kai raised an eyebrow, “Really just a cooperative relationship?”
Gu Yue didn’t hesitate, nodding, “Yes.”
“Alright.” Huo Kai rarely got to tease his cousin, “But actually, a cooperative relationship can also transform into other kinds of relationships. I think this Xiao Comrade is quite good.”
Gu Yue looked at him helplessly, “Cousin, do you think that in my current situation, I have the energy to think about other things?”
Huo Kai also remembered the Gu family’s situation, reaching out and patting his shoulder, “I heard from Sheng Qingyang that things might improve next year.”
Gu Yue pursed his lips, “Hopefully.”
Huo Kai brought Gu Yue to his office, and the two talked about some of the things that had happened over the past year or so.
Gu Yue gave Huo Kai quite a few suggestions, which the latter took to heart.
Meanwhile, Song Chu went to the machinery factory and directly sought out Director Zhang.
Director Zhang was even more enthusiastic than before, “Comrade Xiao Song, you’re here! I’ve been wanting to contact you, but unfortunately, your village doesn’t have a telephone.”
Song Chu asked with a smile, “Seeing you so happy, Director Zhang, does it mean the chick incubator is finished?”
The lack of a telephone was indeed inconvenient. She planned to install one once the breeding farm was up and running.
Director Zhang nodded, “Indeed. Not only is it finished, we also tested it, and it seems to have the effect Educated Youth Gu described.”
“We’ve put in a bit of extra work and produced three units in total. We’ll keep one here for further testing. How about you take the other two?” he added.
Song Chu beamed, “No problem. It’s truly thanks to you, Director Zhang, that the chick incubator could be produced. You’ve all worked hard recently.”
She knew the machinery factory wanted to keep a finished product. If their side was successful, they would likely use the finished product for promotion.
Director Zhang waved his hand, “It’s no trouble. Serving the people is what we do.”
“Is Educated Youth Gu not here today?” he asked.
Song Chu chuckled softly, “He has something to take care of. He’ll come over when we pick up the second batch of chick incubators next time.”
Director Zhang nodded with satisfaction, “Good. We also want to have more exchanges with Educated Youth Gu.”
Song Chu sat at the machinery factory for a while, waiting until the chick incubators were loaded onto the tractor before leaving.
After instructing the villagers to take the machines back to the village and put them in the oil pressing workshop, she stood not far from the entrance of the machinery factory, waiting.
It didn’t take long for Huo Kai’s jeep to appear before her.
Gu Yue, sitting in the back, proactively opened the car door for Song Chu, “Have you been waiting long?”
Song Chu got in, “No, I just came out.”
Next, the three went to the state-run restaurant for dinner.
Huo Kai led them inside. The restaurant staff were very courteous, appearing quite familiar with him.
After ordering all the available dishes, Huo Kai sat down.
◈◈◈
A thought struck Song Chu, and she asked with a smile, “Comrade Huo, are you very familiar with the people at the state-run restaurant?”
Huo Kai replied, “I know the director of their Logistics Department.”
“That’s good,” Song Chu nodded and smiled.
Huo Kai was momentarily stunned, “What?”
What was the connection between him knowing the Logistics Director and “that’s good”?
Gu Yue, now understanding Song Chu better, immediately guessed what she was thinking.
“Cousin, our village is setting up a breeding farm recently. We might need your help to connect with the state-run restaurant to sell our chicken and duck meat,” he said.
Song Chu realized that Gu Yue not only had high intelligence but also high emotional intelligence. She had just had the thought, and he had already helped her inquire about it. Very impressive.
Huo Kai smiled, “It’s a small matter.”
“But is your village’s breeding farm state-run? If it’s private, they might not dare to buy from you,” he asked further.
Gu Yue nodded, “Collectively owned and state-operated. The approval documents have already been processed.”
“That makes it even easier.” Huo Kai nodded, then suddenly thought of something, “Send some to our Armed Forces Department too.”
Pork was hard to come by now, as were chickens and ducks. If they could buy some, it would improve everyone’s lives.
Gu Yue smiled gently, “No problem.”
Hearing Huo Kai say this, Song Chu guessed that his position in the Armed Forces Department wasn’t low. Having established this connection, things would be even easier to manage in the future.
She subtly gave Gu Yue a “you’re not bad” look, and Gu Yue responded with an exasperated yet amused expression.
Just then, the dishes arrived, so Huo Kai didn’t see their exchange.
After dinner, Huo Kai drove them back to the village.
Since the car couldn’t drive into the village’s small roads, it stopped at the open space by the village entrance.
Huo Kai took out a pack of cigarettes, pulled out two, offered one to Gu Yue, and lit one for himself.
Gu Yue didn’t take it, “I’ve quit.”
Huo Kai realized his cousin had truly changed a lot and didn’t insist, putting the cigarette away, “I wonder if I can go see Grandpa Gu now?”
Gu Yue, seeing many villagers sitting by the village entrance chatting after dinner, said with some difficulty, “It might not be very convenient right now.”
He didn’t want his grandfather to attract too much attention from the villagers, as it could potentially cause trouble.
But he also didn’t want to refuse his cousin’s kindness, “Come when you’re off work in a few days.”
Huo Kai also realized that now wasn’t a good time and sighed, “Oh, alright.”
Seeing their predicament, Song Chu chuckled, “What’s so difficult about this? I’ll help you handle it.”
Both men looked at her simultaneously, “How are you going to do that?”
“Get out of the car and follow me,” Song Chu said, opening the car door first.
Huo Kai was uncertain, so he gave Gu Yue a questioning look.
Gu Yue now trusted Song Chu and nodded at him. The two men got out of the car.
The villagers, seeing that the military officer had driven Song Chu and Gu Yue back, greeted them warmly.
“Chu Chu, where are you going?” a villager asked with a smile.
Song Chu replied with a smile, “Comrade Huo is from the Armed Forces Department. I talked to him about the breeding farm, and he’s somewhat interested.”
“I want to invite their Logistics Department to buy meat from our village in the future, so I’m taking him to see the pigs we’re raising in the pigsty, and then to the cowshed to see the cows.”
“…” Huo Kai was stunned by her actions. So that’s how it’s done. He suddenly felt a bit out of touch.
