Chapter 9: Is It Reliable?
Song Chu’s residual psychic power was still there. She keenly felt the gazes from the villagers and could even hear their conversations.
‘Are you surprised already? There will be more surprises in the future.’
Back at the pigsty, Song’s Eldest Brother was washing the pigs. He was also stunned to see his younger sister return with so much pigweed.
“Little Sister, this is enough for a day. You’re so fast,” he said with a simple smile.
Song Chu said matter-of-factly, “Of course, don’t you know who I am?”
With her strength and skill, if it took her a whole day to cut this much pigweed, she would be too useless.
“…” Song’s Eldest Brother’s mouth twitched. This was indeed his little sister’s style.
“I’ll chop it up and cook it after I finish washing the pigs,” he said, remembering his mother’s instructions before leaving the house that morning not to let his sister get tired.
But Song Chu smiled nonchalantly, “No need, I’ll chop it. You can cook it later.”
Then she went to find a kitchen knife and started chopping the pigweed. She had great strength and was also very fast.
Watching this, Song’s Eldest Brother suddenly felt that his sister had grown up.
Song Chu was chopping pigweed when Tang Min walked in with his hands behind his back.
Seeing Song Chu working, a smile appeared on his serious face.
He had just heard from his wife that his niece had already cut enough pigweed for the day. He found it a little hard to believe, so he came over to take a look since he had some free time.
Unexpectedly, there was indeed a large pile of pigweed on the ground, and his niece was diligently chopping it.
“Eldest Maternal Uncle, is something the matter?” Song Chu looked up and asked with a smile.
Song’s Eldest Brother also stopped what he was doing. “Eldest Maternal Uncle, why are you here?”
“Ahem, I just came to take a look,” Tang Min said. Seeing Song’s Eldest Brother washing the pigs, he asked in confusion, “Why are you washing the pigs?”
“My sister said we need to clean the pigsty and the pigs so they won’t get sick easily,” Song’s Eldest Brother replied truthfully.
This was the first time Tang Min had heard of this. He looked at Song Chu and asked, “Did you read this in a book?”
He had previously thought she was just making excuses.
“Yes, Eldest Maternal Uncle, don’t worry. I guarantee I’ll make my eldest brother raise these pigs to be plump and healthy.”
Song Chu paused and said, “When we see results, Eldest Maternal Uncle can have people catch more piglets to raise. We can set up a pig farm.”
She had observed yesterday and today that the village was relatively poor and backward. Their family was considered to be better off, but many were still eating bran and wild vegetables, and some were even going hungry.
The original host had a big wish, which was to completely change her image in everyone’s minds, so that people would praise her instead of cursing her when she was mentioned.
The principle of the tallest tree attracting the wind is eternal. She did want to completely change her family’s situation, but it would be too unconventional in the village. Most villagers were good, but it’s normal for them to become jealous. Their family might be watched or isolated.
It was still 1975, not yet the era when it was encouraged for some people to get rich first.
Therefore, she thought it would be better to develop the whole village together, so their family wouldn’t stand out too much. Reputation is a double-edged sword, and when used well, it can be a powerful weapon.
Of course, coming to this poor and backward era, she genuinely wanted to make an effort to change the situation. Reform and opening up had not yet begun, so starting from the village was fundamental.
Tang Min didn’t take her words too seriously. It wasn’t that easy to start a pig farm. But to avoid dampening his niece’s enthusiasm, he smiled and encouraged her, “That’s great, Chu Chu. Work hard. If you raise them well, starting a pig farm is not a problem.”
“Eldest Maternal Uncle is the best.” Song Chu could see what he meant, but she would just go to him when she had results.
Tang Min felt relieved to see his niece suddenly become so well-behaved and diligent. He then left with his hands behind his back.
After lunch, Song Chu took a basket and went to deliver food to Gu Yue.
At the Zhiqing Point, the educated youths were also eating. When they saw her, they all took their bowls and went back to their rooms.
Especially Educated Youth Jiang, who hated Song Chu to the core but didn’t dare to provoke her again. She glared at her and quickly turned to go back to her room.
◈◈◈
Song Chu didn’t care about their attitudes. She walked to Gu Yue’s door and knocked.
“Come in,” his clear voice came from inside.
Song Chu then pushed the door open and saw him sitting on the bed reading.
“You’re here,” Gu Yue put down his book.
Song Chu took out the food from the basket. Today’s lunch was simple, just two vegetarian dishes without much oil. She didn’t find it very tasty.
But Gu Yue didn’t mind. He picked up his bowl and started eating, slowly and gracefully. With his handsome face, he made the simple meal look elegant and pleasing to the eye.
Song Chu sighed inwardly. No wonder the original host was so infatuated with this guy. Many village girls and female educated youths secretly liked him too. He was indeed a femme fatale.
After he finished eating, Gu Yue put the bowls and chopsticks in the basket. “I’ve troubled you these past few days.”
“It’s fine, I’m getting paid with your money and coupons anyway,” Song Chu shrugged.
Gu Yue looked at her pointedly and asked, “Did you go to work at the pigsty today?”
“You’re quite well-informed even though you don’t go out,” Song Chu raised an eyebrow.
Gu Yue smiled, “I heard it from the people at the Zhiqing Point.”
They were discussing how unusual Song Chu was today and betting on how many days her diligence would last. He happened to overhear everything.
“Did you go to the pigsty to raise pigs?” he asked again.
Song Chu replied straightforwardly, “Yes, I’ll do your work for these few days. When you’re better, I’ll focus on raising pigs.”
“Why did you suddenly think of raising pigs?” Gu Yue asked with a hint of probing.
‘Is she still not giving up on me? Is she trying to get close to me using a different approach?’
‘But looking into her clear, bright eyes, it doesn’t seem like it.’
“I want to build a pig farm in the village later,” she looked at him with a half-smile, “And aren’t you working at the pigsty? If I don’t spend more time with you, how will I get back the other half of the laboratory?”
‘Don’t tell me this guy thinks I’m still hung up on him?’
Gu Yue, hearing her speak so frankly, put away his suspicions. “You want to start a pig farm? Is it reliable?”
“It’s not that easy to start a pig farm. Not only is it difficult to implement in the village, but also, once there are many pigs, if one gets sick, it could spread to the others.”
“Besides, there’s not enough pigweed on the mountain to feed them all. Every household is barely getting by, so they won’t have extra grain to feed the pigs,” he added after thinking for a moment.
Apart from the brigade’s pigsty, some villagers also raised pigs. The pigweed on the mountain was enough for them, but it definitely wouldn’t be enough for a pig farm.
Also, mainly eating pigweed, the pigs don’t grow very fat. In the long run, it’s not suitable.
Song Chu chuckled, “I’ve considered everything you’ve mentioned. The library in my laboratory has books and materials on scientific pig farming, which I can use.”
“I’ll find a way to solve the pig feed problem before I propose starting a pig farm.” She already had some general ideas, and all that was left was to implement them step by step.
“I don’t know about others, but if I do it, it will definitely be reliable.” She still had this bit of confidence.
Seeing Song Chu radiating self-confidence, Gu Yue was taken aback for a moment, then smiled, “As long as you have a plan.”
“Then you rest. I’m going back. I still have to go to work in the afternoon,” Song Chu stood up and picked up the basket.
“Okay,” Gu Yue nodded.
This is my first time writing this type of story, and it’s been really tough. I only managed to write this one chapter this morning. There will be another update at 3 PM~
