Chapter 94: She’s Not Afraid

The room was relatively small and seemed to have been used for storage, with quite a bit of clutter still inside.

On a wooden bed, Song Ping’s face was covered in bruises, and one of her arms hung limply, clearly showing signs of having been subjected to violence.

“Sister Ping, did Li Dong do this?” Song Chu walked to the bed and carefully examined her.

She found more bruises on her body and a dislocated right shoulder.

Song Ping couldn’t hold back her tears any longer when she saw Song Chu, but due to her weakened state, her sobs were quiet. “It was that beast.”

Song Chu held her close and gently patted her back to comfort her. “It’s okay now, Sister Ping. We’re here.”

“Tell me what happened,” she added.

Song Ping, feeling like she had found her pillar of support, poured out her story.

“For the past year, Li Dong has become fond of drinking. Every time he drinks, he beats me, saying I can’t give him children, that I’m cutting off the Li family line, and that people outside are looking down on him because of it.”

“Then, every time he sobers up, he kneels, says he didn’t mean it, says he was wrong, and begs for my forgiveness.”

“I used to think that because I couldn’t have children, the gossip outside was putting a lot of pressure on him, and that’s why he drank to vent. So, I endured it.”

Song Ping leaned against Song Chu, crying as she spoke, “But a few days ago, my mother-in-law brought home a baby, saying it was Li Dong’s child with a widow in the village, and that I should raise it as my own and tell everyone she found it.”

“That’s betrayal. How could I agree?”

“So I strongly objected. Everyone in the Li family scolded me, saying I have no right to act high and mighty since I can’t have children. They tried to force the child on me.”

“I refused vehemently and wanted to go back to my parents’ home, but the Li family stopped me.”

“The more I thought about it, the more something felt wrong. So I secretly asked a friend who married into this village from the same hometown to go tell my mother about this if I didn’t show up outside for two days.”

“I wouldn’t raise that child, and the Li family actually brought the widow back to feed the baby. Yesterday, I couldn’t take it anymore and started a fight. Who knew Li Dong had been drinking again, and he started hitting me.”

“I couldn’t help but fight back, but I couldn’t beat him, and he dislocated my arm.”

“The Li family was afraid I’d go out and make a scene, and they were even more afraid to let me go back to my parents’ home, so they locked me in this makeshift storage room.”

Song Chu’s eyes were filled with coldness. “Did they not treat your arm?”

“It was too chaotic last night, and they didn’t even notice my arm was dislocated. Today, Second Sister-in-law brought food and saw it. She said she’d ask the village doctor to set it, but I refused.”

Song Ping said through gritted teeth, “I knew you would come to save me. I want to sue him for abuse.”

Over three years of feelings were now completely gone. The softest part of her heart had turned into a cold, hard stone. She would no longer be moved to forgive Li Dong, no matter how much he cried and knelt.

He had pursued her relentlessly for over a year, and she had been moved by his efforts and agreed to marry him.

But now, that past love felt like a joke.

Song Ping was a relatively strong person, so even though she had suffered so much, she didn’t choose to be weak or avoid the situation. Instead, she chose to face it and fight back.

Song Chu admired this. “Good. That kind of man should just get lost, the farther the better.”

“Before coming here, I already asked someone to call the police. When the police arrive, you can accuse Li Dong of domestic violence and having an affair during the marriage, and then file for divorce.”

Back then, Li Dong had taken a fancy to Song Ping, actively pursued her, and showered her with affection. Their feelings gradually grew. When they got married, they heard that people in the county town were all getting marriage certificates, so they went and got one too.

Her cousin Song Ping was tall and beautiful, a capable worker both inside and outside the home. There were many families who wanted her as a daughter-in-law back then.

If it hadn’t been for Li Dong’s persistent pursuit for over a year, showing how much he loved her, her cousin could definitely have married better.

Song Ping thought that if she really got divorced, she wouldn’t have any expectations for love anymore. “If I really get divorced, I don’t want to marry again.”

Song Chu didn’t try to persuade her otherwise. Instead, she said, “Who needs a man? We can have a career.”

“I’ve started a breeding farm, and I’m often too busy to handle everything. So, after you leave the Li family, come and help me.”

She genuinely had this idea. She had been looking for a suitable woman in the village to promote to a secretarial position.

But she hadn’t found anyone in the village. Now, she felt her cousin was very suitable.

What Song Chu had accomplished in Xiaba Village had already spread to nearby villages, and Song Ping had heard about it.

She felt that her cousin was just comforting and helping her. “Am I really capable enough?”

“Of course you are! You graduated from junior high school, you’re diligent and capable, and we’re family. You definitely wouldn’t stab me in the back. I can’t find anyone more suitable than you.”

Song Chu playfully cajoled her, “I don’t care, you have to help me, Cousin. I’ve decided it’s you.”

She also became more determined to sue Li Dong and get a divorce. She had her family’s support. She had a backing. She was not afraid!
