Lu Zhenping didn’t care about his sour expression and continued the conversation with the criminal investigation captain, even subtly flattering him. Everyone in the office knew Lu Zhenping’s unit was about to be reorganized; he would either be transferred to a different location or await new orders. Judging by his current attitude, he likely had already received word of his demobilization.
The people in the office were all calculating, but only Fan Hui was stubbornly upset. He occasionally shot Lu Zhenping a disdainful glare.
The meeting dragged on until eight o’clock, and it was time for a break. Fan Hui, without a word, left the office. As he descended the stairs, a hand suddenly shot out from a storage room, pulling him inside.

After Fan Hui was released, he peered through a broken window at Lu Zhenping, who had been fawning over others moments ago, now looking sternly at him. Fan Hui felt a bit unsettled.

After the meeting resumed, Wei Dong returned with several boxes of food. In front of the leaders, he pushed a box towards Lu Zhenping, and poked at something with a toothpick in his mouth.
“Captain Wei, this is a meeting room. You were gone for so long, and now you return with food. Ugh…and you’ve even had a drink. Is this how your unit maintains discipline? Captain Lu, are you going to let this happen?”
“Hehe, it’s just a meeting, isn’t it? We’re not going on a mission tonight, and the mission briefing isn’t over yet. Besides, Wei Dong and I are on leave. There’s no need for such strict rules. Soldiers and police officers need to eat, too. The food Wei Dong brought is quite a lot, would you like some?”

“This is unacceptable. I will report this.”
Since Lu Zhenping’s insincere behavior was revealed, almost no one took him seriously anymore. Now, seeing him eating in the meeting room, it was clear he was giving up.
Everyone had already made their judgments. He probably knew he wouldn’t be well-treated if he was transferred, so he was acting this way. But he was a high-ranking officer, so he could likely secure a stable job. They heard that Lu’s wife worked at the county bus company, thanks to some connections. Hehe, how ridiculous.
“Is there any chili?”
Wei Dong twitched his mouth, “Of course, I have it. Anything you want. This is for the captain, and my personal favorite dumplings. I watched them being made myself. They are delicious, you can trust me.”

Fan Hui’s heart skipped a beat, and he looked at Wei Dong. The latter gave him a subtle nod. He understood and grabbed the teacup on the table, smashing it on the table. Tea splashed everywhere, some even landing on Lu Zhenping’s hands.

The criminal investigation captain slammed the table and said to Fan Hui, “Captain Lu and the others are here to help us. What are you doing? If you have a problem, go home and vent. Fan Hui, what are you trying to show off? You don’t need to participate in tomorrow’s mission. Go home.”

The meeting finally ended as dawn broke. Suddenly, a soft whistle echoed through the Public Security Bureau.
Lu Zhenping smirked, stretched, and walked out with the others. No one spoke during the walk from the hall to the exit. As they reached the courtyard, just as they were about to part ways, Lu Zhenping extended his hand.
“Wait. From yesterday to today, the leaders have been speaking, and I haven’t said much. Before we part ways, I want to share some good news.”
“What?”
The others yawned and looked at Lu Zhenping with confusion. But before he could speak, two military trucks pulled up. Wei Dong, wearing his uniform and carrying a gun, and Fan Hui, also in uniform, jumped out and approached Lu Zhenping.
“Report, Captain. The target hideout has been destroyed, and the escapees have been apprehended.”
“All women and children have been examined by doctors and are now under guard. Requesting further instructions for the next phase of the operation.”
The criminal investigation captain and the other leaders were momentarily stunned. With a knowing look at them, Lu Zhenping’s smile widened.
“The good news is, everyone will be undergoing a review soon. I’m afraid we can’t continue working together. It’s truly unfortunate!”
