Chapter 90: Wife Has Improved, Yet Still Unsatisfied
Shen Meng had slept for a whole afternoon, and the journey here had been bumpy. Now, she couldn’t sleep, and after all this time, she was a little hungry. She peeked at the man, who looked remarkably energetic, a smile playing on his lips. This made Shen Meng rather annoyed. She was already lying in bed, so what was there to smile about? She wanted to ask him, what was so funny?
“Can’t sleep? Then don’t force yourself. Your body might get numb soon. Should I massage you?”
Shen Meng: “…”
This man… wasn’t he not very fond of the original character’s feelings? Why was he speaking so smoothly?
“What are you smiling at?”
“When did I smile? I feel sorry for you lying there. After all these years of marriage, you’ve been carrying the burden of the household. You’ve worked hard.”
After Lu Zhenping said this, he leaned closer, pulling the covers up a little, and placed his hands on her shoulders. The two were incredibly close, their noses almost touching.
Perhaps due to her illness, Shen Meng reacted slowly. She blinked, then slowly widened her eyes, looking at the magnified face before her. Startled, she reached out to push him away.
Lu Zhenping had been waiting for this moment. He took a step back, his brow furrowed, a hint of hurt in his expression.
“Xiao Meng, what’s wrong? Your eyes don’t seem right. Before, you were always asking me when I’d come home. Why are you pushing me now? We’ve been married for so many years. Are you resentful of me?”
Shen Meng: “…”
What kind of green tea talk is this? The original character was urging you to come home, wasn’t she hoping to follow you to the military camp!
Shen Meng swallowed nervously. Her memories clearly showed a distant relationship between the original character and Lu Zhenping. On their wedding night, the original character had proactively crawled into bed, fearing the man’s frequent absences and lack of attention, determined to control the family finances.
But looking at Lu Zhenping’s actions, could it be that he actually had deep feelings for the original character, feelings she herself wasn’t aware of?
Shen Meng bit her lip, “No, no. Just now, you suddenly got so close, I wasn’t used to it.”
“I see. After being away for so many years, it’s natural to be uncomfortable. Rest now, and I’ll get something to eat.”
Shen Meng nodded, eager for him to leave.
Lu Zhenping smiled, stroking her hair, and walked out.
Shen Meng breathed a sigh of relief, lying back down. But then she sat up abruptly. Something was wrong. Very wrong. Lu Zhenping’s actions – from applying medicine to covering her with the blanket – didn’t seem like the behavior of a husband who’d been married for three years and had been away for long periods.
But she had observed closely. Lu Zhenping’s concern for her was genuine. Shen Meng felt a twinge of anxiety. Lu Zhenping was clearly shrewd, a seasoned soldier, now a deputy regiment commander. He had undoubtedly faced countless cunning enemies.
Shen Meng considered herself somewhat capable in the business world, but she knew nothing about men. She wasn’t a clever person; getting into college required immense effort, and she maintained that diligence even after entering university.
She thought that hard work would lead to the life she desired, but reality had slapped her repeatedly. So many unfamiliar things were overwhelming her soul. Even at university, simple communication with others was challenging.
◈◈◈
She had to absorb knowledge like a sponge, and in her work, she never slacked, fearing dismissal or replacement. There was no time for romance; she didn’t even have time for rest days.
Shen Meng was troubled. She worried about her next few months with Lu Zhenping. After all, they were legally married. If he wanted intimacy, Shen Meng thought, she wasn’t incapable of it. She had taken over the original character’s body; it wouldn’t be fair to reject a man’s advances.
From Lu Zhenping’s perspective, he was innocent.
Shen Meng’s thoughts became muddled. She pulled the covers over her head.
Meanwhile, Lu Zhenping sat on a bench in the hospital corridor, staring off into the distance. A moment later, Qin Hao rushed over, carrying a thermos and a bag of fruit.
“Zhenping, you’re finally back! How’s your wife? Oh, I called your sister-in-law as soon as I got your call. She made you some porridge, and it’s still hot. It needs to cool down a bit before you can eat it.”
Qin Hao hadn’t seen Lu Zhenping in years. He gave him a bear hug, and Lu Zhenping reciprocated. As long-time comrades, they had a lot to catch up on.
“She’s fine. Thanks for your trouble, Qin Ge.”
“Don’t be so formal with me. You’re on leave for a few months, right? Hey, we were in the army together. Many of our comrades are looking forward to catching up with you! Let’s get together sometime.”
Lu Zhenping nodded, glancing towards the ward. “Yes, we should. But it will take some time. I’ll be able to stay home for three or four months, no worries about time.”
The two sat down on the bench. Qin Hao glanced at the ward. He sighed. He’d attended Lu Zhenping’s wedding, and he remembered the bride’s expression. Over the years, he and Lu Chang Hong had met frequently, and he knew that Ming Yang and the other children weren’t doing well. Some of their comrades had given Lu Chang Hong some things to take to the Lu family, even though they knew it wouldn’t make much difference. But no one dared to do what Lu Zhenping did, to confidently say they would take the children back home to raise them.
Every family has its own troubles. It’s truly having more heart than strength!
But recently, he heard that Zhenping’s wife had improved, and the children were going to school. Lu Chang Hong had said so, so it must be true.
“Zhenping, I heard from Chang Hong that your wife is much better now, and she’s been taking good care of Ming Yang and the others. You’re having a good life, so why are you in the hospital?”
Lu Zhenping blinked, looking at Qin Hao. He didn’t answer the question, but asked instead, “Qin Ge, you say people are still the same people, but why do they seem to change so much? Could it be that some spirit has possessed them?”
Qin Hao punched him on the shoulder.
“You, you, why are you so unsatisfied now that your wife has improved? Do you have to wait for her to slap you in the face? This is a strange thing to say. And don’t say things like that anymore. Superstition is bad.”
Lu Zhenping frowned, thinking of some strange dreams. He kept calling Shen Meng’s name, but the scenes were blurry. Several times, he woke up feeling incredulous. Could it be that he had developed deep feelings for his wife without realizing it?
