Chapter 10: Second Uncle Also Has Doubts
Second Uncle, are there really ghosts in this world?
If I still can’t sense that something is wrong, then I’m a true fool, I asked Second Uncle with some trepidation.
The world is small, so small that no matter where you go, you will meet people you don’t want to see, and this world is also very large, so large that one person can only understand a tiny fraction of all the things in this world in their entire life.
Second Uncle did not answer me directly, but indirectly told me that ghosts exist in this world with these words.
Seeing that my state was a little off, Second Uncle said slowly:
You still have a choice. Once you enter this door, there will be no more choices. Choose again, little child, will you follow Second Uncle or go downstairs directly?
I also understood how important this choice was for my future life, and I didn’t know if it was because of what I promised Second Uncle at the restaurant or because of my pride as a human, not wanting Second Uncle to look down on me. I didn’t hesitate for long before nodding firmly.
If ghosts are real, then our Ancestor is real too.
I did not answer Second Uncle directly. Seeing my firm response, Second Uncle inserted the key into the doorknob and turned it a few times. Clearly, the door had been locked by President Lü.
Seeing the door open, Second Uncle went in first. I took a deep breath and followed him.
As soon as I entered, the room was very dark. My first reaction was naturally to look for the light switch, and the light switch is usually designed to be next to the door, which was indeed the case.
As I reached out to press the switch, Second Uncle immediately grabbed my hand that was going to press the light switch and said:
Don’t turn on the light, don’t scare her.
Seeing Second Uncle stop me, I lowered my right hand. The window of the room had been sealed with wooden boards, which I assumed President Lü had done, probably fearing that his daughter would have some kind of reaction. This was quite easy to understand.
President Lü’s daughter was also lying on her side on the bed, with her back to us. She seemed to have heard the movement and slowly sat up, looking at us.
Because it was daytime, the window frame was not sealed so tightly, and the light from outside shone in, just enough to clearly see President Lü’s daughter’s face.
If she were a normal girl, her face would be considered quite pretty, but at this moment, her eyes did not look like human eyes; they were cold and weird, and the corners of her mouth turned up, revealing an extremely strange smile. This made my heart feel uneasy. If Second Uncle hadn’t been in front of me, I would have wanted to turn around and run immediately.
However, due to the insufficient light, it was not very clear. Second Uncle was very calm. I didn’t know if Second Uncle could see clearly. He stood still, staring at the girl for a long time before saying:
Little child, in your three Daoist Books, I think you mentioned one was called Spirit and Ghost Technique, right?
Yes, why, Second Uncle?
Take it out.
I very quietly took three Daoist Books from my shoulder, slightly afraid of startling the girl on the bed. Then I looked towards the girl. Although that girl was smiling weirdly at me and Second Uncle, seeing me make a move, she showed no intention of attacking us.
Seeing that this girl wasn’t showing any anomalies, I picked up the three Daoist Books and searched them under the dim light.
My luck was quite good; the first one was a Spirit and Ghost Technique. I handed the Daoist Book to Second Uncle, and Second Uncle waved his hand and said: 【 Is there anything unusual about the Daoist Book? 】
【 Ah? Uh… 】
Hearing Second Uncle say that, I took the Daoist Book and looked at it, then shook my head and said:
【 No. 】
【 Open the book and look at her again. 】
I naturally did as he said, but there was still no anomaly.
【 It’s not a ghost after all. 】
After Second Uncle finished speaking, he flipped on the light and closed the door. It was only then that I noticed, due to my nervousness when I first entered, that I hadn’t closed the door.
【 Put the Daoist Books away. 】
I obediently did as I was told. After seeing me put the Daoist Books away, Second Uncle said again:
【 Little child, you can’t be careless with this kind of matter. However, you’ve just entered this circle, so you can learn slowly. Try not to make mistakes if you can. 】
After speaking, Second Uncle walked towards the girl. Seeing this, the girl jumped with a “xiu” and crawled on the bed, facing us, assuming an attacking posture. The weird smile on her face had disappeared, replaced by a fierce look. The teeth revealed in her mouth were uneven fangs, not human teeth at all. The teeth visible in her mouth now seemed much longer than a normal person’s.
Naturally, I was startled by the girl’s appearance. Second Uncle, however, was unfazed. He didn’t show any pity for the girl just because she was a girl. Instead, he quickly lunged forward, grabbed the girl by the neck, and lifted her up.
Second Uncle’s action was so fast that neither the girl nor I could react. After lifting the girl, Second Uncle asked her:
【 Can you speak? 】
The girl, lifted by Second Uncle, didn’t answer but struggled fiercely, reaching out her right hand to claw at Second Uncle’s face. It was then that I clearly saw the girl’s fingernails were black and very long, sharp like her teeth.
Second Uncle reacted quickly, giving her a forceful shake and throwing her against the window. Some of the wood sealing the window broke off and fell to the ground. Hearing the sound of the wood falling to the ground, I finally came to my senses.
Second Uncle didn’t give the girl time to react and immediately punched her in the face. I felt the pain just watching. With a single punch, he knocked her unconscious.
Afterward, Second Uncle picked her up and placed her on the bed. He first examined her nails, then pinched her mouth open to look at her teeth, and finally flipped open her eyelids to inspect them.
And I always stood beside Second Uncle, watching him do these things, not daring to disturb him.
Seeing that Second Uncle had finished, I asked:
【 Second Uncle, what is this situation? 】
After spending a long time with someone, one’s behavior begins to resemble theirs. At this moment, I even spoke to Second Uncle as if I were Second Uncle asking him a question.
【Damn it, I thought it was a demon, but the symptoms on this girl don’t seem like a demon.】
Second Uncle cursed, his complexion somewhat dejected, and said to me.
I looked at Second Uncle and asked curiously: 【 What could that be? 】
Second Uncle pondered for a moment and spoke with some uncertainty:
【It’s not a demon, not a ghost, the possibility of it being a demon is even greater.】
【Demon? 】
【Mm, I’m not clear about the specific demon, I only knew it was tricky, but I didn’t expect it to be this tricky. I don’t know if it’s your bad luck or the bad luck of both the uncle and nephew. 】
【 What should we do now? 】
Judging by Second Uncle’s tone, and his furrowed eyebrows, I also knew this was a difficult matter, so I could only ask Second Uncle.
Second Uncle looked at me and sighed. I didn’t understand what he meant, and then Second Uncle said:
【 Little child, you are a novice in this line of work now. Your Second Uncle has traveled far and wide for many years. Although he has experienced much, he has not really encountered many matters related to demons. At most, he has only heard about them. But for your Second Uncle, everything he has heard about things connected to demons has been difficult to handle. This matter is not an easy one for your Second Uncle. Should we get involved in this?】
Although Second Uncle was asking me, I didn’t hear any hesitation in his tone, but I didn’t understand the meaning of his words either, so I directly asked: 【 Second Uncle, what exactly do you mean? Just say it clearly. 】
【 Second Uncle was also unsure about this matter, and it was possible that if it wasn’t handled well later, he might fail.】
I understood what you said, meaning if it’s not handled well, there’s a high possibility of death.
