Ch 236: Procrastination? A Good Scare Usually Keeps It At Bay (for A While)
The good times always pass quickly. Bal hadn’t encountered any major events for two whole weeks since the fishing match.
“Oh, this life is so comfortable. Every day at work, it’s just a cup of tea, a bag of melon seeds, a stack of documents to read all day. If I feel bored, I’ll go to the school and give a half-day lecture. Awesome!”
Bal leaned back in his chair, resting. Recently, things have been very peaceful, and there have been no incidents at the Guild.
“This is the leisurely life I should be enjoying, like a retired cadre.”
Bal was still commenting, when Selena pushed open the door and entered.
“Okay, no more leisure.”
“There’s nothing going on, what’s wrong with letting me rest for a while? Anyway, recently all the Adventurers have gone to exterminate Monsters, even those very strong Adventurers have gone out.”
“It’s not about those issues; I’m talking about this.”
Selena took out a copy of a document and placed it in front of Bal.
“Hmm? What’s wrong?”
“Did you handle this Magic Pet application?”
“Yes.”
“Did you handle it alone?”
“Anda was with me.”
“That’s fine.”
“What’s wrong?”
“There’s a saying in the government: ‘One person acts selfishly, two people act for the public good.’ If you handled this application alone, it would probably be returned by the Council Hall.”
“It’s good that I went with Anda.”
“Okay, remember to ask Anda to add her signature to this, I’ll go and submit the document first.”
“Okay.”
Selena placed the document copy on Bal’s desk and walked out carrying a stack of documents.
“No rush, there’s still time, let me nap for a while.”
Bal closed his eyes and started shirking responsibilities, sleeping.
————
“Kingdom Hero, open your eyes. I’m your Wife, I’m here to deliver your meal.”
A familiar voice reached his ears, Bal opened his eyes, and Phia was sitting on the sofa carrying a basket containing lunch.
“Really, you’re still sleeping at work. If I didn’t come and call you, you wouldn’t get up to eat, right?”
Bal sat next to Phia, and he kissed Phia’s face.
“Didn’t we agree that you would come to deliver my meal? Then it doesn’t matter if I sleep a little.”
“You’ll be lazy to death.”
“You won’t let me be lazy to death.”
Bal was just about to hug Phia and cuddle, when Phia directly stuffed a sandwich into Bal’s mouth.
“Eat your food properly, don’t get your hands on me.”
Bal retracted his hand. He grabbed the sandwich and took a bite.
“Does that mean I can get my hands on you after I finish eating?”
“Don’t even think about it.”
“Haha, just kidding.”
Bal finished the remaining sandwich in his hand, took a sip of the creamy mushroom soup Phia brought, and then picked up another sandwich to eat.
“Who made this sandwich?”
“Me, what’s wrong?”
“You actually added my favorite Smoked Sausage. My Wife is the best!”
“Hmph, of course. I added something else you love, can you guess?”
“Huh? Really?! Let me taste it carefully.”
Bal put the remaining sandwich in his mouth, carefully savoring the ingredients.
“I can’t tell…”
Phia looked at Bal’s dejected look and laughed.
“It’s true that you’re stupid. Didn’t you think the sauce in the sandwich tasted any different?”
“The sourness was less, and the milky flavor was stronger. Did you change the sauce?”
“No, I added more cheese slices, and I pan-fried the Bread with Butter.”
Bal excitedly hugged Phia.
“Woo! Wife, you are truly my Angel! Promise me, don’t become one of those shallow Women.”
“Hilarious, why would you think I would become shallow?”
“Because you’re getting more and more of a Wife’s vibe.”
“What nonsense!”
“In my Memory, several of the very individual Sisters from the Orphanage changed after getting married. So I’m afraid you’ll change too.”
“Hmph, so do you think I’ve changed or not now?”
“You’ve become more of a Wife while being even clingier to me.”
“Hmph, sweet-talking.”
Phia turned her face away. Although she said Bal was sweet-talking, she fell for it.
After eating, Bal hugged Phia and lay on the sofa to take a nap.
“No work this afternoon?”
“Work is never-ending, there’s only urgency and importance, not much else to say. As things stand, let’s have a nap first.”
After saying that, Bal covered himself and Phia with a blanket, and in a short while, the two of them fell asleep. When Bal woke up, he got up quietly and sat in the office chair.
“Let’s go find Anda and get her signature.”
Bal looked at his desk, and the document copy was gone. So Bal began to search for the document copy near his desk.
“Hmm…what are you looking for?”
Phia’s sleep was light when she napped in the Guild Office, she woke up as soon as she heard Bal rummaging through things.
“A document copy, did you see it?”
“No, your desk was quite clean when I entered.”
“What!?”
“What’s wrong?”
Phia looked at the shocked Bal, she was curious about what kind of document it was.
“That’s the document concerning the pet for Philia!”
“Eh?”
After Bal recounted what Selena had told him that morning, Phia also started searching.
“Did you find it?”
Bal thoroughly checked the area around his desk, but still couldn’t find it, so he looked up and asked Phia, who was searching in the filing cabinet.
“No.”
Then the two of them started searching other places in the office, but no matter how much they searched, they couldn’t find the document copy.
“It’s over, it’s over, something’s happened.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll use Magic to search.”
Phia closed her eyes and used Magic to search every corner of the room.
“No, I can’t find it.”
At this time, Selena walked into the office.
“I’m back, did you get Anda’s signature?”
Selena saw Bal lifting the sofa, she rubbed her eyes. After confirming that this goofball was Bal. She started asking.
“What are you doing?”
By now, Bal’s forehead and back were covered in cold sweat.
“You wouldn’t have forgotten to get Anda’s signature, would you?”
“No… not…”
“Then bring the document copy here.”
“That…I lost it…”
“Huh?!”
Selena looked incredibly surprised. After she gathered her thoughts, she started to gasp for breath.
“Why didn’t you lose yourself? I told you to get Anda’s signature, but you lost the document. Wait a minute, you wouldn’t have gone to find Anda’s signature yet, would you?”
“Yes…”
“…6.”
Selena only uttered one word, then she fainted, Bal immediately stepped forward to support her, but no matter how much he called, Selena kept her eyes closed.
“Don’t scare me, I’m a scaredy-cat, Selena? Selena!”
————
“Damn it!”
Bal woke up, he first glanced at the desk, the document copy was still there, then he looked at the Clock, only half an hour had passed since Selena left.
“Scared me to death, it was just a dream.”
Bal picked up the document copy and walked out of the office. He came to Anda.
“Anda, sign it. Selena said that we need both of our signatures for it to be valid.”
“Oh, okay.”
Anda neatly signed her name, then she looked up at Bal.
“I heard you shouting in the office just now, what happened?”
“Nothing, I had a nightmare.”
