Ch 500: That’s Not A Body; I’d Believe You If You Said It Was A Leather Bag Filled With Meat
“Something happened? What happened?”
Bal asked Phia while pinching Xiao Jiu’s face. Seeing Phia’s poor complexion, he felt that this wouldn’t be a small matter.
“The Demon Wolf Tribe man you beat up died, and then everyone in the clinic suddenly fainted.”
“What’s going on?”
“I don’t know. Get ready, let’s go there. Bring Nia along; I need her help with the autopsy.”
“Okay, I’ll go call her now.”
Bal returned Xiao Jiu to Philia. He patted Philia’s head and said gently to her,
“Philia, stay home for now. Something happened in town, and I’m afraid you’ll be implicated.”
“Philia understands. Father and Mommy, please be careful too.”
“Yes, we will.”
Bal first found Hamlet. Hamlet was already registered with the Guild and the Council Hall. It wasn’t suitable for a collar, so the Guild made it a special anklet.
“Hamlet, take this note to Randall and the others. After delivering it, come straight home. Something has happened in town, and I can’t let the children who are at school encounter danger. The parents trust us with their children, and we can’t disappoint them. Go, be careful on the road, and don’t fly too low on your way there or back.”
Bal placed a note on Hamlet’s front paw. Hamlet was sensible; it could tell that Bal wasn’t joking, so it gripped the note and flew out from the backyard. After seeing Hamlet off, Bal went upstairs to call Nia.
“Nia, how are you feeling now?”
Bal knocked on Nia’s door, and she quickly opened it. Her complexion was good; she seemed to have recovered well.
“What’s wrong?”
“When I was arresting someone earlier, I seriously injured someone who resisted arrest. That guy died at the clinic, and now there’s a sudden mass casualty incident at the clinic. Phia needs you to do the autopsy with her.”
“I understand. Let me change my clothes.”
Nia closed the door. After about half an hour, Nia came out again in changed clothes.
“Let’s go.”
“Are you alright?”
“I’ve rested well; otherwise, I wouldn’t be awake now.”
“Alright, you should also be careful.”
Bal took Nia downstairs to find Phia. After Nia met Phia, she went to discuss things with Phia. Seeing this, Bal found Xiaoyue.
“Xiaoyue, if there’s nothing important, family members should avoid going out these two days. A large-scale parasitic creature infection might break out in town. Tell everyone in the family, and don’t go out unnecessarily, even if you’re fine.”
“I understand, Master.”
After instructing Xiaoyue, Bal went to Phia’s side. Phia and Nia had finished talking and were ready to leave.
“Are you both ready?”
Bal looked at the two. Phia nodded. Then, a familiar white light flashed, and the three of them were transported to the clinic where the Demon Wolf Tribe man had been treated. The doctors and nurses in the clinic who could still move were busy treating those who had fainted. Bal stopped a passing nurse.
“Excuse me, I’m sorry to bother you, but where is the body of the seriously injured Demon Wolf Tribe man who was treated at the clinic before? I’ve brought professionals for an autopsy.”
“In the morgue in the basement. You can look for it. I’m very busy right now. I’ll leave it at that.”
After the nurse left carrying a pile of instruments, the group immediately headed towards the morgue in the basement. In order to preserve the bodies, morgues generally keep the temperature relatively low. Phia and Nia, entering the morgue, felt a little cold, and Nia even hugged her tail.
“So cold.”
“Indeed, but we have to find it. Let’s split up.”
The three immediately split up to search. Luckily, the cabinets storing the bodies in the morgue all had time records of when they were put in, and the group quickly found the suddenly deceased Demon Wolf Tribe man.
When they pulled out the cabinet containing the body, what was before them caused them to feel a wave of nausea.
“Ugh, so disgusting. Didn’t they say he died not long ago? Why is it like this?”
Before the three of them was something resembling a humanoid form that was nothing but skin. There were many protrusions under the skin that were wriggling, much like insects that had been drained by spiders. The three of them worked together to dismantle the cabinet. Philia used magic to create an isolated, transparent ice coffin that encased the Demon Wolf Tribe man and the parasitic creatures within his body.
Afterward, Phia and Nia jointly examined the entire morgue. Fortunately, they arrived in time; the parasitic creatures hadn’t had time to spread and reproduce to other bodies. Phia carried out a thorough disinfection of the morgue and then walked to the ice coffin she had created with her magic.
“Sister-in-law, do you thinkโฆ can we still perform an autopsy on this thing?”
Nia looked at the skin sac in front of her. She could see that the Demon Wolf Tribe man’s body had been completely devoured as food by the parasitic creatures, probably leaving only a few bones that hadn’t been digested yet. Performing an autopsy now would reveal nothing about the cause of death, but it would still be useful.
“Even if we can’t perform an autopsy, we need to figure out the parasitic way of these creatures and the countermeasures, otherwise, the people in town will suffer. You wouldn’t want to see someone you know become like this, would you?”
“I really don’t want to, let’s start then.”
“Mm.”
Philia turned to Bal.
“Bal, go check on those who fainted. Record their symptoms and eyewitness accounts. Be quick!”
“Understood.”
Bal left the morgue. Philia turned back to prepare for the dissection. She dissolved the lid of the ice coffin, and then she conjured several ice dissection tools and placed them to the side.
“Nia, take notes.”
“Yes!”
Philia pierced the ice knife into the Demon Wolf Tribe man’s body. His body, which was only a layer of skin, quickly deflated like a deflated balloon. Then Philia began to cut open the man’s abdomen. The abdominal fat layer and muscles were gone. By cutting open the skin, she could see those wriggling parasites. Fortunately, the parasites had temporarily lost their vitality due to the low temperature of the ice coffin. They could only move slowly. Philia took out a parasite and froze it. Even though Nia had experienced even bloodier battles, she still felt sick at this sight.
“Nia, get the bigger knife.”
Nia handed Philia the required tool, enduring the discomfort as she recorded everything before her.
“The flesh and organs are gone. It’s inferred that these parasitic creatures did it. The skeleton is still there, but the spine and ribs show obvious erosion marks, suspected to be the work of these parasites.”
Then Philia opened the Demon Wolf Tribe man’s eyelids. His eyes were still there, but they were filled with bloodshot veins. It seemed that the man had experienced great pain, such as slowly feeling his internal organs being lost before he finally died.
Philia also removed the man’s facial skin and abdominal skin, froze them separately with ice, and then completely decomposed the man’s body and the parasitic creatures into ashes.
“Nia, we’ll study these things here later. Make sure you have protection.”
“Don’t worry, although my body isn’t immune to all poisons like Older Brother’s, it’s still quite strong.”
“We can’t be careless. Quite a few people might die this time.”
“I know.”
