Ch 4: Inflation
Early in the morning, Gu Qingyin got ready and prepared to go find Huo Xingye.
Just a second before she got into the car, her phone, which had been silent for days, suddenly rang.
Gu Qingyin thought that Huo Xingye had finally had a pang of conscience and remembered his lonely old mother, but when she took it out, it was an unfamiliar number.
She raised her eyebrows suspiciously and pressed the answer button.
“Hello?”
There was a moment of silence on the other end, and then a man with a deep voice carefully asked, “Is this Gu Qingyin… Master Gu?”
“It is. Exorcism or feng shui?” Gu Qingyin got into the car and asked as a matter of course.
“It really is you!” The man on the other end was overjoyed. “Master Gu, are you free to come over right now? A child in my friend’s family is possessed by a ghost. Today is the fifth day. Please save her!”
Gu Qingyin was very surprised. “That’s a long time.”
Generally, ghost possession is to manipulate a person into committing suicide, and they leave after achieving their goal. If they haven’t died after five days, either the ghost wants something else, or the child has something special about her.
“Yes, it is.” The man was extremely worried. “The Taoist Masters we found before were either scammers or not skilled enough. They came and went, making a fuss, but it was all useless. The child’s face is like a dead person’s now, more air going out than coming in. We can’t delay any longer!”
Gu Qingyin pondered for two seconds and asked, “Address.”
The man’s tone of surprise was several degrees higher. “I’ll send it to you right now!”
After hanging up, Gu Qingyin had the driver temporarily change course and headed to the Lujiang Villa District.
Lujiang Villa District, a famous gathering place for the wealthy in Haishi.
Gu Qingyin thought to herself that she should be able to earn a lot from this job, enough to fill up her little treasury that she had just emptied.
When they arrived, the car had just stopped when a middle-aged man quickly walked to the car to wait.
Gu Qingyin got out of the car and carefully sized up the person who came. After a few seconds, she opened her mouth in surprise, “Boss Qin?”
No wonder the voice on the phone sounded familiar. It turned out to be Qin Zhen, the owner of the Zhēnpǐn antique shop. Twenty years had passed, and Qin Zhen had aged a lot. She almost didn’t recognize him.
Qin Zhen was also a little dazed when he saw her. He only felt that she was the same as she was twenty years ago. Are all true Taoist Masters so skilled at preserving their youth?
The doubts in his heart flashed by, and he quickly greeted her. “Master Gu, you actually still remember me. A few days ago, my son called and said he saw you. I was still half-believing it. I had no choice but to think of calling and trying.” He was relieved and said with certainty, “With you here, Juanjuan will definitely get better.”
Gu Qingyin shook her head. “It’s been too long. It’s impossible to recover to the original healthy state, and her lifespan will also be affected.”
“Being able to save her life is enough!”
Qin Zhen didn’t dare to ask for too much. The business he did was also related to the Mystical Arts World. Those Taoist Masters who were truly capable were very mysterious, coming and going without a trace. Meeting them all depended on fate.
Being able to invite Gu Qingyin was a complete surprise.
Qin Zhen suppressed his emotions and said slightly to the side, “Let’s go in first.”
Gu Qingyin followed him into the villa. The curtains inside the villa were tightly drawn, and not a single ray of sunlight could be seen. With the door closed, it was even more gloomy and depressing.
Compared to a home, this place was more like a tomb.
“Such heavy ghost energy.” Gu Qingyin looked around and ordered in a light voice, “Open all the curtains.”
Qin Zhen didn’t hesitate at all and strode to the window to open the curtains.
Because Xu Juanjuan was possessed by a ghost, the Xu family’s servants were all given a vacation. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have had to do it himself.
“Stop!” A sharp shout came from upstairs. “Juanjuan can’t stand the sunlight. The curtains can’t be opened.”
Gu Qingyin looked back and saw a middle-aged man in a suit with a haggard expression walking down the stairs quickly. It seemed that this was Qin Zhen’s friend.
“Old Xu!” Qin Zhen said earnestly, “Master Gu said to open them, so there must be her reasons. Besides, it’s gloomy in your house. It’s better to get some sunlight, which can dispel some yin energy.”
Old Xu sized up Gu Qingyin with bloodshot eyes, and the more he looked, the tighter his brows furrowed. He thought to himself, so young and still a woman, how could she look like a Taoist Master? Qin Zhen was probably being scammed.
Old Xu waved his hand. “Xu Chao has gone to the airport to pick up Taoist Liu. He should be home in a little over an hour.”
Qin Zhen was very surprised. “Is it Taoist Liu from Longhu Mountain?”
Old Xu nodded and looked at Gu Qingyin. “Sorry for making you come all this way.” He took out a checkbook from his pocket and skillfully wrote down a string of numbers. “This money is compensation for your wasted trip.”
Gu Qingyin looked down at the check and her heart skipped a beat at the string of zeros on it. She could get money without even doing any work? That wasn’t very appropriate.
Qin Zhen glanced at Gu Qingyin awkwardly and said to Old Xu in a blaming tone, “Why didn’t you say you invited Taoist Liu earlier?”
If he had said so earlier, he wouldn’t have called Gu Qingyin. It was so embarrassing that they had bumped into each other.
Old Xu smiled wryly. “I wasn’t sure if I could invite him.” He saw that Gu Qingyin was not taking the check and frowned, asking, “Do you think it’s too little?”
Gu Qingyin shook her head and turned to look upstairs. “It’s too late.”
“What?”
“That ghost has lost its patience and is about to make a move.” Gu Qingyin looked at Old Xu and asked very bluntly, “You don’t trust me?”
Old Xu was not sure if what she said was true or false, and stared at her without speaking.
Qin Zhen became anxious. “I trust you, I trust you. How could I not trust you? Master Gu, you must save Juanjuan.”
Gu Qingyin gave him a strange look. Why did Qin Zhen seem more anxious than the child’s father?
She didn’t think too much about it and calmly extended a finger. Just as she was about to quote a price, Qin Zhen anxiously interjected, “Ten million? No problem!” He looked at Old Xu. “No problem, right?”
Old Xu still didn’t trust Gu Qingyin very much, but he was afraid that what she said was true and that Juanjuan couldn’t wait for Taoist Liu to come, so he nodded. “As long as you can save my daughter, any amount of money is fine.”
Gu Qingyin pursed her lips and silently retracted her finger. As she walked upstairs, she was still in a state of shock.
She had underestimated the extent of inflation over the past twenty years. She had only wanted one million, but it had suddenly increased tenfold! This trip was really worth it!
She decided! She would use this standard for all future jobs!
Thinking of this, Gu Qingyin turned her head and gave Qin Zhen a grateful glance.
Qin Zhen was at a loss, but now was not the time to ask.
As soon as he stepped onto the second floor, Qin Zhen felt gusts of cold air drilling into his body through his skin. He couldn’t help but shiver, and goosebumps rose in layers.
Old Xu’s feeling was even stronger. Just a few minutes ago, the second floor wasn’t this cold. Because of this, his worries deepened, and he had to admit that Gu Qingyin was right, the ghost was about to make a move.
Gu Qingyin glanced at the two of them and saw that their faces were pale and they were exhaling white air. In addition to the ten million reward, she very generously took out two protective amulets from her satchel and handed one to each of them.
Gu Qingyin had a very good attitude towards customers, especially wealthy customers. She smiled and instructed, “Take it. It’s free, and it can keep you safe.”
When the two heard that it was free, they didn’t care whether it was useful or not and reached out to take it. As soon as the talismans touched their hands, the cold air wrapped around their bodies dissipated, and their faces became a little rosier.
Old Xu’s heart stirred, and he believed in Gu Qingyin’s abilities a little more.
“Are there other people upstairs?”
“Yes, her mother is with her.”
Gu Qingyin clicked her tongue. This was troublesome. No matter what the ghost wanted to do, it would definitely not let go of this ready-made hostage.
“Is your wife wearing anything protective?”
Old Xu shook his head and sighed. “She was originally, but she would feel uncomfortable when she got close to Juanjuan, so my wife took it off.”
Gu Qingyin was speechless for a moment. Madam Xu had lost her mind because she loved her daughter so much.
