Chapter 17: Talent
Flames engulfed the three-story building and spread in all directions, bringing the entire block to a boil.
The fire was fierce.
It was not until dawn that the fire was completely extinguished.
Patrol Headquarters.
A person pushed the door open, sat down opposite Karl, and handed him a steaming cup of latte.
“This incident has had a major impact, even the City Lord has been alerted, so it’s inevitable that I’ll have to ask a few more questions.”
The person’s voice was gentle:
“You don’t have to worry, the course of events has been investigated, and it has nothing to do with you. You should be able to leave soon.”
“Sigh!” Karl sighed:
“Who would have thought that it would turn out to be a Fire Thieves’ den.”
He had been questioned alone several times since returning to Patrol Headquarters and was not surprised by this.
“Yes!”
The person leaned back, half-hidden in the darkness, their cheeks faintly visible under the kerosene lamplight. They asked:
“When Miles died, only you and Dana were there. Did you find anything on him?”
“Or rather, did you find anything? After all, you regained consciousness earlier than Dana.”
Hmm?
Karl frowned and looked up at the person.
Under the dim light, the other person’s features seemed to be covered in a layer of fog, making it impossible to discern them no matter how hard he tried.
After a moment of pondering, Karl said:
“I fainted after firing the hidden arrow. When I woke up again, the fire had already started nearby. I was too busy escaping to search for anything.”
“Is that so?”
The person rested their chin on their hand and said:
“You said Miles had strange abilities, but it seems unreasonable that he was killed by your hidden arrow to the throat.”
“Heh…” Karl chuckled softly:
“I don’t think so.”
Compared to being killed by a hidden arrow, the means that Miles had used were truly incomprehensible.
“Alright!”
The person sighed, sat up straight, took out a book, placed it on the table, and gestured towards Karl:
“Take a look at this book and see if there’s anything wrong with it. If there’s no problem, you can leave.”
“Book?”
Karl looked surprised, then carefully examined the book.
It was a two-finger thick leather-bound book with a tan cover, tied with two dark red threads.
There was a painting on the front cover, but the image was somewhat blurry.
Looking closely, it seemed to be a woman holding a wooden staff. The faint mist surrounding her made her features unclear.
Karl did not open the book but stared at the woman in the painting, lost in thought, his brow unconsciously furrowing.
“Whoosh…”
A breeze blew from somewhere in the enclosed room.
The kerosene lamp flickered, and the woman on the book cover twisted her figure as if coming to life.
“Come!”
“Come here!”
A murmuring voice sounded in his ears.
Karl’s face was blank as the woman on the cover stepped out of the mist in his vision.
As she approached, her features became clearer, even the tiny pores on her cheeks were visible.
But strangely.
He still couldn’t make out her specific features or overall appearance, only seeing her eyes getting closer and closer.
“Rustle…”
The breeze blew through the forest, rustling leaves. Strange sounds came to his ears, and the fresh scent of the wilderness filled his nose.
Wilderness?
Wasn’t he in a room at Patrol Headquarters?
“Hmm!”
Karl’s body trembled, his eyes regained their clarity, and a cold sweat had broken out on his back.
“Crash…”
He pushed the wooden table in front of him and stumbled back frantically.
“Get away!”
“Get away!”
“What is this thing?”
Karl was breathing heavily, his heart pounding. He instinctively wanted to find a handy weapon.
“Clap!”
“Clap, clap!”
The figure opposite him stood up and clapped their hands:
“To be able to break free from the mental influence of the Wizard’s Book, it seems you are a talented person. No wonder you have resistance to the Banshee’s Wail.”
Then they said:
“Come with me!”
✿✿✿
“Go?” Karl hadn’t recovered yet:
“Where to?”
“To where you should be.” The person put away the book and stepped out of the darkness, revealing the appearance of a middle-aged man:
“I forgot to introduce myself, Tim Moulton. You can call me Tim, an intermediate wizard apprentice.”

✿✿✿
A spacious hall, dozens of candlesticks lined up, the candlelight illuminating the entire hall as bright as day.
This was the Yeager family manor.
Dana stood in the middle of the hall with a gloomy expression. She couldn’t remember how long she had been standing there, only that her legs had gone numb.
“Crash…”
The sound of porcelain shattering came from the inner hall.
“I shouldn’t have let her be a Patrol Chief in the first place. After all the effort we put in, look at the mess she’s caused.”
“What’s the use of saying that now?”
“Of course it’s useful. If you had listened to me, we wouldn’t be in this trouble now.”
“Alright, alright.”
“…”
“Damn it!”
A sharp female voice was full of resentment:
“Wasting the family’s resources, unable to accomplish anything. She might as well marry a man and get out of our sight.”
“That’s enough.” A man’s voice deepened:
“She’s still my daughter.”
“Hmph!”
“Clatter…”
When the chaos subsided, a tired-looking man walked out slowly.
“Father!”
“Sigh!”
Saxon Yeager waved his hand:
“Don’t just stand there, sit down and talk.”
“Father.” Dana’s face was tense:
“I was investigating the Vampire Corpse Case and traced it there. If we hadn’t eliminated those Fire Thieves, they might have caused even bigger trouble.”
“You have a point.” Viscount Saxon didn’t deny it, but added:
“But three patrol officers and seven civilians died in this operation, and more than a dozen houses were affected.”
“These are all your responsibility.”
Dana hung her head, unable to refute.
“The civilians don’t matter, they’re dead, we can just compensate them with money.” Viscount Saxon sighed:
“But those three patrol officers all have backgrounds. Their elders have already made a fuss at the City Lord’s Mansion, and I can’t really say anything.”
“Punishment for you is inevitable.”
“Father!” Dana’s voice rose.
“You are my daughter, I will definitely help you.” Viscount Saxon raised his hand, interrupting her:
“It’s precisely because you are my daughter that I don’t want you to take risks. If something happens to you, how am I supposed to explain it to your deceased mother?”
Dana’s eyes reddened.
“Remember.”
Viscount Saxon admonished:
“Don’t be so reckless in the future, and don’t make your family worry.”
“Yes.”
Dana slowly lowered her head.
“I know you are eager to make achievements to get a Life Potion and be promoted to Knight.” Viscount Saxon continued:
“But you were too impulsive this time.”
This operation not only wouldn’t receive praise from her superiors, but she would also inevitably be punished. It was undoubtedly a failure.
Dana was young to be the South City Patrol Chief. It wasn’t just her own strength, but also her family background.
If she didn’t handle things well, her family would also be implicated.
“And that Karl.” Viscount Saxon said:
“Although he’s not very capable, he is a noble after all. He’s accusing you of framing a noble for your own gain. Find a way to appease him.”
?
Dana opened her mouth, wanting to speak but stopping. She knew she was in the wrong.
“In a few days, your cousin Will will come to Signo City to visit. Take a few days off and accompany him.”
Seeing his daughter’s displeasure, Viscount Saxon’s voice deepened:
“This is an order!”
“You must go!”
“Yes.” Dana nodded helplessly.
