Chapter 23: Appraisal
Day off.
Karl called a carriage to go to the manor outside the city.
Regarding meditation and witchcraft, he had accumulated many questions during this time and urgently needed an experienced person to answer them. After all, knowledge did not only come from books.
Unlike the previous two times, today, Adolf’s manor was crowded with carriages and people, very lively.
“You came at the wrong time.”
Sybil came out to greet him and explained:
“There is a gathering of wizards being held in the Black Swamp. Master went there yesterday.”
She then pointed to the busy crowd:
“They will bring their goods and head there in the next few days.”
“Black Swamp?” Karl had seen this area on the kingdom map, about five hundred miles north of Signo City. He couldn’t help but wonder:
“Is there anyone living there?”
The Black Swamp, as its name suggested, was a vast area the size of a city-state, filled with all kinds of dangerous swamps.
There was also miasma that corroded flesh and blood.
Not to mention humans, even plants and animals were very scarce. It was a veritable forbidden zone for living beings.
“Ordinary people naturally cannot survive in that kind of environment, but wizards can.” Sybil said:
“Grey-Robed Wizard Addison lives in the Black Swamp. He is a full-fledged wizard.”
“Every once in a while, wizard apprentices from all over the Gando Kingdom gather there to exchange knowledge and materials.”
“Exchange.” Karl’s heart stirred:
“Can you learn witchcraft there?”
“Of course, as long as you have enough magic stones.” Sybil turned around with a serious expression:
“Also, you have to come back alive.”
“Huh?” Karl frowned:
“Is it very dangerous there?”
“Of course.” Sybil nodded:
“The world of wizards is always full of risks.”
“Not only are there all kinds of dangerous creatures, but there are also fellow wizard apprentices. For the sake of a spell or a magic item, it’s not uncommon for fathers and sons to kill each other, let alone strangers with no connection.”
Karl’s expression changed slightly.
If people knew that he had cultivated witchcraft in such a short time, would it also attract others’ covetousness?
How could he explain to others that he could construct complex spell models even though he hadn’t even started learning meditation?
He couldn’t tell them!
What if Adolf had evil intentions? He had no ability to resist.
‘I originally planned to reveal my talent a little to attract attention, but now it seems it’s better to be careful. It’s always right to be cautious.’
“But you really have a lot of patience.”
After entering the living room and sitting down, Sybil waved her hand to let the servants leave and said:
“People who have just come into contact with the wizarding world are often curious about it and have all sorts of questions.”
“You’ve learned meditation, but this is only the second time you’ve come here after all this time.”
“I was afraid of disturbing Master.” Karl smiled awkwardly:
“Also…”
“I also need to save money. I’m just a declining noble, and Master’s tuition is a bit expensive for me.”
Asking questions also cost money.
Adolf had corresponding witchcraft classes, each class lasting half an hour, and the fee was one gold coin.
He would explain witchcraft and answer questions in class.
In the world of wizards, any knowledge came with a price, and it wasn’t cheap.
“That’s true.”
Sybil nodded and said with a smile:
“Why don’t you ask me? My hourly rate is only half of Master’s, and I can answer basic questions.”
“Is that okay?” Karl’s eyes lit up.
Most of the questions he wanted to ask were about basic knowledge and common sense in the wizarding world. It didn’t matter who he asked.
“No problem.” Sybil said:
“I believe Master won’t mind.”
She was Adolf’s adopted daughter, not an outsider. However, Karl still had a question:
“Are all wizards short of money?”
“Of course.”
Sybil sighed:
“Especially those of us who do potion research. All kinds of witchcraft materials and knowledge require money. After all, not every wizard apprentice is like Robert.”
“Robert?” Karl said:
“Doctor Robert?”
The doctor who could increase a man’s size by a few centimeters.
He was actually a wizard apprentice?
But on second thought, it was actually quite normal. After all, only witchcraft could have such a magical ability.
“It’s him.” Sybil rested her chin in her hand:
“Although Robert is only an intermediate wizard apprentice, he has mastered a unique witchcraft, which is said to be related to flesh and blood.”
“This makes his wealth even surpass Master’s. It’s really enviable.”
Uh…
✿✿✿
Karl smiled awkwardly, not knowing if Sybil knew what Robert’s witchcraft specifically referred to.
He immediately changed the subject:
“Let’s start the class.”
In class.
Sybil looked at Karl in surprise.
“Your understanding of meditation and the Minor Force Field is very deep. It’s hard to imagine that you’ve only been in contact with witchcraft for a short time.”
“What a pity!”
She sighed with regret:
“I originally wanted to earn more tuition fees from you, but now it seems that this plan won’t work. After a few more classes, I’m afraid you won’t need to come to me anymore.”
“The Morning Sun closes a door, but it also opens a window.” Karl said:
“Perhaps it’s precisely because my talent for cultivation is not enough that I can understand witchcraft so quickly.”
“That’s interesting.” Sybil laughed:
“Unfortunately, the truth is that if the Morning Sun closes your door, it will also randomly seal the windows.”
“Um…”
“Don’t be surprised. Most wizards are pan-religious, that’s why I’m joking about the Morning Sun.”
Karl put away his expression, indicating understanding.
For wizards who pursued knowledge and truth, it was undoubtedly impossible to devote themselves wholeheartedly to a single deity. The fact that the Church allowed these ‘heretics’ to exist also showed the strength of the wizards.
“Senior Sister.”
He said:
“This time, besides wanting to hear Master explain witchcraft, I also have some things I want him to take a look at.”
“Master is not here, can you help me appraise them?”
“Of course.” Sybil puffed out her chest:
“As a pharmacist, appraising unknown items is a basic skill, but you also know…”
She made a common gesture.
Karl indicated understanding:
“Knowledge requires payment.”
“That’s right!”
“How much?”
“Considering that you are my junior brother, and it’s your first appraisal, I’ll charge you two class hours this time.” Sybil said:
“Is that okay?”
Two class hours, which was one gold coin.
Karl breathed a sigh of relief:
“No problem.”
He could still afford this amount of money.
He then opened the package he had brought and took out the items inside, placing them on the table.
“Eh?”
Sybil subconsciously picked up a piece of blackstone, and then her face showed regret:
“I thought it was a magic stone…”
“Where did you get this kind of ore? It contains some Yin attribute and can be used to refine weapons and armor. It’s considered a good ore material.”
“My grandfather went to the battlefield and obtained some spoils of war. He piled up some things in the warehouse because he didn’t know what they were.” Karl explained:
“So you brought them to have a look.”
“Yes.”
Sybil was just asking casually. After putting down the blackstone, she picked up the tail of an unknown beast.
“This is the tail of an Ash Rat. It tastes similar to grass roots and is one of the materials for making Rage Potion. Collecting a hundred of them can be exchanged for one magic stone.”
“Gloom Spider silk, it is said that it can be used to make invisibility cloaks, but this amount is too small, it’s worthless.”
“…”
“Eh!”
Sybil picked up some powder, looked at it carefully, and her expression gradually became excited.
“Necromantic Dust, this is good stuff!”
