Chapter 49: The Forgotten City

Pit Number Two.

Dense Yin Energy converged into black smoke that shot straight up to the sky, one end connecting to the heavens, the other to the depths of the earth.

The Yin Energy howled, sweeping across the surroundings.

Three figures clad in heavy armor stood at the edge, their bodies emitting a faint halo, resisting the erosion of Yin Energy. They remained motionless even as the fierce wind buffeted their forms.

They were the pillars of the City Guard, the nominal rulers of Black City, the knight captains of the City Guard.

Through the thick Yin Energy, one could see a ruined city at the bottom of the pit.

The city was like a giant beast lying dormant underground. Though wounded and aged, it was still as majestic and imposing as it once was.

“The Forgotten City.”

Hall, the City Guard Captain, murmured,

“I can’t believe there really is a Forgotten City here.”

“Legend has it that before the Moon Goddess fell, there were many cities in this world built specifically for her worship.” Squad Leader Barnard added,

“The city contained endless treasures and infinite knowledge. As long as you received the god’s permission here, you could step into the Divine Realm and gain eternal life.”

His voice was filled with envy.

“Humph!”

Hall snorted,

“Even gods can fall, how can there be eternal life?”

“But the Forgotten City must hold many treasures, so we can’t miss it no matter what.”

He then waved his hand,

“Bring the people in!”

“Yes.”

The squad leader responded and gestured behind him. Immediately, over a hundred ragged miners were herded in.

“Move!”

“Hurry up!”

“Crack!”

A group of fully armed City Guard soldiers wielded whips, lashing and driving the miners forward.

In the blink of an eye,

the helpless miners stepped into the black smoke where Yin Energy converged. The Yin Energy instinctively pounced on them, followed by screams of agony and despair.

Visible to the naked eye,

the miners’ flesh began to wither, their eyes turned crimson, and the vitality of life drained away, replaced by a fierce and malevolent aura.

“Release!”

Captain Hall, his face grim, waved his hand slightly.

“Twang!”

“Whoosh…”

Bowstrings thrummed behind them, and countless flaming arrows rained down from the sky, falling into the crowd of miners.

Then,

a raging fire engulfed the entire area.

The miners screamed and fell one after another, eventually turning to ash under the flames. The ashes scattered with the Yin wind, disappearing completely.

If one observed carefully, they could see that the black smoke formed by the Yin wind had become slightly dimmer.

The city within became clearer.

“Not enough.”

Hall said with an expressionless face,

“Far from enough!”

“Captain,” Squad Leader Barnard whispered,

“We don’t have many miners left. If we continue like this, I’m afraid it will cause resentment among the people below.”

“Resentment?” Hall’s eyes flashed with disdain, but he didn’t insist,

“When will the slaves arrive?”

“Madam Butterfly said it would take two months. We need a large quantity, so it takes time to purchase them. We can’t speed up the process.” Barnard replied.

“One month!”

Hall said in a muffled voice,

“Tell her I want to see enough slaves within a month. As for the price… we can raise it.”

“Yes.”

Barnard nodded and added,

“One more thing. A few days ago, some strange giant spirits escaped from the Forgotten City. I’m afraid they will cause some trouble for the people above.”

“Should we take care of them?”

“No need.” Hall lowered his eyebrows,

“If they can’t even handle this, what use are they?”

“Also…”

“Send down those who meet the requirements. The stronger they are, the more Yin Energy they consume, and the sooner we can enter the Forgotten City.”

“Yes.” Barnard responded.

As they spoke, they had already decided on various major matters in Black City. It seemed that Hall was the City Lord, or perhaps the so-called ‘Mysterious City Lord’ didn’t exist at all.

Everyone had a clear division of labor.

Aya’s group of six took turns scouting ahead and attracting targets, while Karl, as the main damage dealer, stood in the middle of the group, ready to provide support at any time.

They started their sweep from the area near their stronghold, gradually moving deeper into the city.

“Be careful!”

As they moved forward, Dana’s eyes narrowed,

“It’s a pack of Earth Wolves!”

Once Earth Wolves formed a pack, there were at least four or more, including a larger alpha wolf.

“Slowly retreat, don’t panic.”

Little Nan’s injuries had almost healed. He held his shield and slowly retreated.

The pack of wolves in the corner of the ruins whined and stopped devouring flesh, turning their gaze towards them.

Their cold, cruel, green eyes were especially noticeable in the darkness.

“Awooo!”

With a howl, three Earth Wolves took the lead and charged.

Two other Earth Wolves hid in the darkness, flanking their front, attempting to attack from the sides.

These Earth Wolves actually understood some tactics.

“Retreat!”

Little Nan shouted,

“Lure them back.”

“Hausman, hold your shield tight, don’t think about attacking, just lure them out.”

The three of them, each holding a shield, backed up slowly, their backs against each other, using their shields to protect themselves.

From afar, they looked like they were encased in a giant turtle shell. The ordinary Earth Wolves’ charges were far from enough to break through their defenses.

The alpha wolf growled, seemingly impatient. It darted out from the darkness and slammed into Dana’s shield.

The immense impact force made Dana groan, her hands holding the shield went numb, almost losing all feeling.

Several arrows shot towards the pack of wolves.

Two fireballs were mixed in, heading straight for the alpha wolf.

“Thud!”

The arrows pierced into the Earth Wolves’ bodies.

“Boom!”

The fireballs exploded, sending the alpha wolf flying. The flames engulfed the Earth Wolves protecting the alpha wolf.

“Attack!”

Karl waved his hand and charged towards the struggling alpha wolf with his sword.

Minor Force Field!

Eagle Stance!

Fury Strike!

Even when hunting a rabbit, a lion uses all its strength. Karl didn’t dare to be careless. He swung his broadsword fiercely at the alpha wolf.

Slash!

Slash!

Gale Slash!

The whistling sword shadows swept past, the sound of blades cutting through bones echoed continuously. The alpha wolf was sent flying again.

It landed lifeless.

The other side also ended quickly. Aya’s group surrounded the injured wolves, greeting them with arrows and heavy axes.

Soon, the pack of wolves turned into a pile of corpses.

Aya skillfully dissected the corpses,

“Come and see this!”

“What’s wrong?”

Aya stopped what she was doing and walked over with Karl.

They saw several mangled corpses in the corner of the ruins. The wolves had probably been devouring these corpses.

“Hmm…”

Karl crouched down and examined the shattered corpses, his face grave,

“The clothes have cuts made by sharp blades. They weren’t killed by wolves, but by humans.”

“No wonder!”

Dana patted her forehead,

“No wonder there’s nothing valuable left. They were looted.”

Having seen countless killings in Black City, they weren’t surprised. There were plenty of people blinded by greed.

“Let’s go.”

Karl stood up,

“Good things inevitably attract attention, but we have strength in numbers. I believe no one would be foolish enough to provoke us.”

Hearing this, everyone couldn’t help but smile.

With their group of seven, plus Karl, the ‘great expert,’ they wouldn’t be the ones looking for trouble.
