Chapter 5: Uncle
“Uncle!”
Karl pushed open the door and walked out of the room, greeting the portly Giles with his narrowed eyes.
His gaze then fell on the young girl beside him, his voice softening slightly:
“Yvonne, you’ve come too.”
“Cousin.”
Cousin Yvonne was as shy as ever.
Today, she was dressed in a gorgeous gown, adorned with lace, bows, satin flower ribbons, and the like. Although beautiful, it was a bit too flamboyant and not suitable for a young girl in her teens.
Jenny, the landlord’s daughter, was also present, chatting with the father and daughter. Seeing him emerge, she hurriedly excused herself and returned to her room.
“Karl.”
Giles took a step forward, grasping Karl’s hands with some excitement, a few tears welling up in his small eyes:
“I heard about your father. It’s truly unexpected… Let the past be the past!”
“Did you go to inherit the title today?”
“Yes.” Karl said with an impassive face:
“Uncle’s news is truly timely.”
It had been a while since his father passed away. The other party hadn’t come sooner or later, but chose this particular time.
How…
Timely!
“Hehe…” Giles chuckled dryly, rubbing his hands together as he said:
“Karl, there’s something I’m not sure if you’re aware of. Your father mentioned your marriage to me before.”
“He wanted you to marry Yvonne. I agreed at the time.”
As he spoke, he nudged Yvonne, who was blushing with shyness in her eyes, signaling her to say something.
“Cousin Karl.”
Yvonne lowered her head, her fingers twirling the gauze of her skirt, her voice barely audible.
“That’s just her personality.” Giles said with a smile:
“You know that, Karl. But it’s alright. Once you’re married and get to know each other better, it’ll be fine.”
“Uncle!”
Karl frowned, finally understanding why Yvonne was dressed so extravagantly. It turned out to be a marriage proposal. He then said:
“I did go to apply for the inheritance of the title today. However, I didn’t receive approval from the priest.”
“Hmm?”
“Ah!”
Sounds of surprise arose.
One was worried, the other was astonished.
“Didn’t receive approval?” Giles subconsciously pulled his daughter back, his small eyes flickering:
“Why?”
Although the barony among the ‘duke, marquis, earl, viscount, baron’ titles didn’t have a legal inheritance system, it had always been passed down from father to son for centuries.
Unless there was some special reason.
If Karl wasn’t a baron, he couldn’t possibly marry off his daughter, whom he had raised for so many years.
“That’s why I was looking for you, Uncle.”
Karl took a deep breath, putting on an anxious expression:
“The priest requires thirty gold coins to prove the Bergman family’s piety to the gods. I don’t have that much on hand. I wonder if Uncle could lend me some?”
“Ah!”
At the mention of borrowing money, Giles’ face changed drastically. He pulled his daughter back another step and casually asked:
“How much do you want to borrow?”
“I only have one gold coin on me.” Karl said with a wry smile:
“The rest would have to rely on Uncle. But Uncle, please rest assured, once I inherit the barony and earn money, I will definitely repay you.”
“Twenty-nine gold coins!” Giles jumped up in anger, pointing at Karl and yelling:
“I would be crazy to lend you that much!”
“You won’t lend it?” Karl’s face darkened:
“Without the money, I can’t inherit the title. Without the title, I’m afraid I won’t be able to arrange the wedding with my cousin.”
“Hmph!” Giles snorted coldly:
“No money, no title, and you still want to marry my daughter?”
“Well…”
His eyes flickered, and he suddenly said:
“But if you want money, it’s not entirely impossible.”
Hmm?
Karl raised an eyebrow.
He knew his uncle’s character very well. His stinginess was comparable to that of Grandet. The fact that he didn’t scare him away this time and even loosened his stance was completely unexpected.
“Karl.”
Giles leaned closer, whispering:
“You have no money, and you can’t obtain the barony. Instead of wasting it, why not sell the title to me?”
“Uncle!”
Karl was speechless:
“Can titles be bought and sold?”
✿✿✿
“Why not?” Giles’ voice rose:
“I’ll offer fifty… forty gold coins. Use thirty of them to buy the title, and the rest will be yours.”
“The rest?” Karl sneered:
“My dear uncle, you’re actually willing to give me the remaining ten gold coins. How generous of you.”
“Of course.” Giles laughed:
“You inherit the title first, then marry Yvonne. After the marriage, transfer the title to my daughter.”
“And finally, transfer it to me.”
Karl was stunned.
You have to admit…
This actually had a certain feasibility.
The Kingdom of Gando had no shortage of queens, and many women had been granted titles. Daughters, wives, and even parents could inherit titles.
“Heh…”
Karl shook his head with a wry smile, a sense of helplessness washing over him.
Dealing with his uncle was even more exhausting than dealing with half-dead creatures.
“You can leave. I won’t sell the title.”
“Don’t be like that!” Giles hurriedly said:
“If you think the price is not right, we can negotiate. If forty coins won’t do, then fifty.”
“Get out!”
Karl suddenly roared.
The thunderous roar rang in his ears, causing Giles to stumble back. When he saw Karl’s ferocious expression, his heart skipped a beat.
The scars from the fire, contorted by anger, looked like centipedes writhing on his face, making his heart race.
His robust physique gave off an invisible sense of oppression.
“Fine, fine, why are you yelling!”
Taking a step back, Giles didn’t dare to meet Karl’s eyes. He pulled the reluctant Yvonne and walked out, muttering under his breath:
“You have the same temper as your father. You can’t inherit the title. I’d like to see how you’ll live in the future!”
“…”
Karl’s face remained gloomy until the outer door closed and Giles’ figure was no longer visible. He let out a long sigh of relief.
“Creak…”
The side door opened a crack, revealing Jenny’s worried expression:
“Karl, are… are you alright?”
“I’m fine.”
Karl shook his head, calming his emotions:
“I might have to go out again today. If anyone comes looking for me, just refuse them.”
“Okay.”
Jenny nodded, opening her mouth to ask something, but ultimately didn’t say anything.
He didn’t inherit the title?
Then what about Karl’s life in the future?

Walking onto the street, Karl was about to hail a carriage when he saw a familiar figure rushing towards him.
“Yvonne?”
“Cousin Karl.”
Yvonne’s forehead was covered in sweat, she was panting, and her skirt was stained with mud. She had obviously come in a great hurry.
She glanced back, then stuffed a jade pendant into Karl’s hand, whispering:
“I don’t have anything else. This was a birthday gift from my father. I heard it’s worth a lot of money.”
“Yvonne.” Karl was taken aback:
“There’s no need…”
“I have to go. I can’t let my father find out.” Before he could finish, Yvonne waved her hand hurriedly:
“Cousin Karl, see you next time.”
She must have sneaked back. After giving him the gift, she turned and left.
Watching Yvonne leave, Karl shook his head slightly. Her sentiment was precious, but the item wasn’t worth much.
Giles was stingy even towards his own daughter.
The jade pendant in his hand was not only made of inferior jade, but the carving was also very rough, like a practice piece.
Wiping the dust off it, Karl carefully tucked the jade pendant into his pocket and hailed a carriage.
“To Rouen Street!”
“Four pennies.”
