Chapter 60: Underground
“Since you’re already here, why are you in such a hurry to leave?”
A figure slowly approached from the darkness.
The newcomer was clad in armor, every inch of his body covered in iron plates forged from fine steel, except for his cheeks.
He was like a heavy iron man!
This armor weighed no less than tens of catties, and with the weight of the human body itself, it was a total of two to three hundred catties.
Yet, as the other party walked, he looked no different from an ordinary person, even seeming more agile.
“Not bad. ”
Looking at Karl, he nodded, his voice laced with satisfaction:
“Abundant Life Force, you’ve reached the limit of an Advanced Knight. No wonder you desire the Life Potion. The people sent down this time are finally somewhat decent.”
“Captain Barnard!” Little Nan recognized the other party and hurriedly said:
“We’re here to exchange for supplies, what are you doing?”
“Crack!”
Before he could finish speaking, a whip lashed out from the darkness, knocking him straight to the ground.
The soldier retracted his soft whip and snorted coldly:
“Did anyone give you permission to speak?”
Karl’s face darkened, his eyes quickly sweeping across the scene.
Thirteen soldiers, most in half-plate armor. To serve in the City Guard, even if they weren’t Knight Squires, their strength wouldn’t be weak.
Four black hounds.
These were fierce beasts trained by the City Guard.
Their size was comparable to a leopard, their fur as hard as needles, with astonishing strength and speed, and a ferocious nature. A few of them could besiege a Formal Knight.
And…
Captain Barnard.
He was a knight, and had been a Formal Knight for many years.
Suddenly surrounded by heavily armed soldiers, even with his strength, he was powerless to resist, his eyelids twitching uncontrollably.
The City Guard…
Not only were they refusing to provide supplies, but judging by the current situation, they were even planning to forcibly detain those who came to exchange for them!
“Take them away.”
Barnard waved his hand:
“Karl, is it? If you survive, you can apply to join the City Guard. Life Potions, all you can drink.”
“Clank… ”
A group of soldiers surrounded them, one of them pointing forward with a spear:
“Move!”
“What are you trying to do?” Little Nan struggled to his feet, roaring indignantly once more.
“Crack!”
The soft whip lashed out.
“Move when you’re told, what’s with all the nonsense?”
Karl stepped forward to help Little Nan up, shaking his head to signal him not to resist for now. They walked forward along the passage.
Strangely, the City Guard didn’t confiscate the weapons in their hands, nor did they intend to search them, merely urging them forward.
“Old Lev.”
Leon, with his Shadow Rune, saw the night as if it were day, and was even more familiar with the layout of the underground tunnels. He spoke in a low voice:
“This is the direction of Pit Number Two.”
“Crack!”
In the darkness, the long whip lashed out again with precision, striking Leon’s back, accompanied by a cold reprimand.
“Don’t speak!”
“Ugh!”
Leon groaned, beads of sweat appearing on his forehead.
Pit Number Two?
Karl’s heart stirred. The recent unrest in Black City was due to the Yin Energy eruption in Pit Number Two. Could their detention have something to do with this?
The mine tunnel was pitch black, and only the figures ahead could be vaguely discerned.
Every certain distance, a torch was inserted into the stone wall, illuminating an area and indicating the path.
Thanks to his powerful mental strength, Karl could remember the path he had taken even with his eyes closed.
‘Seven changes in direction, passed by three occupied caves, one of which contained various supplies.’
‘Two to three guards at every intersection.’
‘What is the City Guard up to?’
“We’re here!”
The soldier’s voice rose, shoving the three of them into an open area. Dozens of busy miners came into view.
“Clang… ”
“Bang!”
The miners wielded iron picks, striking at the walls, occasionally sending sparks flying. Some were squatting on the ground, resting.
Seeing the three of them enter, they all cast their gazes upon them.
“More people?”
“Let them go in and scout first!”
“I wonder how long this batch will last?”
“…”
The miners whispered amongst themselves, their eyes filled with indifference as they looked at Karl and the other two, as if they were looking at dead men.
“What you need to do is very simple.”
The soldier leading the way shouted:
“Scout the path, dig tunnels!”
He pointed towards the narrow passage ahead:
“You can leave when you reach the end.”
As expected!
They were going to use him as a miner.
No!
Not a miner.
But a mine slave!
The passage was narrow, in some places only allowing one person to pass at a time, while in other places it was much wider.
However, it was precisely the widest places that were the most dangerous.
Leon held the torch high to illuminate the path, Little Nan walked at the front with his shield in both hands, and Karl followed closely behind.
“Just letting us scout the path like this?”
Little Nan muttered:
“Not even telling us what dangers there might be!”
“Be careful.”
Karl’s eyelids twitched, his broadsword striking out from the side, pinning something to the stone wall with a sharp whistling sound.
After cultivating the Giant Spirit Breathing Technique, the keen senses brought by the Venomous Wolf Breathing Technique didn’t disappear, but were instead enhanced.
Or rather…
The Giant Spirit Breathing Technique enhanced all aspects of his body, including his perception of danger.
“Black lizard?”
Little Nan looked at the corpse on the stone wall, his face darkening:
“It’s actually this thing!”
“Old Lev.” Leon explained:
“The black lizard is a venomous insect. Although it’s not very strong, it’s highly poisonous. Once its tongue touches you, even a knight will suffer. Without an antidote, death is certain.”
“Hmm.”
Karl nodded:
“Let’s go slowly, no need to rush.”
“Yes.”
Little Nan swallowed, cautiously continuing forward.
Behind the three of them.
“Interesting.”
A figure holding a large machete narrowed his eyes at Karl:
“This guy is very strong. The speed of his sword strike just now was almost as fast as a Formal Knight’s.”
“Yes.”
A burly woman with a scar on her face nodded:
“Another expert. The path ahead will be safer now.”
“Hmph!”
Someone snorted:
“What good is being strong? He’s still being driven around like a dog by the City Guard. In the end, he’ll die all the same!”
Silence fell over the group.
Helpless expressions appeared in their eyes.
“Dying later is better than dying sooner. Live one day at a time. If you’re tired of living, you can go and resist the City Guard.”
Someone spoke disdainfully:
“If you dare, I’ll admire you!”
“Clang…”
A violent crashing sound interrupted their voices. Shadows flickered ahead, and a sudden flash of sword light erupted.
“Thud!”
“Thud thud!”
A series of sounds of sharp weapons cutting through flesh followed.
When everyone rushed over, they saw only the corpses of red-eyed giant rats scattered across the ground, numbering over a dozen.
Red-eyed giant rats were a type of group-dwelling fierce beast, their size comparable to a small wild boar, their strength far exceeding that of the rat swarm controlled by Rat Woman.
And now.
They were utterly helpless before Karl.
“Clack!”
Karl sheathed his sword and looked at the people behind him:
“Now it’s your turn.”
“Right.” The scarred woman nodded, urging:
“Sandy, it’s your turn.”
She stepped forward, a warm smile on her face:
“Brother Karl, I’m Jacqueline of the Wind Whisperers.”
“Wind Whisperers?”
Karl’s eyes narrowed:
“There are still people alive from that organization?”
The Wind Whisperers’ base was near Pit Number Two. When the Yin Energy erupted, it was said that they were all caught in it.
Rumors outside said that none survived!
“There are.”
Jacqueline subconsciously clenched her hands, forcing a smile:
“We were indeed affected by the Yin Energy, but not to the point of complete annihilation. But if the City Guard takes advantage of the situation…”
“Then it’s not certain.”
