Chapter 70: Robbery
Kerry felt the gold coins in his pocket as he turned left and right through the alleyways, finally arriving at the back door of a residence.
“Creak…”
The door was unlocked.
Pushing the door open, a pungent smell of alcohol hit him in the face.
Kerry frowned and stepped inside. The wooden floor beneath his feet creaked loudly.
The few people inside seemed unfazed by his arrival. They merely glanced at him casually and continued to drink and chat, clinking their glasses.
“Kun!”
Kerry walked straight up to one of them and asked in a muffled voice:
“Where’s Maggie?”
“Don’t be impatient.” Kun, dressed like an idle street thug, raised his droopy eyes and waved a hand at him.
“Did you bring the money?”
“…” Kerry’s face tightened. Suppressing the anger in his heart, he took out the gold coins from his pocket and threw them onto the table with a bang.
“Clatter…”
The shiny gold coins rolled back and forth on the table.
“Lovely little beauty, you’re always so charming.” Kun picked up a gold coin, his eyes glazed over. He stuck out his tongue and licked it back and forth, ignoring the dirt on it.
“I love you more than anything!”
“However…”
“But…”
He flicked his finger, sending the gold coin flying high before catching it again in his palm. He toyed with the coin as he looked at Kerry sideways, a strange expression on his face.
“Apparently, someone doesn’t think so, willing to pay any price for his first love.”
“Where’s Maggie?” Kerry, impatient, clenched his fists and asked loudly.
“I’ve given you the agreed-upon money. Now it’s your turn to hand over Maggie as promised.”
“Such an admirable lover.” Kun shook his head.
“Pity!”
“You took too long to gather the money. Your beloved Maggie has been taken away by someone else.”
“What did you say?” Kerry’s expression changed drastically. He took a step forward, grabbed Kun’s collar, and roared,
“Say that again!”
His actions angered the others present.
“What are you doing?”
“Looking for trouble, are you?”
“Let go of Kun!”
“…”
The men in the room put down their drinks and shouted. Someone even grabbed an iron rod nearby and glared at Kerry,
ready to attack if he didn’t let go.
“Don’t get excited.”
Kun, however, remained as carefree as ever. He patted Kerry on the shoulder and said with a smile,
“She’s just been taken away, not irretrievable. It’s just that the price will definitely be higher now.”
“You want to raise the price again?” Kerry’s facial muscles twitched, the anger in his eyes almost murderous.
They had raised the price several times already,
and he had agreed every time.
But every time he paid up, they would raise the price again, like a bottomless pit!
“It’s only natural.” Kun spread his hands.
“I can’t get her back from someone else at the original price, can I? Why would they hand her over?”
“Tell me where Maggie is.” Kerry grabbed the gold coins from the table and said,
“I’ll go find her myself!”
“Tsk, tsk…” Kun shook his head and clicked his tongue.
“That’s our trade secret, can’t be leaked. Of course, if you pay enough, it’s not impossible.”
He tossed the gold coins in his hand.
“You!”
Kerry gritted his teeth, then nodded hatefully.
“Fine!”
“It seems you’ve got me figured out. In that case, I don’t have to follow your rules.”
“Hmm?” Kun raised an eyebrow.
“What are you going to do?”
He remained relaxed, not panicking at all.
He knew Kerry well, a timid and weak person with no background.
Once in his hands, there was no chance of turning the tables!
“I told you.” A strange voice rang out in the room, calm and unhurried.
“You should have come to me for this kind of thing. My price is higher, but unlike some, I keep my word.”
“Thud!”
The floor trembled slightly.
A tall, thin figure dropped from the rafters, his wide cloak billowing behind him.
When did he get in?
No one knew!
The man had a long sword hanging from his waist, much longer than ordinary weapons. He placed one hand on his chest and bowed to Kerry.
“Taro Sword ━ Da Wu, at your service.”
“I want to know where they took Maggie.” Kerry said, his face grim.
“Please, Mr. Da Wu.”
He threw the gold coins in his hand to the man.
“As long as there’s money, everything is negotiable, especially since I owe you a favor.” Da Wu caught the gold coins, his eyes narrowed to slits. He turned to Kun and the others.
“Gentlemen, do you want to talk now, or…”
“Swish!”
His wrist flickered, and a long, narrow, sharp sword appeared in his hand, its blade glinting coldly.
“…after I beat you down?”
Kun’s face darkened. He exchanged glances with the others in the room, then slowly picked up a handy weapon nearby.
“Attack!”
“Let’s do it together!”
“Clang…”
Sword light flashed in the room, leaving afterimages in its wake.
Moments later.
The mercenary named Da Wu stepped on Kun’s back with one foot, his long sword drawing a bloody line across Kun’s neck.
“Speak!”
“Where is the person my employer is looking for?”
Kerry blinked, staring at the scene in disbelief.
He couldn’t believe that the drunkard he had met at the tavern some time ago, who owed him money, was actually a knight.
A real knight!
The cold blade cut through skin, inching closer to his throat. Kun was pale with fear.
“Foster!”
“Bray Foster!”
“The person you’re looking for is in his hands!”
Bray Foster?
Kerry’s face darkened. Bray was the youngest son of the Foster family. Most of the businesses in the city were related to their family. It was said that they were secretly running brothels.
Brothels?
Thinking of this, Kerry’s heart couldn’t help but panic.
Now, when Karl went to the Patrol Headquarters, he only went to deal with routine matters, hand over work, and chat with his colleagues.
He had no specific tasks.
He would sit there for a while in the morning, flipping through books, and then leave in the afternoon on some pretext.
His colleagues all knew he was about to leave, so they turned a blind eye to his ‘absence’. After all, the Patrol Officer was an idle position.
Divine Domain Fragment.
Karl took out a Beast Pill and swallowed it. Feeling the surge of Life Force within him, he circulated the Giant Spirit Breathing Technique while practicing the Ring of Protection.
The benefits of the High-Quality Beast Pills for knight cultivation made his slowed-down progress surge forward again.
With a whole box of High-Quality Beast Pills, he didn’t have to worry about his cultivation progress for the time being.
‘I’m walking the path of a wizard, but my progress in magic is slow, while my knight path is becoming smoother.’
‘It’s absurd!’
‘But the end of a knight is only a Legendary Knight, while a Full-fledged Wizard is only the beginning for a wizard.’
‘Heh…’
Karl chuckled.
‘I’m just a knight now, yet I look down on even legends. I’m not afraid of being laughed at.’
Status panel!
Name: Karl
Constitution: 2.36
Mental Power: 2.01
Source Essence: 0
Occupation: Knight, Intermediate Wizard Apprentice
Slow progress!
Shaking his head, Karl dismissed the status panel with a wave of his hand and walked towards the desk.
Next was study time.
For wizards,
accumulation was key!
Crafting Magic Items was both difficult and easy.
Without suitable Magic Materials, using ordinary items to create something extraordinary was undoubtedly difficult.
Only those with a deep understanding of various disciplines and strong practical skills could do it.
Such individuals were rare.
Therefore,
Magic Items were very rare, mostly relics from long ago, and ordinary Wizard Apprentices had little access to them.
However,
if one had Magic Materials with certain special properties, crafting Magic Items became relatively easier.
Even the organs of some magical creatures were Magic Items themselves.
For example, the feathers of a phoenix could be used to cast Fire Magic; the skin of an invisible crocodile could be used to sew an Invisibility Cloak…
“Natural Magic Items are extremely rare, mostly found on Legendary Creatures. Those are powerful beings that even Full-fledged Wizards wouldn’t dare to touch, so I can forget about it for now.”
“But ordinary Magic Materials are common in Free Port, which should be enough for me to try crafting.”
Karl picked up the Illusory Fish Trident, deep in thought.
Although he wasn’t optimistic about the weapon’s power, he was interested in its ability to change size at will.
Coincidentally.
After the fight with Hal, the Captain of the City Guard in Black City, his broadsword was about to be reforged.
If he could imbue the Illusory Fish Trident’s size-changing ability into it…
To craft,
items like a hammer, tongs, forge, and anvil were essential.
“Money!”
Whether it was practicing forging weapons or learning about Magic Items, it all required money.
Packing up his things, Karl left the Divine Domain Fragment and headed for the market.
It was almost evening.
There were few pedestrians on the street.
Karl wore a black robe, his hood covering his face, and the sword from Hal hanging from his waist.
A real treasure sword.
After the fight, his broadsword was battered, but this sword, after a little polishing, was still as bright as new.
…………
Three pearls the size of quail eggs, a crystal pendant, and a string of plump, round pearl necklaces.
Gary held them in his hands, admiring them repeatedly.
“Good stuff!”
He muttered to himself,
“These are all rare treasures. I believe even the big shots in the Royal City would love them.”
“As expected of you, sir. Every time you come, you bring treasures.”
“Seventy gold coins.” Karl sat in the armchair, his body hidden in the shadows. He spoke slowly,
“Just seventy gold coins, and they’re yours.”
“Seventy?” Gary was taken aback, then shook his head.
“Not expensive, not expensive at all.”
He said with a troubled expression,
“Your request is not high, and I like them very much, but the shop doesn’t have that much gold at the moment.”
“Oh!”
Karl sat up straight.
“It seems I came at the wrong time.”
“Please wait a moment, sir.” Seeing him about to leave, Gary’s expression changed drastically, and he quickly reached out a hand to stop him.
“I’ll have someone fetch the money nearby. They’ll be back soon. Rest assured, we won’t delay your business.”
He turned and winked at the servant in the shop.
“Hurry up!”
“Tell the young master that a distinguished guest has arrived, consigning goods worth seventy gold coins.”
“Yes, sir.”
The servant nodded and hurried out the door.
“I’m sorry.”
Gary turned back, rubbing his hands.
“Please wait a moment, sir.”
Nervous!
Uneasy!
Was he worried the deal wouldn’t go through?
Under the hood, Karl raised his head slightly, his scrutinizing gaze falling on the man. He spoke slowly,
“I’m in a hurry.”
“Yes, sir.” Gary’s forehead was sweating.
“There are fifty gold coins in the shop. I’ll get them for you first. Please accept this money for now.”
Fifty gold coins, ten in a stack, lined up in a row. Their golden luster was mesmerizing.
Karl touched the gold coins, no longer in a hurry for the moment.
Time passed.
“They’re not back yet?”
Karl opened his eyes, displeasure evident on his face.
“They’re here, they’re here.” Gary stood up hastily and went to greet the servant at the door, taking the gold coins from him.
“Sir, here is your payment.”
“Hmm.”
Karl nodded. After confirming the amount, he opened his money bag, swept the gold coins inside, and walked out of the shop, carrying the heavy bag.
Only after his figure disappeared did Gary wipe the sweat from his forehead.
“We’ve done this before, why am I so nervous facing him?”
“Especially when his gaze falls on me, my body tenses up, like I’m being stared at by some wild beast.”
He shook his head and asked,
“Is everything arranged?”
“It’s arranged.” The servant’s eyes were cold.
“This guy is sneaky and doesn’t dare show his face, but every time he comes, he brings valuable goods. They must be ill-gotten.”
“This time he even asked for seventy gold coins at once. Young Master Bray won’t let him off easily.”
“Hmm.” Gary nodded.
“You watch the shop. I’ll take the things to the young master.”
“Yes, sir.”
The servant replied.
Leaving the market, Karl habitually circled the area.
Just as he was about to return to the Divine Domain Fragment, he suddenly stopped, a hint of doubt in his eyes.
Something’s wrong!
His powerful physique gave him exceptional perception.
In the Giant Spirit Breathing Technique, there was a special method to temporarily enhance the five senses.
Sensing something amiss, he immediately activated the method. His ears twitched slightly, and the faint footsteps behind him became clearer.
“Someone’s following me?”
“At least three people!”
Frowning, Karl quickened his pace and ran towards the edge of the city, while the footsteps behind him also accelerated.
As expected!
They were definitely after him.
Soon.
The footsteps behind him suddenly quickened. One person bypassed him and blocked his path in a narrow alley.
“Hehe…”
The man blocking his way was short and stout, holding a dagger in each hand. He sneered at Karl.
“Kid, hand over everything you have.”
“You know I have something?” Karl asked slowly.
“Did Gary tell you?”
“Who cares who told us?” The other two also caught up. One of them was dressed like a wandering swordsman.
He pointed his sword at Karl.
“Hand over your things obediently and come with us, or you’ll regret it.”
“Heh…” Karl chuckled and suddenly charged forward.
Gale Swordsmanship!
Combat Technique ━ Gale Slash!
Several afterimages appeared out of thin air, instantly enveloping the stout robber.
Facing such a fierce sword technique, the robber’s face changed drastically, and he couldn’t help but cry out,
“Help me!”
“Knight Squire?”
The wandering swordsman’s eyes narrowed. He suddenly lunged forward, thrusting his long sword towards Karl’s back.
Combat Technique ━ Thrust!
This was a combat technique focused on explosive power. The sword pierced through the air, even letting out a faint whistle.
Even if one was wearing armor, it would be pierced if the quality wasn’t high enough.
“Clang…”
A clashing sound rang out.
Karl killed the stout robber in front of him with a single sword strike, then turned around to block the thrust, his movements smooth and effortless.
It was as if he was waving a straw.
The powerful destructive force brought by the combat technique didn’t even elicit a reaction from him.
Not right!
The wandering swordsman’s eyes widened.
“Knight!”
“Run!”
He had actually tried to rob a knight?
He was courting death!
Before he could finish speaking or react, his long sword was easily knocked away by Karl. In the next instant, his head flew off his body.
The last remaining man hadn’t even had time to attack when he saw his two companions killed one after another. He let out a wail, turned, and ran.
“Spare…”
“Thud!”
Karl stepped forward and pierced the last man’s heart with a single sword thrust. He slowly drew his sword and looked towards the consignment shop from before.
After a moment of thought, his figure vanished.
Soon.
The servant Gary had called was kneeling on the ground, his legs trembling, his clothes soaked with cold sweat.
“Where’s Gary?”
Karl stood in front of him and asked slowly,
“Tell me.”
The servant trembled and hurriedly said,
“It’s not my fault. It was Uncle Gary who told me to do it. He…he went to find Young Master Bray.”
“Bray?” Karl’s eyes flickered.
“Bray Foster?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Thud!”
The sword cut through the air.
The lamplight flickered, and the shadow on the wall suddenly split in two. The two halves of the body slowly collapsed to the ground.
