Ch 90: Tracking
Ji Chuan was curious about the perceptive zombie. Through possession, Ji Chuan discovered that the zombie was very special.
Its skin, like his own, was smooth and complete. If it weren’t for the pair of black wings and a black tail, it would look very much like a human.
A large number of zombies gathered around it, and the radiance of all lifeforms nearby was dimmed by it.
Even some corpses were slowly rising from the ground, evidently killed not long ago.
Ji Chuan discovered another anomaly: compared to ordinary zombies who treat humans as food, the corpses here were all very intact.
The zombie had a faint smile on its face, seemingly simply enjoying the act of killing.
Its eyes were gentle, gazing in the direction Ji Chuan was sensing.
If not for the bloodstains on its face and body, it would look like a refined young man in the wind.
The smile on its lips became more pronounced, its black wings began to tremble, and it flew up.
Ji Chuan’s curiosity about this zombie grew stronger, and he continued to observe its movements…
Hou Zhiqiang ignored the fatigue from the massive consumption of his special ability; he ran towards the base continuously.
After being attracted by him, some zombies only chased for a short time before stopping and wandering in place.
It was because of his special ability, Feign Death, that the zombies lost interest in him.
His special ability had no offensive capabilities. He could only serve as a member of the Xinze City Resource Collection Team, risking his life, using his ability to avoid zombies, and transporting supplies surrounded by zombies.
This was his only value to the base.
As usual, he followed the team to collect supplies in the city. Normally, they would have returned by nightfall, but they discovered a warehouse in a small supermarket.
Supplies in the apocalypse were like gold, and they spontaneously carried them load after load.
The Xinze City Ability User Base had strict supply allocation, distributing them proportionally according to each person’s labor. If they finished moving the supplies from this warehouse, their team wouldn’t need to go out for nearly a month.
They were members with rather useless abilities, taking great risks and doing heavy work, just to have a place to sleep peacefully in the apocalypse.
“Let’s push through; it’s rare to find such a complete warehouse. If we don’t finish moving it today, someone else might find it tomorrow.”
“Yeah, it’s all thanks to our team having a ‘bloodhound’.”
“Screw you, hurry up and move! Soon it’ll be completely dark, and we won’t be able to see the zombies.”
“What’s to be afraid of? Combat Team Nine just reported clearing this area yesterday. I don’t see any danger around.”
“But still…”
“But still what? Lao Liu, why don’t you finish your sentence…”
“Bang clang—”
The supply crate fell to the ground. The man stared blankly as his teammate fell into a pool of blood; a winged youth was smiling at him.
If his hands weren’t still dripping blood, he would have seemed like a friendly passerby.
“What are you…”
But before he could finish his sentence, the smiling youth appeared beside him.
Under his incredulous gaze, sharp claws ripped out his heart. Night fell completely.
Hou Zhiqiang sensed danger immediately and used his special ability. Since there were no zombies in the warehouse, he was outside helping his teammates keep watch.
However, he didn’t know when the winged man appeared.
Sensing danger, he quickly used his ability.
Mimicking the movements of a zombie, he moved further away, ignoring his teammate’s screams; even if he went over, it would be a suicide mission.
Once he was sure he was far enough, Hou Zhiqiang ran quickly, desperately toward the base.
His special ability couldn’t support continuous use; he felt his body getting tired, and he could only activate his ability when he was about to be caught by the zombies.
Hou Zhiqiang felt like his heart was going to jump out. This was the closest he had ever been to death. He felt no guilt toward his teammates; they were merely temporary colleagues in the apocalypse.
Adrenaline pushed him back to the base. He gasped for air, unable to even speak.
The guard quickly helped him up.
“Guantang Street… there… there’s a monster! Our team… they were all killed!”
“Rest, slow down.”
The guard didn’t think it was a big deal; people died at the base every day; they were used to it.
The Resource Collection Team was just a bunch of garbage who could only do menial labor; their life or death didn’t matter to them.
Saying they encountered a monster was just encountering a mutated species.
These wastes couldn’t even defeat a mutated species. The monster in the Resource Collection Team’s eyes was just poultry in the eyes of combat-type ability users like himself.
“That monster had a pair of black wings and a black tail; it’s a devil!”
Recalling the way the demon killed people, Hou Zhiqiang still felt a chill of fear.
However, the base guards took Hou Zhiqiang’s reaction as a battlefield stress response; they glanced at each other and prepared to send him to the infirmary.
How could a zombie have wings and a tail? There had never been such a precedent for mutated species.
“Is this your main base?”
Just as several people were about to enter the base, a clear male voice sounded from the air.
He slowly descended from the air, still wearing that gentle smile.
“It’s him! It’s that monster!”
Hou Zhiqiang screamed in terror. Why was this monster here? He had been running all night.
Did he deliberately let him go? To figure out the location of the base?!
When this thought arose, Hou Zhiqiang felt a chill run through his body.
The chill was from overusing his special ability; his body’s energy was already exhausted.
Likewise, because his heart had been pierced, his blood was no longer circulating.
Hou Zhiqiang fell down in terror.
“This is punishment for running too slowly and making me wait too long.”
The youth lightly flicked the blood from his hands, as if it were just some dirty water.
The guards didn’t dare delay and rushed to attack the youth. However, before they could raise their hands, they fell to the ground.
The base alarm sounded.
Fu Chengyu, who was asleep, quickly got up. The Xinze City Ability User Base’s alarm had never sounded before; it seemed the base had encountered a big problem.
“Leader, someone attacked the base. Currently, three people are dead, and the combat unit is assembling rapidly!”
“How many people?”
Fu Chengyu was confused. Who was crazy enough to attack an Ability User Base in the apocalypse? Were they trying to seize it?
“One person. They have wings and a tail, and they look human… no, a zombie! The guards who died just now have zombified!”
Hearing the security department’s description of the monitoring footage, Fu Chengyu’s pupils quaked, and his mind quickly cleared from sleep.
It looks human, has wings and a tail. If it has wings, it should be able to fly. Didn’t Jiang Hua City have a flying zombie? Could it be Number One?
Is that possible? The two cities are so far apart.
Did Xinze City also have a monster similar to Number One?
Fu Chengyu didn’t dare to think too much. He quickly grabbed a jacket and rushed to the monitoring room.
